Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

Sociology is one of the sciences of human behavior that has grown out of Enlightenment thought. In its present method and theory there is substantially nothing that was not anticipated by gifted seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth century thinkers and their intellectual offspring in the Enlightenment tradition. From particular aspects of the grand theoretical syntheses that were characteristic of these centuries, a process of refinement and specialization has produced the sociology of the present day. Ethnic Assimilation: A Study Of Japanese Families In The United States And Hawaii, Kazuichi Hamasaki Jan 1953

Ethnic Assimilation: A Study Of Japanese Families In The United States And Hawaii, Kazuichi Hamasaki

Student Work

There are many definitions and possible interpretations of ethnic assimilation. It can mean anything from "elevation of economic status and adaptation to new standards of civilization, to changing of the color of skin. However, in the final analysis, ethnic assimilation divides into two phases, physical and cultural. When we speak of physical assimilation, we immediately think of two or more racees blending into a dominant race and losing all former identities. This theory of assimilation may occur in a democratic country but is most improbable.

An Analysis Of Attitudes Of Members Of The Church Of The Brethren In The Pacific Coast Region, Merlin Leroy Clark

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The hypothesis of this study is that there is a relationship between race attitudes and "denominocentrism, " and with certain social categories, e.g., age, social class, income, education, etc., in the Church of the Brethren in the Pacific Coast Region. If a relationship can be identified and analyzed, the results will be of value as tools in helping to understand, predict, and change human behavior. It might be further suggested that if there is a strong relationship between attitudes and certain social categories in the church, attitudes of the Brethren on these issues, and perhaps on many more, are, to …

The Sociological And Social-Psychological Functions Of The Urban Protestant Church, Lois Chambers Jan 1950

The Sociological And Social-Psychological Functions Of The Urban Protestant Church, Lois Chambers

Honors Papers

The major purpose of the paper is, of course, to record the results of a very limited study ofsome of the functions of urban Protestant churches. However, in order that this particular study may be seen in proper context, it seems necessary to begin the report with a brief consideration of the general area of the sociology of religion, including major questions with which previous research and theories have been concerned, and significant trends in contemporary research in this area.

A further requirement for adequate reporting of a study such as this one seems to be a complete description of …
