Social networking sites are now essential in daily life. In the ever-evolving landscape of communication, social media has emerged as a dominant force that shapes how nursing students connect, share, and perceive ourselves and others. While these platforms offer unprecedented opportunities for virtual interaction, they also raise important questions about their influence on nursing students' psychological well-being and the phenomenon of social comparison. The aim of this study is to gain a contemporary understanding of the impact of social media on students' psychological well-being, focusing on aspects such as stress, anxiety and depression, and the phenomenon of social comparison.

Role Of Social Media In Adolescent-Parent Relationships Among At-Risk Youths, Jennifer Davis, Jessica L. Hart
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
This study aimed to understand the role of adolescents’ and parents’ social media use in relation to adolescents’ reported at-risk behaviors, as well as the effect of social media on the relationships between at-risk youths and their parents. Semi-structured interviews, based on interpretive phenomenological analysis, were conducted with six pairs of individuals, 12 total participants. Each pair consisted of an adolescent between the ages of 13 and 17 and their parent. Data analysis resulted in three themes: Negativity they encountered on social media did not stop adolescents from using social media. Parental monitoring was problematized by parents’ lack of knowledge …

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that expectant and new mothers consult and value information gathered from digital technologies, such as pregnancy-specific mobile apps and social media platforms, to support their transition to parenting. Notably, this transitional context can be rich with profound physiological, psychological, and emotional fluctuation for women as they cope with the demands of new parenting and navigate the cultural expectations of "good motherhood." Given the ways in which digital technologies can both support and hinder women's perceptions of their parenting abilities, understanding expectant and new mothers' experiences using digital technologies and the tensions that may arise from such use …

Partisan Selective Exposure On Social Media During The 2020 Presidential Election, Grayce Lemon
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
This study examines selective exposure and selective avoidance on social media during the 2020 presidential election. 147 voters participated in the survey conducted using Qualtrics. The purpose of this study was to understand whether selective exposure and avoidance behaviors differed based on voting outcome (Trump or Biden), and to test whether political ideological polarization was reflected in news consumption through social media. Taken together, the results indicate that although both voting bases engaged in selective exposure and avoidance, the propensity was the same between Trump and Biden voters. Additionally, results confirm existing hypotheses that strength of political ideology positively correlates …

The Perspective Of University Students On The Availability And Effectiveness Of Cyberbullying Prevention And Response Initiatives On Campus: Virtual Semi-Structured Interviews On Resources, Barriers, And Solutions, Molly-Gloria R. Patel, Anabel Quan-Haase
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Cyberbullying is a problem in educational settings, and much of the research has focused on the development of effective prevention and response initiatives. Because of the vulnerability of children, cyberbullying research and intervention programs have largely targeted elementary students. A growing body of research has shown that cyberbullying is not limited to elementary settings, but the problem is also prevalent in postsecondary institutions, with potentially severe negative consequences. Yet, there is a gap in research about interventions tailored to this life stage. To address this gap, we conducted virtual semistructured interviews through Zoom with 21 university students on the availability …
Building Solidarity Between Minority Groups, Seonwoo Kim
Building Solidarity Between Minority Groups, Seonwoo Kim
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Although a considerable number of scholars agree that an intergroup coalition among minorities will be more powerful in changing biased perceptions, regulations, and policies (e.g., Burson & Godfrey, 2020; Lane et al., 2019), cross-minority solidarity is challenging due to the inherent difficulties in establishing a shared goal and reaching a consensus on methods and tactics (Gawerc, 2021; Rogers, 2004) and competing policy stances and stereotypes (Hope, 2019; Nopper, 2006). Numerous instances of social movements that failed due to the failure of coalitions to form have been documented in the literature (e.g., Almeida, 2010; Ferree & Roth, 1998; Gelb & Shogan, …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
"The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed society and undeniably impacted wellbeing. With the advent of smartphones and social media, a host of empirical articles, popular press pieces, non-fiction books, and documentaries have highlighted the potential negative effects of technology, such as addiction, loneliness, and depression (e.g., Alter, 2017; Twenge et al., 2018; Orlowski, 2020). While it is important to acknowledge and address the potentially detrimental effects of this increasing technological reliance, we believe that it is imperative that researchers, developers, and users embrace a more balanced approach that also recognizes the positive potential of digital technology to support …

Design Considerations For Supporting Social Interaction In Algorithmic Social Media Feed, Daehyun Kwak, Heejae Bae, Youn-Kyung Lim
IASDR Conference Series
Nowadays, social media platforms employ recommender systems to proactively suggest the posts that a user is likely to prefer, even if it comes from strangers (e.g., the “Suggested Posts” feature on Instagram). Previous studies revealed that these algorithmic recommendations influence users’ social interaction practices in social media. However, there is little attempt to investigate how social media feeds should be designed to ensure the social interactions users truly want. Given this background, we conducted four design workshops aiming to explore design considerations for social media feeds that can support users’ social interactions under the impact of algorithmic recommendations. Based on …
#1 On The U.S. Most Wanted List: Why The Push Is On To Ban The World’S Most Successful Startup From Academic, Government And Military Devices In The United States, Tom Waters
GNSI Publications
TikTok is a social media application that has amassed over 100 million users in the United States. Yet the Biden White House, like the Trump Administration before it, seeks to ban TikTok, or at least force it’s divestment from the parent company, Bytedance. For many the question is how can an app for sharing silly dance videos among teenagers be a national security threat? Unfortunately, the problem is considerably more complex than this simple question. TikTok’s unprecedented success comes from its powerful artificial intelligence-based algorithm.
That activity produces a comprehensive psychological profile of each user and tailors the queue of …

The ubiquity of social media has enabled an unprecedented amount of personal data to be accessible to various entities. Social media platforms leverage this data to optimize algorithmic recommendation systems, persuade users to engage, and promote monetization. The social media ecosystem’s business model demands continuous engagement and the relentless collection of user data to grow and scale. Not only is social media massively popular around the world, but it has integrated heavily into users’ daily lives. This integration is driven by social platforms’ deliberate architectures and affordances. The intentionality of social media can be exploited by state and non-state actors …

Free Website Building services (FWBs) provide individuals with a cost-effective and convenient way to create a website without requiring advanced technical knowledge or coding skills. However, malicious actors often abuse these services to host phishing websites. In this work, we propose FreePhish, a scalable framework to continuously identify phishing websites that are created using FWBs. Using FreePhish, we were able to detect and characterize more than 31.4K phishing URLs that were created using 17 unique free website builder services and shared on Twitter and Facebook over a period of six months. We find that FWBs provide attackers with several features …

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works
The mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and cloves has produced a magical combination that changed the world. Like Einstein or Col. Sanders, a powerful formula was found in the right combination of elements- in this case pumpkin spice. It might be assumed that pumpkin spice has a history and tradition dating back well into previous centuries, but pumpkin spice is a relatively new construct. Nosowitz (2022) contends the pumpkin spice trend was largely created by Starbucks’ introduction of the famous pumpkin spice latte in 2003.
To explore how social media users have discussed topics related to pumpkin spice, researchers …

The Gaze And The Other On Social Media: Reexamining Existence As Human Beings In The Digital Age, Yuki Yokoi
Philosophy Honors Projects
Social media is now a prevailing tool for people and we often interact with other people on social media. Human interaction takes place both in face-to-face settings and on social media and becoming so-called influencers is a dream among teenagers. However, using social media necessarily entails exposure to the other people and social media companies. Then, is using social media existentially beneficial? I explore this question by employing arguments from Erving Goffman, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Guy Debord to explicate the existential issues which social media entails. From Sartre and Debord’s perspectives, we are inevitably objectified by the gaze when using …

Exploring The Relationship Between Mothers And Daughters As It Directly Impacts Social Media Use And Body Image From An Adolescent’S Perspective, Desiree Winslow Saleh
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how adolescent females between the ages of thirteen and nineteen feel and think about their relationship with their mothers, and examine how this impacts social media use and body image. Although greatly and typically applied to quantitative research studies, the tripartite influence model of body image was the primary theory that guided this study. With the immediate accessibility to social media platforms, young women are recognizing a decline in their body satisfaction. Social media serves as another social pressure for adolescents to navigate and is filtered through their pre-existing perceptions of …
