Green Business And The Culture Of Capitalism: Constructing Narratives Of Environmentalism, Julia S. Jester Jun 2021

Green Business And The Culture Of Capitalism: Constructing Narratives Of Environmentalism, Julia S. Jester

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There are widespread colloquial arguments claiming that any actions taken to combat climate change will be bad for business and the economy, scaring people into continuing their support for the status quo for fear of their financial security. Alternatively, those attempting to combat ecological destruction have subsequently made transitions to sustainable development of products and shifting consumer behavior within this system. There is one core argument that both sides have, albeit in different ways – capitalism and environmentalism are seemingly incompatible; one cannot be successful without the eradication of the other. While it may appear there are only strict binary …

Neoliberalism, Civic Identity, And Resistance: An Ethnographic Case Study Of A Community Development Organization, Erin Layne Elliott Jun 2021

Neoliberalism, Civic Identity, And Resistance: An Ethnographic Case Study Of A Community Development Organization, Erin Layne Elliott

Dissertations and Theses

Research on the marketization of the nonprofit sector and how it has come to operate in more business-like ways has been well documented in recent years. This research has largely focused on how marketization has pervaded the nonprofit sector, yet little research has been done on how business-like values and modes of acting are manifesting in nonprofits. Even less understood are the impacts marketization may have on foundational civic values in the nonprofit sector. As marketized discourses proliferate, concerns have been raised about threats to nonprofit autonomy and the sector's important civic role. This dissertation aims to fill this gap …

This article represents some inquiries about Mohamed Dahman’s book entitled: Nomadic and stability. The researcher believes what motivated the author to write about this issue is the lackof studies that address the issue of sociology in the Sahraoui context. Therefore, this book is mainly about two eras; the pre- Spanish colonial period, 2- the period of stability and the occurrence of the social, legal institutions. Aatouf tried to analyze the content of the chapters of the book. He titled the first chapter as: Nomadic, as a life style. Dahman, in this chapter, tried to analyze the different types of Bedouins …

ABSTRACT

This dissertation focuses on three prongs of knowledge in parent education programs for Black/African American parents. These three prongs of knowledge fortify and enhance Black/African American parents' effectiveness in their role. This dissertation focuses on Black/African Americans' parenting experience because of the unique challenges they and their children face in a country that does not always value them or respects their humanity. Living in a country where systemic racism is foundational, Black/African American parents and their children have added challenges presented by this reality. It is systemic racism that creates the need for additional knowledge to ensure that Black/African …

Neo Collectivism: Public Space Design For The Intergenerational Community, Shu Zhang

Architecture Senior Theses

Within our lifetime, we will see an increase in the aging of the population in China, and the social isolation of the elderly is occurring every day. Simultaneously, more and more young people migrate to large cities, while older family members stay in their home towns to ease the younger generation's burden. The once collectivist family culture has been destroyed, and the daily life of the elderly without their relatives has become monotonous and lonely. Moreover, with the advancement of technology, the younger generation is increasingly dependent on smartphones for social interaction and life, which increases the possibility of the …

Jr. And Sr. High At-Risk Students Within Poverty: Formation Of The Mentor-Mentee Program In Addressing Their Needs, John J. Noggle

Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses

In the Spring of 2015, I was driving toward Southwest Arkansas to my new appointment at Stamps First United Methodist Church. As I was driving further south on Highway 71, I began to notice how poverty-stricken South Arkansas was. Towns that were once the commercial service centers to their communities contained empty store buildings and little economic life. It was then that I knew that the majority of children in South Arkansas were At-Risk children in poverty. I felt a call in my Spirit to help those in need by developing a plan of action to help them in meeting …

The Relationship Between Quality Of Life, Extreme Climatological Conditions And Social Unrest In India, Daniel Schaefer May 2021

The Relationship Between Quality Of Life, Extreme Climatological Conditions And Social Unrest In India, Daniel Schaefer

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Scholars have grown increasingly interested in the association between climate conditions and social unrest. Though no consensus exists regarding the specific mechanisms that connect both phenomena, scholars have found a links between rising temperatures, precipitation, or the magnitude of disasters and social unrest. However, is unclear to what extent deviations from historical trends rather than absolute levels might serve as important indicators of unrest. Moreover, it remains unclear how effectively socio-demographic factors like quality of life and ethno-religious fragmentation can explain trends on unrest, net of climatological indicators. This project tests the extent to which deviation from historical trends in …

Warm Or Chilly? An Assessment Of The Relationships Between Campus Climate And Gender Identity Among Transgender And Nonbinary College Students, Emma Allen-Morgan

Master's Theses

This research is a mixed-methods analysis of the relationship between campus climate and gender identity for transgender and nonbinary college students. Snowball and convenience sampling were used to obtain a sample of trans and nonbinary college students. Thirty surveys and six interviews were completed. I applied Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory and Risman’s gender structure theory to analyze how macrosystems, microsystems, and the chronosystem (time) affected trans students’ gender identity, whether positively or negatively. Participants were ambivalent about the effects of college on their gender identity; on one hand, college gives trans students freedom from their previous environments. However, participants described a …

A Theology Built On Meritocracy: A Theological And Sociological Examination Of The Prosperity Gospel And The American Dream, T.E. Starman May 2021

A Theology Built On Meritocracy: A Theological And Sociological Examination Of The Prosperity Gospel And The American Dream, T.E. Starman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In American megachurch Christianity there lies a paradox in the concept of wealth and blessings; many megachurch leaders take deliberate steps to distance themselves from the defamed and heretical label of prosperity gospel, while simultaneously using many of its theological tenets as foundational to their own theology of wealth, money, and success. This thesis examines the nature of this paradox from both a theological and sociological lens. Through content analysis and case study examples, this thesis assesses the theological tenets of American megachurch prosperity theology as well as the sociological reality of stratification and the ideology that buttresses it. This …

Project Overview: I researched Trump-era policies and how the president’s anti-immigrant agenda has impacted the immigrant experience in Providence and the surrounding areas (Central Falls & Pawtucket), as well as how it has affected immigrant-serving organizations’ ability to fulfill their missions to these communities. I also focused on the pandemic, as these communities, which have the densest immigrant population in Rhode Island, were hit the hardest. Specifically, from the point of view of the organizations as they were …

A Place To Call Home, At What Cost? An Empirical Model Of Cost-Burdened Housing In The U.S. At The Metropolitan Unit Of Analysis, Alec Turner Apr 2021

A Place To Call Home, At What Cost? An Empirical Model Of Cost-Burdened Housing In The U.S. At The Metropolitan Unit Of Analysis, Alec Turner

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

The affordable housing crisis has plagued the United States for decades. This thesis analyzes the predictors of cost-burdened housing at the metropolitan level of analysis, as well as how a lack of affordable housing and cost-burdened housing impacts the socioeconomic status and well-being of households in those areas. The study uses a variety of statistical analyses, including regression analysis. This topic is important because cost-burdened households tend to spend significantly less on food, healthcare, transportation, and retirement savings because their income is ultimately consumed by the cost of housing. Inadequate housing has also been found to be the strongest predictor …

Examining The Effects Of The “Strong Black Woman” Stereotype On Black Women’S Experience With Domestic Violence, Taylor Tristine Apr 2021

Examining The Effects Of The “Strong Black Woman” Stereotype On Black Women’S Experience With Domestic Violence, Taylor Tristine

Sociology & Anthropology Student Scholarship

Major: Psychology
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Maureen Outlaw, Sociology and Anthropology

Through a thorough analysis of published articles and books, this analysis of the effects of the “Strong Black Woman” on Black women’s experience with domestic violence shows major disparities with the experience of White women. While many Black women take pride in being “strong,” this label can have surprisingly complex and simultaneously positive and negative effects on a Black woman’s psyche. Additionally, many effects of the application of this stereotype may seem positive to Black women at the time, but after constant application of the stereotype these women are consistently …

High Rise: Poverty, Policing, And Crisis In American Public Housing, Philip V. Mcharris

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

High Rise: Poverty, Policing, and Crisis in American Public Housing focuses on the Carter Houses, a high-rise public housing development in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Employing ethnographic methods, High Rise explores the everyday experiences of residents as they navigate concerns surrounding safety, deteriorating building conditions, policing and incarceration, and cycles of poverty. High Rise argues that the social and built dimensions of particular housing contexts are central to understanding experiences of poverty and disadvantage and shape the social life of residents and their communities. The project begins with an overview and a descriptive picture of the Carter …

Policing And The Illusion Of Public Input, Tony Cheng Apr 2021

Policing And The Illusion Of Public Input, Tony Cheng

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Decades of scholarly, policy, and financial investment in police-community reform have coalesced around fulfilling the elusive promise of increasing public input in policing. And yet, policing in America today is currently undergoing a crisis in public legitimacy. By continuing to understand the gaps between the promise and practice of community initiatives as revealing police’s operational shortcomings rather than organizational priorities, we fail to sufficiently theorize and account for the core problem of police-community relations. This book argues that the core problem is an enduring illusion of public input in policing. The illusion exists because police shape the very channels through …

Over the last few years, the cancel culture mindset has become increasingly hypocritical and toxic. This presentation aims to analyze different instances of cancel culture in action in order to: determine any trends of controversial behavior, examine the discourse environment that's most often stimulated and its influence on the general public, evaluate any unfair biases present among cancel culture advocates, and better understand the negative impact that …

Makeshift Memory: Nostalgia As Collective Solidarity In The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood And Post-Imperial England, Catherine White Apr 2021

Makeshift Memory: Nostalgia As Collective Solidarity In The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood And Post-Imperial England, Catherine White

Senior Theses

It is a deeply human experience to long for times, people, and places of the past, even pasts we ourselves did not experience. This feeling, which we most often call nostalgia (but has earned many names throughout history) has profound influence especially in how we perceive our collective histories and use these histories to guide us forward. This experience of nostalgia is the underpinning for many of our sources of solidarity (or who we feel loyal or obligated to). However, when we feel these profound connections to the distant past, we often lose the reality of that past in the …

Heavy Metal, Moral Panic, And Residing Stigma, Frank Knott Iv

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Since its origins of the 1970s up to the present, the musical themes of Heavy Metal along with the associated subcultures have been the prey of various moral ideologies, particularly of a conservative matter. Moral panics have ensued in the past over various qualities of the genre, and there is still residual stigma to be found today, much of which is based upon misperceptions of cause and effect.

Mediating Asian-Ness: How And Why Does Asian Identity Salience Vary By Biracial Status?, Kaitlan Wong Mar 2021

Mediating Asian-Ness: How And Why Does Asian Identity Salience Vary By Biracial Status?, Kaitlan Wong

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The following study explores how and why Asian identity salience may vary between biracial and monoracial Asians. This study further aims to find potential mediators—including daily Asian contact, linked fate, group solidarity, and microaggressions—that might explain any group differences in Asian identity salience. I used the 2016 Post-Election National Asian American Survey to explore these research aims. Contrary to expectations, I found that biracial Asians have higher Asian identity salience than monoracial Asians. As expected, linked fate and microaggressions were positively associated with Asian identity salience. Surprisingly, daily Asian contact was negatively associated and group solidarity was not significantly associated …

Knowledge management plays an important role in manufacturing industry, as machinery & other physical equipments are not the main criteria of innovation but the knowledge of employees. In manufacturing industry, there is lack of explicit knowledge, which makes it difficult to utilize the power of data. In this paper, a new feedback approach is used with knowledge dust and pearls approach [1] to solve problems related to time and employee motivation with respect to knowledge management. A questionnaire was designed, and interviews of truck drivers were taken to get a general perspective on sociological factors.

Male-To-Female Sexual Violence In Rural Communities: A Sociological Review, Walter Dekeseredy Dr.

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The extant sociological literature on male-to-female violence in rural communities reveals that the bulk of the empirical work on this problem focuses mainly on non-lethal physical assaults, such as beatings. Much more research on sexual violence is sorely needed. The main objective of this review is twofold: (1) to describe the current state of international sociological knowledge about male sexual violence against adult women and (2) to suggest new directions in research and theory.

An Integrative Study Of Service And Safety Climate And Performance: Do Climates Compete?, Jeffrey B. Paul

Selected Faculty Publications

Organizational scholars continue to expand our knowledge of the contextual forces influencing employee behavior in organizations. A notable stream in this research agenda includes organizational climate studies that describe the social processes guiding employee perceptions of their environment. These shared perceptions formulate climate constructs that have demonstrated through theorizing and empirical findings relationships with attitudinal, behavioral, and performance outcomes across multiple levels of analysis. Contemporary climate studies have focused on facet-specific climates, such as a service climate or safety climate, and have linked facet climates with the same facet related performance (e. g. safety climate predicts increased safety performance). Given …

The tourism industry in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic is dominated by foreign enterprise. Given the history of colonization in the Dominican Republic, the social dynamics in the tourism industry are imperialist by nature. This thesis seeks to understand how tourist maps are used to assimilate tourists into the social dynamics of Puerto Plata. To do this, it unravels existing literature on tourism in the Caribbean, the nature of the tourism industry in the Dominican Republic as well as its foreign benefactors, and foundational works on the sociological aspects of tourism.

The findings of this paper are that tourist maps seek …
