Bodies Of Law, Moira Mcconnell
Bodies Of Law, Moira Mcconnell
Dalhousie Law Journal
"Don't judge a book by its cover" is a maxim most frequently recited to children by adults to explain the idea that one should not judge people on the basis of appearance. This maxim captures the gist of the topic explored in Alan Hyde's Bodies of Law. Bodies of Law seeks to expose the fact that we simultaneously view a person as an entity distinct from her or his physical manifestation while our understanding and response to a person is affected by our perceptions and judgments regarding their physical characteristics.

The Making, Unmaking And Remaking Of A National But Stratified Vital Statistics System In The Republic Of South Africa, Sulaiman M. Bah
PSC Discussion Papers Series
The political history of South Africa had direct effect on the development of vital statistics in that country. The paper looks at the dynamics of the making, unmaking and remaking of a national but stratified vital statistics system in South Africa. The paper also outlines the crucial roles played by key players in the process. This historical context of vital statistics has implications for demographic teaching and research.

Probing Probation : Issues Of Gender And Organisation Within The Probation Service, Jill Annison
Probing Probation : Issues Of Gender And Organisation Within The Probation Service, Jill Annison
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This study focuses on the probation service and the changes that are impacting on this part of the criminal justice system. It develops a theoretically distinctive approach, drawing on the literature of gender and organisations, in order to investigate issues relating to the organisational structures and processes experienced by male and female probation officers in three disparate probation areas in England. The opening two chapters examine the development of the organisation in terms of the hierarchical roles within the service and the gendered distribution of probation officer staff across the various grades. This review provides a unique understanding of the …
Gender And Personality In The Stress Process, Daniel David Cervi
Gender And Personality In The Stress Process, Daniel David Cervi
Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the influence of gender and several personality characteristics in the stress process using a cross-sectional study of 443 university students from a mid-size public New England university, a New England Catholic college, and a mid-size private Florida university. Three models are tested to consider the direct, mediating, and moderating effects of gender and personality on the stress outcomes of drug/alcohol use; non-substance deviant behavior; and depressive symptomatology.
Model 1 tests the antecedent effects of gender and personality to determine their influence on stress outcomes. The main effect of gender explained the largest portion of variance for drug/alcohol …
"The Tawnee Family": The Life Course Of Indian Value Adaptation For Eleazar Wheelock's Indian Scholars, Stacy Lynn S Hogsett
"The Tawnee Family": The Life Course Of Indian Value Adaptation For Eleazar Wheelock's Indian Scholars, Stacy Lynn S Hogsett
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is a study of value adaptation by the southern New England Indians who attended Moor's Charity School, in Lebanon, Connecticut, between 1743 and 1770. These Indians were part of New Light Minister Eleazar Wheelock's extended household, dubbed by one student, the "tawnee family." This designation distinguished these Indian scholars as surrogate members of the Wheelock family. I analyzed how the Indian students adapted to, resisted and reformed the values taught at Moor's as they grew to adulthood.
I drew my analysis from letters collected in the Eleazar Wheelock Papers housed at Dartmouth College. My arguments are drawn principally …
Silent Partners: The Economic Life Of Women On The Frontier Of Colonial New York, Aileen Button Agnew
Silent Partners: The Economic Life Of Women On The Frontier Of Colonial New York, Aileen Button Agnew
Doctoral Dissertations
The Hudson-Mohawk frontier of eighteenth-century New York made both a boundary and a meeting place for several cultures. The shops and retail spaces of this borderland provided a common space for the convergence of women and their work with the more visible male-dominated economy. As recorded in local account books, black, white, and Indian women took part in many aspects of local commerce. As retailers, as producers, and as consumers, women participated in the world of business and accounts.
Settled in the seventeenth-century by the Dutch, this part of New York had long been occupied by Iroquoian tribes. Trade between …
The Social Construction Of Feminine Sexualities In Women's Popular Periodicals: 1920-1996, Judith Jackson Pomeroy
The Social Construction Of Feminine Sexualities In Women's Popular Periodicals: 1920-1996, Judith Jackson Pomeroy
Doctoral Dissertations
Some of the most significant changes in women's statuses and roles have occurred over the last eight decades. These changes in women's lives have been precipitated by social, economic, political, and cultural arrangements and technological developments. In varying degrees, some of the most significant of these events have had the effect of transforming women's lives in this century. Since these events have also led to shifts in perceptions of feminine status, roles, and sexuality that mirror and reinforce women's changing reality, we might anticipate a parallel transformation in cultural representations of feminine sexuality.
This study relies on two popular women's …
The Field Of Meanings Of Childlessness In Contemporary Film Culture, Susan Marie Ross
The Field Of Meanings Of Childlessness In Contemporary Film Culture, Susan Marie Ross
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine contemporary cultural meanings of female childlessness and come to understand these meanings in relation to historical meanings of childlessness. The contemporary shifts in the meaning of childlessness reflect America's struggle with women's changing social roles, particularly since the mid-1960s. As more women are stepping outside of the domestic sphere and forging new nondomestic pathways, the meaning of childlessness is undergoing changes and reflects our culture's ambiguity about women's new roles.
In order to examine the shifts in themes regarding childlessness, this study focuses on the thematic analysis of 67 films released by …

Living Arrangements Of The Elderly In The United States: Comparing Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, And Asians' Households., Kiyomi Ando
Living Arrangements Of The Elderly In The United States: Comparing Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, And Asians' Households., Kiyomi Ando
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
My dissertation analyzed the living arrangements of the elderly, focusing on differences across gender and racial/ethnic lines. Drawing upon rational choice and family solidarity theoretical perspectives. I derived hypotheses dealing with the effects of individual resources, cultural characteristics, and geographic context on the elderly's living arrangements. These hypotheses were empirically tested using logistic regression models to estimate the odds of the elderly choosing from among three options of living arrangements--independent living, joint living, and dependent living. Separate models were applied to non-Hispanic white, African American, Hispanic, and Asian subsamples. Data were from the 1990 Census Public Use Sample (PUMS-L). The …
Marginal Employment In The United States: 1971-1993., Nicole Thomson Flynn
Marginal Employment In The United States: 1971-1993., Nicole Thomson Flynn
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this dissertation, I examine trends in production and the concomitant demographic transformation of the labor force, in the context a series of economic cycles since 1969. Using these three forces as a backdrop, I first consider changes in employment hardship and the forces contributing to underemployment during periods following economic recessions. Then, I examine differences between men and women for employment outcomes. Next, to explain hardship during these periods, I include important demographic and geographic factors related to underemployment. Finally, I examine the impact of labor market context on individual outcomes. Based on the transformation of work, I explain …
Secondary Control: Examining The Influence Of School Restructuring On High School Delinquency., Michael O. Maume
Secondary Control: Examining The Influence Of School Restructuring On High School Delinquency., Michael O. Maume
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recent years have seen extensive debate on the multitude of problems plaguing secondary education in the United States, and the problem of school crime and deviance is gaining a sizable share of the attention. A wave of school reform sometimes labeled the "restructuring" movement suggests that major organizational changes in schools, especially public schools, can positively affect student achievement and commitment to educational goals. Yet there has been practically no attention paid to the possible effects of restructuring on reducing delinquency in schools. I examine the impact of high school restructuring on school delinquency using a broad conception of delinquency …
Gaining And Controlling Access To The Arena: Stories Of Ties In A Technological Dispute., Tobias Albert Ten Eyck
Gaining And Controlling Access To The Arena: Stories Of Ties In A Technological Dispute., Tobias Albert Ten Eyck
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This is a study of the stories told about distribution of resources and structural constraints which operate within newspaper arenas that were experienced by reporters and sources involved in coverage of food irradiation between 1987 and 1996 at two regional newspapers (Louisiana and Florida). Using an unstructured interview instrument, I conducted interviews with 40 sources and 12 newspaper reporters, which I used to construct a framework in which to show how cultural, economic and social capital are used for getting and blocking action in the newspaper arenas. These interviews show that while cultural capital was the most prominent type of …

Alcohol, Assault And Area: An Examination Of Alcohol Availability And Crime In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Stephen Edgar Costanza
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An association between alcohol and crime has been proposed for over forty years in Criminological Literature. The research conducted in this dissertation uses pooled data on alcohol, neighborhood characteristics, and crime in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. The intention of the paper is to further augment our understanding of the alcohol-crime relationship by studying it at the macro-level. Using 278 Baton Rouge block groups as units of analysis, the results of the study confirm that the presence of package-only alcohol outlets have significant effects on assault and robbery within neighborhoods.
Multi-Institutional Collaborations In Science: Structure, Types, And Outcomes., Ivan Mihailov Chompalov
Multi-Institutional Collaborations In Science: Structure, Types, And Outcomes., Ivan Mihailov Chompalov
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The advent of modern "big science" brings about a new kind of research formation: multi-institutional collaborations involving teams of researchers from several organizations. Despite their recent proliferation and visibility, no general classification of these "virtual organizations" exists. This study adopts a macrosociological, comparative perspective to develop a variety of classification schemes that capture the systematic variation of interorganizational collaborations in science along basic structural dimensions and to examine the relationships of these classifications with important sociological outcomes. Qualitative, historical analysis of collaborations in high-energy physics, space science, and geophysics showed that, when we set aside field-specific differences, seven general dimensions …
Beat Sociology: Ethnographic Journeys In Event Spaces, Jonathan R Wynn
Beat Sociology: Ethnographic Journeys In Event Spaces, Jonathan R Wynn
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Beat Sociology: Ethnographic Journeys in Event Spaces proposes a new theory and methodology for Sociology to better investigate and describe the social experiences of individuals. I call this new set of theories and methodologies Beat Sociology--I have developed this project utilizing the work of Beat writers (Kerouac, Ginsberg and Burroughs), as well as social theorists (particularly Walter Benjamin and C. Wright Mills). Drawing from critical theory, postmodernism and ethnography, I develop three central 'themes' that help facilitate my project: identity, space, and migrancy. Through auto-ethnography I explore three types of Las Vegas spaces: event spaces, casino spaces and Fremont Street. …
The Media's Influence On Welfare Recipients' Self Perceptions, Candice L. Ludlow
The Media's Influence On Welfare Recipients' Self Perceptions, Candice L. Ludlow
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This is a two-fold study of the media's influence on welfare recipients' self perceptions. The research focuses on how news stories about welfare effect women who receive Aid to Families with Dependent Children. It is my contention that welfare recipients have increasingly been scapegoated through the media by politicians and policymakers for the economic woes of this country. Welfare recipients are also blamed for their economic position in society. Historically, the discourse in the popular media neglects structural issues of poverty. Instead the debate focuses on changing welfare recipients' behaviors, by means such as denying benefits to those who conceive …

This report documents the evaluation of the Project Challenge Pilot Program (PCPP) in Humboldt County, Ca. PCPP provided rehabilitative services on an out-patient basis to inmates after release from jail. It's multi-agency approach facilitated by County Sheriff's Department made it both a unique and bold attempt to provide case management and services. PCPP operated Spring of 1991 to the Fall of 1993. The evaluation of PCPP was conducted from 9/1991 to 8/1992, findings were presented in 1/1993. The statistics are accurate as of 1993 and should be used as a historical reference to that year. Utilized a variety of methods …
The Dilemmas Of Conflict Resolution In Central And Eastern Europe, Lisa Marie Shochat
The Dilemmas Of Conflict Resolution In Central And Eastern Europe, Lisa Marie Shochat
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
At a time when the future of Central and Eastern Europe stands tenuously between a history of authoritarian regimes and contemporary endeavors to establish political stability through democracy, it is important to investigate those social structures which hold the potential to strengthen the democratic participation and self- determinism of the population. Through an analysis of the mission and practice of dispute resolution organizations described in case studies, conference presentations, annual reports, newsletters, and web pages, the research shows how the development of mediating norms and institutions support a wide variety of goals including strengthening democratic participation, stimulating systemic changes for …
The Role Of Alternative Dispute Resolution Techniques In Siting A Multiple Assistance Center In Eureka, California, Julie A. Orth
The Role Of Alternative Dispute Resolution Techniques In Siting A Multiple Assistance Center In Eureka, California, Julie A. Orth
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
For many years, the siting of a Multiple Assistance Center (MAC) for the homeless in the Eureka area has been a contentious issue. Public outcry has prevented service providers and government representatives from siting a MAC thus far. This project has been an attempt to reduce and answer public opposition by allowing the community to participate in the siting process. By allowing their concerns to be heard and addressed via public meetings and written forms, the objective criteria for the MAC and its location was created. Next, again through meetings and mailings, all members of the community had the opportunity …

Batawat By The Sea: The Wiyot In Mckinleyville, California, Dorothy Lavalle
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis is an interpretive ethnography using a heuristic approach in reconstructing the history of the Wiyot people through analysis of pertaining historical and anthropological literature, broadened with information from ethnographic interviews done in the last ten years with Indian and non-Indian community members. Batawat is the northern Wiyot district, located on the Mad River in Humboldt County, California, interrupted and eventually destroyed by American colonization in the 1850s and 1860s. The surviving Batawats returned after removal, to live in far more sparse and restricted circumstances in McKinleyville, the site of Batawat sacred and residential areas. Some Batawats remained on …
The Origin, Development, And Regulation Of Norms, Richard H. Mcadams
The Origin, Development, And Regulation Of Norms, Richard H. Mcadams
Michigan Law Review
For decades, sociologists have employed the concept of social norms to explain how society shapes individual behavior. In recent years, economists and rational choice theorists in philosophy and political science have started to use individual behavior to explain the origin and function of norms. For many in this group, the focus of study is the interaction of law and norms, of formal and informal rules. Exemplified by Robert Ellickson's Order Without Law, this literature uses norms to develop more robust explanations of behavior and to predict more accurately the effect of legal rules. Norms turn out to matter in legal …

Early Life Transitions Of Canadian Women: A Cohort Analysis Of Timing, Sequences, And Variations, Zenaida R. Ravanera, Rajulton Fernando, Thomas K. Burch
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This paper looks into the timing and sequences of early life transitions of Canadian women using data from the 1995 General Social Survey of Family and Friends. Six events occurring in early adulthood are examined: school completion, first job, home-leaving, first cohabitation, first marriage, and first birth. Our analysis of birth cohorts spanning 60 years shows that the biggest changes in timing occurred in school completion and start of work; that the trajectories involving work before marriage have gained popularity among later cohorts; and that education appreciably delays early life transitions.
