Death, Loss, And Grief Work, Maribal Rodriquez-Lopez Jan 1992

Death, Loss, And Grief Work, Maribal Rodriquez-Lopez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This work is divided into five sections, the first being the Introduction. In Section II, shame, perpetrators, bystanders, victims and survivors are defined at length. Chapter 1, entitled, Shame Defined, differentiates between embarrassment, guilt and shame. In Healing the Shame that Binds You, John Bradshaw (1988) describes shame: It is like internal bleeding. Exposure to oneself lies at the heart of toxic shame. A shame-based person will guard against exposing his inner self to others, but more significantly, he will guard against exposing himself to himself. Toxic shame is so excruciating because it is the painful exposure of the believed …

Toward Assessment Of Programs In Humboldt County Providing Adjustment Assistance To Adult Lao-Hmong Refugees, Susan D. Smith

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis is a beginning of appraisal of programs in Humboldt County designed to facilitate the adjustment of adult Southeast Asian Lao-Hmong refugees to the host culture and Humboldt County community, examined from the perspective of social psychology and application of Naomi Golan's (1981) strategies for transitions of persons who have experienced radical changes in their life structure. The assessment focuses on the purpose and methods of assistance, and the difficulties and successes encountered in aiding the Hmong in their adjustment to American culture, from the viewpoint of the assistance programs. Because this is an initial endeavor, it is hoped …

Disimprisoning The Soul From Vergüenza (Shame): A Socio-Political Systems Perspective, Maribal Rodríquez-López

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The role of shame in the lives of people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is examined. Although some will argue that shame can be healthy, it can also be destructive, resulting in immense suffering and dysfunction. Shame is defined as existing not only within an individual, but in families, communities, societies, and nations. This work is heavily documented with supporting materials from sociologists, social workers, psychologists, and historians; as well as the author's personal experience as a woman of Puerto Rican/Taino Indian descent. Further findings are provided from the author's professional work as a registered occupational therapist, crisis counselor, …

Sponsoring The Next Generation: Parental Willingness To Pay For Higher Education, Lala C. Steelman, Brian Powell May 1991

Sponsoring The Next Generation: Parental Willingness To Pay For Higher Education, Lala C. Steelman, Brian Powell

Faculty Publications

Although sociologists and economists have been widely concerned with parental investment in children, that investment has rarely been examined directly. The Parent Survey of the High School and Beyond data set provides material for examining the traits of parents and children that shape parental payment for higher education. Parents' reported willingness and ability to pay, along with savings for children's future education, are shaped first by total income and the number of children who must share that income. Moreover, parental investment in higher education is increased when the parents themselves received parental financial support, which suggests continuity over generations. Gender …

Reverse Peace Corps: A Proposal On The Recruitment Of Third World Nationals As Peace Corps Volunteers Assigned To The United States, Payam Foroughi

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

"War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength." (Orwell 1949, p. 5). Indeed, in 1960, when President Kennedy announced his future plans for a Peace Corps of young Americans, there were already an estimated 10,000 Americans working in the Third World country of Vietnam in the capacity of "military advisors". By 1963 there were 17,000 such Americans in Vietnam and another 7,000 Americans in 44 other Third World countries working as Peace Corps Volunteers (Rice 1985).

In 1835, reflecting on the then young America, Tocqueville stated that "of all nations, those most fond of peace are democratic nations" and …

Parental Abductions In The Context Of Legal, Familial, Social And Cultural Variables, Dianne Cyr Carmody Jan 1991

Parental Abductions In The Context Of Legal, Familial, Social And Cultural Variables, Dianne Cyr Carmody

Doctoral Dissertations

It is only in the last two decades that parental abduction has become recognized as a social problem of significant magnitude. In the current study, data from the National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway and Thrownaway Children (Finkelhor, et al. 1990) are used to explore the characteristics of victims, perpetrators and episodes of parental abduction. Next, a state-level analysis examines the relationship between various social, legal, familial and cultural variables and rates of parental abduction. Data from the National Center on Missing and Exploited Children provided the dependent variable for the state-level analyses. State rates of parental abduction appear …

Postmodernism As The Sociocultural Deconstruction Of Modernity, Steven Craig Ward Jan 1991

Postmodernism As The Sociocultural Deconstruction Of Modernity, Steven Craig Ward

Doctoral Dissertations

This work seeks to provide a description of the theoretical positions and cultural expressions of postmodernism and to provide a sociological critique of its conclusions. The work uses the writings of the Derrida, Foucault, Lyotard, Lacan, and Baudrillard, as well as arguments in neo-pop art and postmodern architecture, as representatives of the postmodern position on the issues of referentiality, subjectivity, and rationality. Postmodernism is treated as a skeptical theoretical and cultural system which levels all ideational distinctions between belief and knowledge and truth and rhetoric. This work argues that a social or constructivist epistemology can provide a different way of …

Imf-Supported Programs In Developing Countries And Their Impact On Vulnerable Groups: The Case Of Turkey After 1980, Ozlem Ertan-Lamontagne Jan 1991

Imf-Supported Programs In Developing Countries And Their Impact On Vulnerable Groups: The Case Of Turkey After 1980, Ozlem Ertan-Lamontagne

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this dissertation is to examine the impact of macroeconomic policies (specifically those supported by the International Monetary Fund) on the poor, especially women and children, both conceptually and in the case of Turkey after 1980. The premise is that macroeconomic policies affect the standard of living through their impact on the growth rate, the rate of inflation, and the level and composition of government expenditures.

This dissertation includes a review of IMF-supported programs and the debates that have surrounded them. It then discusses Turkey's economic history prior to 1980 and the country's economic performance after the …

Justifiable Homicide, Alexander Alvarez Jan 1991

Justifiable Homicide, Alexander Alvarez

Doctoral Dissertations

Research on lethal violence has consistently overlooked the area of justifiable homicide in the U.S. This analysis has addressed this oversight through a three part examination of justifiable homicides. A historical review is presented which analyzes the concept of justifiable homicide in western society and finds that certain themes are prominent, such as defense of life and of property. The next section of the work entails a descriptive analysis of justifiable homicide in the U.S. from 1976 through 1987 utilizing Supplementary Homicide Reports data gathered under the Uniform Crime Reporting program. This examination reveals that justifiable homicide differs in some …

A Comparison Of Models Of Parole Outcome., Larry Allen Gould Jan 1991

A Comparison Of Models Of Parole Outcome., Larry Allen Gould

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this dissertation is on the criteria which parole boards use as the basis for their decision to release an offender on to parole. The literature strongly suggests that there are some objective measures of dangerousness on parole, such as the Salient Factor Score; however, the literature also indicates that parole boards use a great deal of subjective evaluation in making their decisions. Many of the subjective concepts used by parole boards can be measured objectively through a grounding in criminological theory. A model of parole outcome prediction which measures objectively several of the previously subjective variables, including …

The Effects Of Situational Access To Firearms On Sensitivity To Risk Of Criminal Victimization: A Contextual Analysis., Roberta Loupe St. Pierre Jan 1991

The Effects Of Situational Access To Firearms On Sensitivity To Risk Of Criminal Victimization: A Contextual Analysis., Roberta Loupe St. Pierre

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this research is on the association of the availability of firearms for protection and fear of crime. More specifically, the study explores the relationship of firearms to persons' sensitivity to perceived risk of criminal victimization. The data used were drawn from a state-wide survey of Louisiana residents conducted in 1984. The research was directed by the long-standing inability of researchers to identify any relationship between guns and fear of crime, although it has long been assumed that such a relationship does exist. This study used the innovative strategy of examining fear of crime levels in their relationship …

Paradigm Restrictions On Interdisciplinary Research Into Librarianship, Jeffrey Gatten Jan 1991

Paradigm Restrictions On Interdisciplinary Research Into Librarianship, Jeffrey Gatten

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Scholars are becoming increasingly interdisciplinary in their approach to research, but traditional structures of knowledge within the social sciences may limit their ability to view a phenomenon in its entirety. This citation study examines the extent to which interdisciplinary research into librarianship is restricted by paradigms. The study uses library science and sociology journal articles that address the sociological aspect of libraries. The data indicate that interdisciplinary research into the applied discipline of librarianship is inhibited by paradigms.

Relaxing Traditional Economic Assumptions And Values: Toward A New Disciplinary Discourse On Law, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt Jan 1991

Relaxing Traditional Economic Assumptions And Values: Toward A New Disciplinary Discourse On Law, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Economics has been viewed traditionally as a discipline removed from other, "softer", fields of social analysis. Professor R. Malloy has fought to remove these barriers and encourage interdisciplinary dialogue. In a field previously dominated by normative values of majority power holders, a multidisciplinary approach allows for a more extensive examination of social trends and the question of innate human "rights". By relaxing the assumptions of traditional neoclassical economic analysis, one can gain a theoretical perspective that includes insights from multiple disciplines. This article reinforces Malloy's conceptualization of new social analysis, hoping to further this new interdisciplinary cooperation.

Sanctions And Rewards In The Legal System: A Multidisciplinary Approach, A Wr Carrothers

Dalhousie Law Journal

This book consists of ten essays on the general theme of effective techniques for controlling and regulating social behaviour. The authors draw on the disciplines of management studies, history and criminology, public policy studies and economics, psychology, anthropology, law, sociology, and political science. They are, collectively, a modern manifestation of Roscoe Pound's concept of law in action as "social engineering".

Book Review Essay: Brazilian Race Relations In Hemispheric Perspective, Rhett S. Jones Jun 1990

Book Review Essay: Brazilian Race Relations In Hemispheric Perspective, Rhett S. Jones

Trotter Review

The late Oliver C. Cox, one of the most insightful black Americans from the leftist tradition, was not often fooled. In his classic 1948 work, Caste, Class, and Race, Cox, a long-time professor of sociology at Lincoln University in Missouri, revealed the nonsensical underpinnings of what then passed for the serious study of comparative race relations among sociologists in the United States. So successful was Cox that his book was thoroughly and deeply buried by the sociological establishment. When Pierre L. van den Berghe published Race and Racism: A Comparative Perspective in 1967, sociologists hailed his work as the …

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Civilian Conservation Centers And Contract Centers From 1984 To 1988, Robert P. Slaughter May 1990

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Civilian Conservation Centers And Contract Centers From 1984 To 1988, Robert P. Slaughter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the continuous instability of policy decisions relating to the effectiveness of Civilian Conservation Centers and Contract Centers was a result of measurable differences in performance between the two models. Six hypotheses tested differences between types of centers on six quantitative variables which were: average length of stay, job placement, hourly starting wages, educational gains in reading, math, and General Educational Development (GED). To investigate the problem, 30 Civilian Conservation Centers and 17 comparably sized Contract Centers were selected. Reports from the Department of Labor's Automated Management System provided data for comparison …

Optimism Or Hope? The Ethic Of Abundance And The Ethic Of Limits, Christopher Lasch Jan 1990

Optimism Or Hope? The Ethic Of Abundance And The Ethic Of Limits, Christopher Lasch

Sacred Heart University Review

In this essay Christopher Lasch characterizes two cultures in society, one a culture of possibility and abundance and the other the culture of limits and constraint. He exemplifies this conflict of cultures by discussing views on abortion and family policy by the two groups. The conflict of cultures is more a class confict than a political party conflict. The author's intent as he voices it is "to explain the two cultures to each other rather than make a case for one over the other."

This essay was presented as part of the Orestes Brownson Lecture Series at Sacred Heart University …

Income Inequality And The Demographic Transition, Robert Edward Wright Jan 1990

Income Inequality And The Demographic Transition, Robert Edward Wright

Digitized Theses

In this study the relationship between the distribution of income, fertility and mortality is examined in order to evaluate the role that income inequality plays in the demographic transition. It is argued that in developing nations at low levels of income there is a negative association between income inequality and fertility. In these nations, equalising transfers of income will support higher levels of fertility. In higher income developing nations, the opposite will hold and the association between income inequality and fertility is positive. In these nations, equalising transfers of income will support lower levels of fertility. With respect to mortality …

Wait-For-Change Strategy: A Dynamic Analysis Of Chinese Maternity Histories, Jiajian Chen Jan 1990

Wait-For-Change Strategy: A Dynamic Analysis Of Chinese Maternity Histories, Jiajian Chen

Digitized Theses

This study is an attempt to understand how Chinese women carried out China's fertility decline with an unprecedented speed since the mid-1970s. Based on China's large-scale In-Depth Fertility Surveys in Shaanxi (1985) and Guangdong (1987), this study tries to explain the fertility revolution with a dynamic theoretical framework which concerns not only the socio-political institutional impact on Chinese women's compliance with the birth control policy from the top down but also the effect of a supposedly all-embracing individual environment which includes socio-economic foundations and cultural "mentality" from the bottom up. Considering such a two-way interactive dynamic, a wait-for-change strategy analysis …

Success Avoidance: A Gender Neutral Theory, Geraldine Lipman King Jan 1990

Success Avoidance: A Gender Neutral Theory, Geraldine Lipman King

Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this dissertation is the development of a non-gender-specific theory of success avoidance. Because success avoidance has traditionally been viewed as a phenomenon associated with female socialization, there is an initial look at the messages given to, and responses of, men and the issue of success.

In order to provide a foundation for a more expansive theory, there is an exploration of mixed-gender groups based on quantitative and qualitative data accumulated prior to the theory's generation.

Existing motivational constructs that influenced the theory's development are acknowledged and, to various degrees, assimilated into a new orientation. Ultimately, a theory …

Explaining The State-To-State Variation In Wife Abuse Legislation, Patricia Ann Murphy Jan 1990

Explaining The State-To-State Variation In Wife Abuse Legislation, Patricia Ann Murphy

Doctoral Dissertations

This research examined the relationship between state characteristics and six kinds of state level wife abuse policy. In addition two composite measures were used. A model was developed and tested that explained the state to state variability for protection order legislation, domestic relations legislation, police reform, criminal law reform, informational legislation, distributive legislation and two composites. Regional variation was also examined. Logistic and OLS regression were used to analyze the data.

Traditional sociological and political science research use socioeconomic development characteristics of the state and measures of political ideology and competitiveness in explaining why states vary in their policies. This …

Changing Energy Futures: A Systems Approach To The Adoption Of Energy Alternatives In New Hampshire, Mark Edward Diffenderfer Jan 1990

Changing Energy Futures: A Systems Approach To The Adoption Of Energy Alternatives In New Hampshire, Mark Edward Diffenderfer

Doctoral Dissertations

In an attempt to develop a comprehensive approach to the study of the adoption of energy systems, this dissertation first critically examines a variety of approaches to this phenomenon, including market models of adoption, the adoption of innovations literature, and the social psychology of attitudes and behavior. Market models are seen as generally reductionistic and the argument is made that they fail to take into consideration a variety of non-cost considerations. The assumption here is that while price considerations play a role in this process, decisions are also affected by values and attitudes which are not directly incorporated into market …
