Physical Therapy Publications

Purpose: The capacity to recover motor function with pathology or age-related decline is termed physical resilience. It is unknown what outcome domains are captured with existing measurement instruments. Thus, this scoping review aimed to identify measurement instruments for physical resilience, identify research gaps, and make recommendations for future research. Methods: Articles were included from the search when their subject matter included the term resilience in relation to the physical health of older adults. Data on physical resilience measurement instruments were extracted using the outcome domains: body function or structure, activity and participation, and societal impact. Results: The majority of the …

County-Level Societal Predictors Of Covid-19 Cases And Deaths Changed Through Time In The United States: A Longitudinal Ecological Study, Philip J. Bergmann, Nathan A. Ahlgren, Rosalie A. Torres Stone

Biology

People of different racial/ethnic backgrounds, demographics, health, and socioeconomic characteristics have experienced disproportionate rates of infection and death due to COVID-19. This study tests if and how county-level rates of infection and death have changed in relation to societal county characteristics through time as the pandemic progressed. This longitudinal study sampled monthly county-level COVID-19 case and death data per 100,000 residents from April 2020 to March 2022, and studied the relationships of these variables with racial/ethnic, demographic, health, and socioeconomic characteristics for 3125 or 97.0% of U.S. counties, accounting for 96.4% of the U.S. population. The association of all county-level …

Network Dynamics In The U.S. Real Estate Industry, Jing Ping Oct 2022

Network Dynamics In The U.S. Real Estate Industry, Jing Ping

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Market actors are connected through different relationships. Through these relationships, they obtain resources, build mutual trust, and develop their advantages. Thus, the relationships shape their decision making, performance, and survival. The social embeddedness feature of market behaviors has been investigated by sociologists under various contexts over past decades. Network analysis is a powerful tool that economic sociologists utilize to examine important market activities. Three mechanisms explain the dynamics of network relationships (Rivera, Soderstrom, and Uzzi 2010). First, assortative mechanism suggests that connections are more likely to form between the social entities who share similar attributes. Second, relational mechanism emphasizes that …

Strategic Organizing, Dangerous Rhetoric, And Philanthropic Decision-Making In The U.S. New Right, Alexandra Jane Dibranco Oct 2022

Strategic Organizing, Dangerous Rhetoric, And Philanthropic Decision-Making In The U.S. New Right, Alexandra Jane Dibranco

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

While rightist politics have drawn increased scholarly attention in recent years, the study of movements on the right lacks the depth and nuance afforded to movements on the left. This dissertation investigates organizing, communication, and funding strategy by the New Right in the United States. The papers in this dissertation address misconceptions about rightist movements that limit scholarship, including calling attention to their heterogeneity, historical embeddedness, and leadership dynamics. The first paper in the dissertation addresses the perception of the Christian Right as monolithic, demonstrating the strategic organizing and ideological/theological work involved since the 1960s in bringing disparate and hostile …

Market Feminism In Morocco, Claire Madsen Oct 2022

Market Feminism In Morocco, Claire Madsen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Despite widespread views of “Moroccan Exceptionalism,” Morocco continues to rank poorly on international evaluations of gender equality. This project seeks to understand the extent of the influence neoliberal economic forces in Morocco have had on the feminist landscape. Analysis of Moroccan political history, Foucauldian theories of power relations, and relevant literature on state feminism set the groundwork for the evaluation of the extent state feminism in Morocco can be understood as market-based, in accordance with the definition from From State Feminism to Market Feminsim (2012) by Kantola and Squires. Through interviews of three experts, three meetings with women’s empowerment NGOs, …

Lgbtq+ In The Cowl: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - Tracing Coverage Of Lgbtq+ Topics From 1935 To 2022, Nicole Patano

Sociology & Anthropology Student Scholarship

In their very first issue published on November 16, 1935, The Cowl staff explained the purpose of the novel student newspaper: “Primarily, the COWL exists to serve the student body, not simply as a news organ, but more fundamentally as a means to foster and intensify an enthusiatic Providence College spirit and loyalty.” Since its founding, The Cowl has attempted to be just that, reporting news and welcoming discussion and debate from members of its staff and members of the larger Providence College community.

Unfortunately, however, the mission of the College can, and often has, run contrary to the mission …

Stochastic Models Of Jaya And Semi-Steady-State Jaya Algorithms, Uday K. Chakraborty Aug 2022

Stochastic Models Of Jaya And Semi-Steady-State Jaya Algorithms, Uday K. Chakraborty

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

The Jaya algorithm and its variants have enjoyed great success in diverse application areas, but no theoretical analysis of the algorithm, to our knowledge, is available in the literature. In this paper we build stochastic models for analyzing Jaya and semi-steady-state Jaya algorithms. For these algorithms, the computational cost depends on how, at each iteration, the new individual fares against the existing individual. Costs must be incurred for any replacement of individuals and the subsequent update of the population-worst individual’s (and/or the population-best individual’s) index. We use the following two quantities as the main metrics for analysis: the expected number …

Through A Glass Too Brightly: A Long History Of Media, Social Expectations And Loneliness, Edward Brennan Jun 2022

Through A Glass Too Brightly: A Long History Of Media, Social Expectations And Loneliness, Edward Brennan

Conference Papers

This paper looks at how media, social expectations, and chronic loneliness are intertwined. It uses a historical and cultural approach. Loneliness—a painful gap between the social connections that people have and those they expect to have—has always existed. However, modern life and new media technologies have changed how loneliness feels. Using examples from the telephone, radio, television, and social media, the paper shows that society regularly has greeted new technologies through a polarised hopes and fears discourse. A more long-term history, however, reveals that while media may have positive and negative effects on social connection, the relationship between media and …

Essays On The Economics Of Conflict., Ranajoy Guha Neogi Dr. May 2022

Essays On The Economics Of Conflict., Ranajoy Guha Neogi Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The thesis encompasses three chapters which provide policy-relevant insights into the domain of conflict economics. The research endeavour goes deep into exploring the underlying linkages of varied economic and non-economic factors (e.g., culture, religion and myriads of ethnic factors) leading to the multiple facets of economic outcomes. The analyses in the thesis, which fall in the realm of applied microeconomic theory, are facilitated by different tools of game theory and public economics. Although the focuses of these chapters lie in the domain of economics of conflict (and its policy implications under different situations), each chapter addresses the conflicts engendered in …

Calling Out Street Harassment Of Women And Lgbtq People: A Review Of Kolysh’S Everyday Violence, Alexandra Nowakowski May 2022

Calling Out Street Harassment Of Women And Lgbtq People: A Review Of Kolysh’S Everyday Violence, Alexandra Nowakowski

The Qualitative Report

Street harassment often impacts people whose identities and presentations of self-intersect with femininity in any way. Yet, despite this frequent unwelcome scrutiny of our bodies and selves, few scholars have turned their own appraising gazes on street harassment in kind. Fewer still have centered queer and trans people in their inquiry. In Everyday Violence: The Public Harassment of Women & LGBTQ People, Dr. Simone Kolysh (2021) critically investigates street harassment from intersectional queer and nonbinary feminist perspectives. Their research both amplifies voices from survivors of harassment and directly explores perspectives from perpetrators of harassment. Per Kolysh’s own reflections, this …

The Communicative Capacities Of The Medical Discourse In Authoritarian Societies : The Case Of Aids In Iran, Elham Pourtaher May 2022

The Communicative Capacities Of The Medical Discourse In Authoritarian Societies : The Case Of Aids In Iran, Elham Pourtaher

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study explores the role of medical discourse in the Iranian formal public sphere. It examines how an epidemiological wave of HIV/AIDS—known as "the third wave"—highlighted nontraditional sexual behaviors in public and enabled a shift in policy and discourse by the Islamic Republic State. Through analyzing published content on HIV/AIDS from five major Iranian newspapers between 2009 and 2013, this study identified four competing narratives of the third wave which coexist and have a dynamic relationship with one another. First, the medical narrative warns of an unfolding public health crisis and provides a technical perspective to make sense of the …

Economic Disadvantage, Nativity, And Academic Performance And School Punishment Among Latino/A Children, Yolanda Chavez May 2022

Economic Disadvantage, Nativity, And Academic Performance And School Punishment Among Latino/A Children, Yolanda Chavez

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cultural explanations of how familial resource inequality negatively impacts the academic well-being of a Latino/a child saturate the literature. This study examines the relationship between economic disadvantage and academic performance and school punishment through Family Stress Process Theory, providing a contextual analysis of resource instability. The additional myriad of legal and social constraints that parental nativity provides for family members can moderate this relationship. Data was drawn from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal measure of U.S. couples and their children in 20 large U.S. cities. Regression models indicate the relationship between economic disadvantage and academic performance …

Revolutionary Road And Gone Girl: Undermining The Veneer Of Domestic Bliss, John T. Hoty Apr 2022

Revolutionary Road And Gone Girl: Undermining The Veneer Of Domestic Bliss, John T. Hoty

ETD Archive

Modern literature is rife with examples of authors dramatizing the various stressors suffered by families populating the American suburbs. Within this theme, two such authors, Richard Yates and Gillian Flynn, use their craft to explore not only the social orthodoxy expected by suburban residents, but also the performative aspects applied when that conformity is challenged by these inherent pressures. The presence of these social strains as it’s examined by each author, both of whom are writing 60 years apart, furthers the commentary on the toxicities of suburban living in post-WWII America (Yates) and the modern technological age (Flynn) by surveying …

This study examines the relationship between autism and mental health as well as affection rates amongst children. I analyze data from the 2019 National Survey of Children’s Health, a nationally representative sample of children aged 0 to 17, which was collected by the US Census Bureau. Multivariate binary logistic models reveal that children with autism are significantly less likely to be affectionate toward others. I also find that children diagnosed with autism are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety and depression, even …

My research examines factors that influence adherence to public health guidelines during the ongoing pandemic. I apply quantitative methodology to investigate how positions of social privilege, select news sources, and beliefs in political conspiracy theories impact adherence to public health instructions and vaccine trust. I used the Sixth Wave of the Baylor Religion Survey, a national random sample, and analyzed data using multivariate regressions. The findings of the research reveal that higher positions of social privilege and subscription to conspiracy …

An Analysis Of Appearance-Based Assumptions In Content Creation, Emily Andersen Apr 2022

An Analysis Of Appearance-Based Assumptions In Content Creation, Emily Andersen

Honors Projects

The purpose of this project is to uncover assumptions and stereotypes held against college majors through content creation. Is it natural to stereotype and label people? Is it harmful? Most may think that is true, while others may believe that is being judgemental. Can others tell what major a student is by a first glance or a brief conversation? Is it the way they dress, their star sign, or political beliefs? These are all examples of stereotypes I believe could influence an assumption. What kind of thoughts goes into these stereotypes from a sociological perspective? Answers are discovered through a …

Essay In Social Coordination, Jacob Derechin Apr 2022

Essay In Social Coordination, Jacob Derechin

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Social Coordination is an essential feature of any social system. Coordination is a precondition for certain kinds of cooperation, as cooperation implies agents working together for a common cause, while coordination only implies agents synchronizing their behavior. For example, social contagion suggests a mechanism for groups to socially coordinate without necessarily cooperating. When behaviors spread across social ties the people may not be actively intending to spread the behavior, so they are not always cooperating. The necessity of coordination does not imply that it is easy to achieve. In Chapter 1, I survey two theoretical frameworks for operationalizing the challenges …

Collared Men: Ethnographic Essays On Navigating Race And Status In Everyday Live, Craig Holloway Apr 2022

Collared Men: Ethnographic Essays On Navigating Race And Status In Everyday Live, Craig Holloway

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The demands of the American society are changing as it develops into a more plural anddiverse society that is characterized by an increasingly specialized economy. Many are willing to say that we are in both a post-industrial and post-racial society that renders equal opportunity for all people. Yet, black men continue to be in relatively peculiar circumstances as people from varied statuses. Status is fluid. And their narrations of their everyday lives and the lives of their counterparts through their own status can at times be strikingly different from mainstream society. These men navigate the demands of race, family and …

Destruction, Reconstruction, & Migration In The Wake Of Wildfires, Kathryn Mcconnell Apr 2022

Destruction, Reconstruction, & Migration In The Wake Of Wildfires, Kathryn Mcconnell

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The scale of wildfire destruction has grown rapidly in recent years, destroying nearly 25,000 buildings in the U.S. during 2018 alone. Recently, scientists have developed nationwide wildfire event data, making it possible to model wildfire effects on human migration. In Chapter 1, quarterly data on residential mobility from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York/Equifax Consumer Credit Panel are paired with building destruction counts from the U.S. National Incident Management System/Incident Command System database of wildfire events to evaluate the effects of wildfire destruction on migration probabilities in the U.S. between 1999 and 2018. Findings indicate that only the most …

The Theological Structure For Forming Christian Vocational Spirituality: A Practical Method For The Whole Of The Christian Life, Yong Sub Sim

Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses

The Christian church works for reconciliation between God and his creatures through Jesus Christ. For this, the church calls people and helps them hear, understand, recognize and receive the Spirit of God through Jesus. This dissertation explains this process as walking with, working with and following Jesus.

This dissertation builds a theological structure for forming “Christian vocational spirituality” as the whole of the Christian life reconciled with the Spirit of God through Jesus Christ. This theological structure guides the process through which a human being becomes a true Christian being, and a Christian being becomes a true human being reconciled …

Analyzing Alternative Spaces: Queer Social Networks And Notions Of Belonging In Morocco, Adam Griffin Apr 2022

Analyzing Alternative Spaces: Queer Social Networks And Notions Of Belonging In Morocco, Adam Griffin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Because of the presence of both legal and cultural discrimination in Morocco, the Moroccan queer community operates largely in secret and is unable to occupy public space. Additionally, the patriarchal structure of Moroccan society creates a culture of toxic masculinity that limits queer expression. This paper examines how queer Moroccans operate in the face of this discrimination. It also explores the extent to which alternative spaces, or spaces that subvert the norms and practices of mainstream society, contribute to the creation of LGBTQ+ social networks. Alternative spaces can be physical spaces—such as bars, cafes, and live music venues—or virtual spaces—such …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Art in the public sphere is an integral tool of communication that transcends the vertical hierarchies of social organization by infiltrating the popular consciousness with disruptive mediums and reclamations of visual space. Because of the specific accessibility of a variety of forms of public art, for both creators and observers, manifestations of public art have become a popular method through which counter-hegemonic social narratives can be constructed and mediated; in Argentina, a profound history of disruptive art has has been intricately intertwined with an equally rich history of popular activism. With a focus in El Bolsón and Ushuaia, two localities …
