Indirect Estimation Of Pre-Census Baseline In The Aftermath Of A War, Sulaiman M. Bah, Mohammed Mahibur-Rahman Nov 1995

Indirect Estimation Of Pre-Census Baseline In The Aftermath Of A War, Sulaiman M. Bah, Mohammed Mahibur-Rahman

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Pre-censal estimates help in proper planning for the execution of a census. After the end of a destabilizing war, these pre-censal estimates cannot be easily obtained. The paper proposes how pre-censal estimates can be obtained in the aftermath of a war using indirect estimation techniques. This involves the estimation of probabilities of mortality and of emigration obtained from survival models and multiple decrement life tables.

Editor's Note, Michael E. Herz Apr 1995

Editor's Note, Michael E. Herz

Cardozo Law Review

Francis Lieber's Legal and Political Hermeneutics was originally planned as a chapter in his Manual of Political Ethics. In 1837, while the larger work was in progress, this section was published under the title Political Hermeneutics, as a single, seventyeight page volume by the firm of Charles C. Little and James Brown. An expanded version, with modifications throughout and the addition of what is now chapter VII, then appeared as two articles in The American Jurist and Law Magazine in 1837 and 1838. After further additions and alterations, the articles were in turn published in book form by …

Facts, Things, And The Orphans Of Girard College: Francis Lieber, Protopragmatist, Aviam Soifer Apr 1995

Facts, Things, And The Orphans Of Girard College: Francis Lieber, Protopragmatist, Aviam Soifer

Cardozo Law Review

Rufus Choate, the dominant and domineering Boston lawyer and orator, once described Francis Lieber as "the most fertile, indomitable, unsleeping, combative and propagandizing person of his race." Lieber was indeed always scrambling, always proposing projects and looking for work, always reading and thinking and investigating. The proud inventor of words such as "penology," "bureaucracy," and "jural," Lieber delighted in terming himself a "publicist," yet another of his English neologisms. From his arrival in the United States in 1827 to his death in 1872, Lieber was a restless initiator who managed to be influential in myriad ways in his adopted land, …

The Virtues Of Interpretation In A Jural Society, Mike Robert Horenstein Apr 1995

The Virtues Of Interpretation In A Jural Society, Mike Robert Horenstein

Cardozo Law Review

This Essay could perhaps be titled "Why Lieber Now?": for this seems to me an unavoidable question when reviving a figure who has seemingly been lost in the archives. We encounter problems on all fronts, and just to ignore them and go about resuscitating Lieber would only provide an opportunity to quip that the operation 'was successful, though the patient died (was actually long dead). Even at the time of its publication, William Kent, Chancellor Kent's son, remarked of Lieber's Legal and Political Hermeneutics," 'What, in God's name, made you choose 'Hermeneutics'? ... Had you called your... …

The Global Electronic Community: Modeling The Sociology Of Self-Organization, Joan Roca, William Ammentorp, Thomas Morgan Jan 1995

The Global Electronic Community: Modeling The Sociology Of Self-Organization, Joan Roca, William Ammentorp, Thomas Morgan

Library Services Publications

The revolution in telecommunications of the past decade has brought about fundamental changes in the patterns of professional communication. Internet and other electronic networks make it possible for geographically-dispersed individuals to engage in meaningful dialog concerning common problems. These exchanges result in a Global Electronic Community which is unique in human experience. This is a community that is truly self-organizing in that it can take on new forms momentarily. Consequently, it is a dynamic community with continually-changing membership and structure; a society populated with both human and electronic agents. It is, as a result, more complex in the roles its …

Leaving Parental Homes In Canada: An Examination Of Gender, Family And Culture, Zhihong Zhao Jan 1995

Leaving Parental Homes In Canada: An Examination Of Gender, Family And Culture, Zhihong Zhao

Digitized Theses

This dissertation first explores a theoretical synthesis for the home-leaving of young adults in Canada. It proposes that home-leaving decisions are made at the family level, instead of at the individual level. While young adults may base their considerations concerning their living arrangements primarily on their own self-interest, parents are more likely to consider not only their own interests but also the best interests of their children. Young adults from social groups with different levels of familism will also have different patterns of home-leaving.;The analysis involves the life table and the proportional hazards models, as well as logistic regression, using …

Professionalization Of Occupational Therapists: A Study Of Emergent Identities, Lou Ann Sooy Griswold Jan 1995

Professionalization Of Occupational Therapists: A Study Of Emergent Identities, Lou Ann Sooy Griswold

Doctoral Dissertations

The unprecedented demand for occupational therapists and resulting growth in student numbers necessitates the need to understand how students acquire professional ideology, learn expected role behavior, and identify themselves as occupational therapists. This ethnographic study includes interview data from a series of three interviews with 37 trainees, from freshmen to the first year of employment, who had been or were in the occupational therapy program at Worcester State College, in central Massachusetts. Students included women and men who were preparing for either a first or second career. Interviews with six academic faculty and seven fieldwork supervisors in three areas of …

The Nation-State And Its Ideology: A Study Of School Children's Views Of Nationalism, Politics, And Enmity, Linda June Olson Jan 1995

The Nation-State And Its Ideology: A Study Of School Children's Views Of Nationalism, Politics, And Enmity, Linda June Olson

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the reproduction and ideological legitimization of the nation-state in the eyes of successive generations. There are two components to this study. The first is a socio-historical analysis of the formation of nation-state ideology, a formation which seems to necessitate creation of "in-groups" and "out-groups." It is a socio-historical analysis of victimization, of the tendency to justify colonialism, expansionism, imperialism, and brutality to outsiders.

The second component of this study is concerned with how the ideology of the nation-state regarding nationalism, patriotism, and especially classification of enemy groups, is reproduced and legitimized for future generations. For this purpose, …

The Impact On The Family Of Long-Term Caregiving In The Home, Holley Spangler Gimpel Jan 1995

The Impact On The Family Of Long-Term Caregiving In The Home, Holley Spangler Gimpel

Doctoral Dissertations

Families provide care in ever-increasing numbers for chronically and terminally ill family members. Previous empirical measurement of caregiver strain was generally limited to one type of care recipient population (e.g., elderly), with samples drawn primarily from metropolitan centers (and often support groups), and confined to individual assessment (i.e., primary caregiver), with outcomes of depression and anxiety. This study sought to address some of the research gaps in previous research.

In-depth caregiver and family-member interviews using both quantitative and qualitative research methods were conducted during a 10-month period throughout an entire state, composed mostly of rural and small-town populations. Examination was …

Information Technology, Employee Participation And The De-Skilling Thesis, Jay Charles Lacke Jan 1995

Information Technology, Employee Participation And The De-Skilling Thesis, Jay Charles Lacke

Doctoral Dissertations

While the de-skilling of work may involve many facets, including task simplification and the degradation of manual skills, this dissertation focuses specifically on the loss of control by workers over the organization and direction ("conception") of their own work. This focus is consistent with Harry Braverman's (1974) seminal argument that the "pivot" of capitalist management, and the core of the de-skilling thesis, is the separation of the conception of work from its execution.

Employee participation strategies whereby workers exercise discretion over the organization and conduct of work are contrary to the de-skilling thesis. But their existence is compatible with post-Braverman …

Fatal Attractions: A Sociological Study Of The Sex Ratios Of Intimate Homicide., Deann K. Gauthier Jan 1995

Fatal Attractions: A Sociological Study Of The Sex Ratios Of Intimate Homicide., Deann K. Gauthier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the question of why sex ratios of intimate killing vary across relationship type, race, and ultimately--place. The research investigates the influences of rates of family disruption and the direct and indirect affects of gender inequality in communities on various relationship and race specific sex ratios of intimate killing (SROK's). The results of OLS regression analyses reveal that the indirect effects (through family disruption) of gender inequality on relationship-specific SROK's are negligible, but the independent direct effects are considerable. Contrary to much of the criminological literature, higher female-to-male employment in a community does not lead to higher rates …

Ethnic Community Involvement And Academic Achievement Among Vietnamese-American Secondary School Students: A Community Study., Carl Leon Bankston Iii Jan 1995

Ethnic Community Involvement And Academic Achievement Among Vietnamese-American Secondary School Students: A Community Study., Carl Leon Bankston Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, I examine the role of involvement in an ethnic community in the academic achievement of Vietnamese American teenagers. I first describe the social context of these young people by discussing the situation of Vietnamese people in the United States and by offering a detailed description of a Vietnamese American community. Next, I examine how Vietnamese American students are performing in American schools and look at the characteristics of young people in the community in question. Finally, I employ data from a survey administered in the public schools of New Orleans where Vietnamese youth are concentrated in order …

The Church In Post-Transition Societies: Evidence From Eastern Europe., Mary L. Gautier Jan 1995

The Church In Post-Transition Societies: Evidence From Eastern Europe., Mary L. Gautier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I explore the relationship between religious affiliation and support for democratic values in postcommunist societies. Using the Tocquevillian idea of the institutional learning of democratic values within civil society, I examine three post-transition countries of Eastern Europe for evidence that the churches preserved and promoted democratic values during the years of Soviet regime control. Comparative historical examination of the relationship between the institutional churches and the state during the years of communist regime control demonstrate how the churches worked to preserve and promote democratic values. In those countries where the churches were marginalized and excluded from power by the state …

Mediation: A Feminist Inquiry, Nell J. Damon Jan 1995

Mediation: A Feminist Inquiry, Nell J. Damon

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Feminist academicians and activists have been working diligently for decades to incorporate the experience of women into existing theory and research. The field of mediation and negotiation is no exception. Mediation, a form of conflict resolution, has become a more widespread alternative to litigation in recent years. Supporters describe it as a balanced, fair, and egalitarian mode for the resolution of disputes and the construction of agreements. Disputants come to the mediation table as "equals." Power imbalances are supposedly left at the door. Mediation empowers disputants, allowing them to create agreements, while litigation requires disputants to passively accept the -judgment …

Developing An Exchange Network Simulator, Barry N. Markovsky Jan 1995

Developing An Exchange Network Simulator, Barry N. Markovsky

Faculty Publications

"X-Net" is a computer simulation that I developed in conjunction with Network Exchange Theory. Users of X-Net can explore the effects of different network structures, rules of exchange, and negotiators' strategies on the dynamics and outcomes of resource exchanges in social networks. This article recounts the process of X-Net's development, in addition to key substantive, theoretical, and design issues that motivated its form and content. It concludes with a discussion of the relationship between theory, simulation, and empirical tests.

Pilot Creek: An Application And Analysis Of Alternative Dispute Resolution Methods Applied To Interaction Between The United States Forest Service And Public, Julius A. Marks

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Ecosystem management demands that the United States Forest Service (U.S.F.S.) include historically excluded viewpoints in managing the forest. This project explored the use of facilitation, by a third party, to help the U.S.F.S. and interested public citizens cooperatively work together as ecosystem management plans were finalized in the Pilot Creek Drainage in Six Rivers National Forest. The objective of this project was to aid both the U.S.F.S. and the public in making new cooperative/ collaborative relationships for ecosystem management. This objective was carried out by establishing "information exchange” meetings between historical adversaries, the U.S.F.S. and prominent environmental activists. This project …

What Is Development Communication?, Anura Goonasekera Jan 1995

What Is Development Communication?, Anura Goonasekera

Research outputs pre 2011

Development communication is often looked upon, by writers on the subject, as a tool to bring about development in less developed countries. In this sense, what is emphasised is the use of communication media for development. In a recently published Orientation and Resource Kit on Development Communication by UNESCO, Mayo and Servaes (1994) begin with the observation, that communication media are often called upon to support development programmes. They go on to state that, whereas development strategies could vary within and across countries, the communication activities associated with them are often quite similar. These activities are informing people about specific …

Visions Of A Healthy Community In Alternative Health Care, Lisa H. Jackson Jan 1995

Visions Of A Healthy Community In Alternative Health Care, Lisa H. Jackson

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The American health care system is undergoing rapid change. The Clinton Administration is in the process of restructuring not only the way health care is delivered but is attempting to make access to health care more inclusive. This change will affect patients (the public), insurance companies, doctors, and the burgeoning alternative health care industry. Statistically, there is an increase in the number of people who are turning to and utilizing alternative health care as their preferred method of treatment. This thesis attempts to determine the prevalence of alternative health care use in the Arcata/Eureka area and to assess if it …

The Power Of Social Exchange: Gift Giving Vs. Economic Exchange, Shawn E. Siah Jan 1995

The Power Of Social Exchange: Gift Giving Vs. Economic Exchange, Shawn E. Siah

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Past experimental research on the distribution of power in social networks indicated that central positions in a social network have a significant exchange advantage over peripheral positions. All of these studies have focused on economic exchange situations, in which the economic rewards are the sole basis of the exchange. These studies have not examined social exchange situations, in which the exchange of social courtesy between network positions is seen as important or more important than the economic rewards being exchanged. An experiment was designed to test a hypothesis about social exchange situations suggested by anthropological research. The hypothesis is that …

Attitudes Of Elementary Principals Toward Parent Involvement In Schools In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Linda V. Brittle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the attitudes of principals toward parent involvement in schools. The population for the study consisted of all public school elementary principals in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A random sample procedure was employed and an instrument was developed specifically for the study. An initial and second mailing resulted in an overall response rate of 53%. Factor analysis identified 5 groupings in parent involvement. Factors were labeled: Decision-Making, Policy-Making, Home Tutor/Co-Learner, Socio-Economic Status, and Parent Desire and Expertise. Seven null hypotheses were formulated and tested for the study. It was found that …
