The study will bring out a consumer’s perspective of the advantages of social media over traditional marketing methods.

I Am Human Rights: Leveraging Social Media Identity Recasting For Human Rights Acceptance In The United States, Noah Echols
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
This paper explores how consumer identity is evolving as a response to technology and how for-profit brands are leveraging that identity evolution. It then posits that in order for human rights to become normalized in the United States, human rights NGOs must adopt the same strategics as their for-profit competitors or risk losing the next generation and becoming obsolete.
Sweetness And Strength: Codes Of Femininity And Body Image In Branded Social-Networking Messages And Consumer Responses, Anne M. Holcomb
Sweetness And Strength: Codes Of Femininity And Body Image In Branded Social-Networking Messages And Consumer Responses, Anne M. Holcomb
Masters Theses
This study critically analyzes visual and text updates posted by two clothing brands to the social-networking site Facebook.com, including consumers' interaction with these marketing messages. A semiological textual analysis was conducted using Facebook updates by the Victoria's Secret PINK and Nike Women apparel brands, and the responses of fans who subscribed to these updates. Advertising aimed at women in print media has previously been analyzed in this way, revealing patterns of sexualization and objectification that can be harmful to women and men alike. My analysis builds on this tradition. Social-networking sites such as Facebook allow individual users unprecedented access to …

Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to determine the role that professional networking websites, such as LinkedIn, play in the hiring decisions of talent recruiters at major advertising and public relations firms. A study of literature relating to social media, traditional recruitment techniques and legal implications regarding the use of networking websites in the hiring process provided a foundation for the study. Primary research, in the form of online surveys distributed to hiring managers at some of the largest international advertising and public relations firms, was conducted to set a foundation for understanding the use of networking websites in the …

What?! You’Re Still Managing Your Library’S Facebook Page Yourself?, Ngoc-Yen Tran
Faculty and Staff Publications
Within a few months, Pearson Library at California Lutheran University went from having 15 likes to 111 likes. What's our secret to having a thriving Facebook page? How did we use this medium in a new way? There are many reasons as to why a library’s Facebook page is not successful and we experienced some those challenges: lack of time, we did not know what to post, we did not have many “likes”, and we did not know how often to post. The solution to many of our problems was to hire a student to help manage the page. With …
The Unintended Consequences Of Social Media On Media-Raised Generation, Elijah N. Odundo
The Unintended Consequences Of Social Media On Media-Raised Generation, Elijah N. Odundo
Research Papers
While there are promising benefits to using social media as a tool of productivity and expression, “media-raised” generation needs to understand the truths of social media in order to avoid the unintended consequences that are inherent in its use. One of the first truths about social media is the ability to conveniently enable conversations and sharing of information among targeted audience. However, when social media gets to know its users so well then there should be some cautionary measures that needs to be taken to avoid the unintended consequences. Some teens describe becoming so hooked on online social networking that …

Mediated Voyeurism On Social Networking Sites: The Possible Social Needs And Potential Motivations Of The Voyeurs On Facebook, Pin Ju Su
Theses
Previous studies on social networking sites have failed to comprehensively address the mediated voyeurism in the Internet. The features of Facebook enable millions to follow their friends, which can contribute to mediated voyeurism online. The purpose of this study is to explain the voyeuristic tendencies of Facebook users. An online survey was used to obtain self-reported levels of voyeuristic tendencies and both the social needs (social comparison and social identity) and motivations (surveillance, uncertainty reduction, and uses and gratifications) of Facebook users. Findings suggest that the voyeuristic tendencies on Facebook were positively related to the aforementioned social needs and motivations.

Web Based Marketing Plan For The Polished Pet Boarding Kennel In Santa Maria, Ca, Lauren Marie Frias
Agribusiness
The great recession in the United States has caused consumers to change their spending habits. The recession comes at a time when consumers had already become accustomed to increasing levels of service from sellers of goods and services as businesses incorporate new technologies to attract customers and improve cost efficiencies. Customers are now accustomed to and expect price competitiveness, excellent service, 24 hour availability, convenience and value added amenities. For a business to compete in this environment, it must continually find innovative strategies in the utilization of existing and developing technologies and applications to distinguish it from competitors. At the …

Beyond The First Amendment: Shaping The Contours Of Commercial Speech In Video Games, Virtual Worlds And Social Media, Jon M. Garon
Faculty Scholarship
In Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association (2011), the Supreme Court stated unequivocally that video games are entitled to the same broad First Amendment protections as those afforded to other media. But just as laws and regulations distinguish newspaper, magazine and television content from the advertising sold in those media, new policies are required to distinguish the communicative content of video games, virtual worlds and social media from the advertising and commercial purpose activity conducted in those media. Particularly in the area of publicity rights, states and courts have struggled to delineate those contours. This article outlines the emerging contours of …

Social Media And The Press, Lili Levi
Articles
The Internet and social media are transforming news as we knew it, yet the precise consequences of these changes are not yet clear. Journalists now rely on Twitter, crowdsourcing is available through social media, facts and stories are googled, traditional print newspapers have websites and reporter blogs, "open newsrooms" invite community participation in the editorial process itself, video from citizen journalists is commonly used in mainstream media storytelling, bloggers consider themselves journalists, and media consolidation marries entities like AOL and the Huffington Post. In turn, changes in the news-access practices of readers are increasingly influencing the length, breadth, and subjects …

Revolutions And Expatriates: Social Networking, Ubiquitous Media And The Disintermediation Of The State, Jon M. Garon
Revolutions And Expatriates: Social Networking, Ubiquitous Media And The Disintermediation Of The State, Jon M. Garon
Faculty Scholarship
This article explores the modern disruption of the state as the territorial control over its citizens and the restructuring of these social structures caused by social media and the unmediated communication of the digital age. Nowhere has this transformation been greater than in the Middle East, a region shaped by arbitrary political expediency and under tremendous popular pressure to redefine itself. But these transformations are not merely the populist uprisings of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria; they can be seen in economic transformations of Asia and economic harmonizations between Europe and North America. In all political, economic and social spheres, …
‘America’S “Engagement” Delusion: Critiquing A Public Diplomacy Consensus’, Hamilton Bean, Edward Comor
‘America’S “Engagement” Delusion: Critiquing A Public Diplomacy Consensus’, Hamilton Bean, Edward Comor
FIMS Publications
The Obama administration has embraced ‘engagement’ as the dominant concept informing US public diplomacy. Despite its emphasis on facilitating dialogue with and among Muslims overseas, this article demonstrates that, in practice, engagement aims to leverage social media and related technologies to persuade skeptical audiences to empathize with American policies. Indeed, its primary means of implementation – participatory interactions with foreign publics – is inherently duplicitous. Through the authors’ description of how engagement is rooted in long-standing public relations and corporate marketing discourses, and in light of the historical and structural foundations of anti-Americanism, this contemporary public diplomacy strategy is shown …
Customer Revenue Sharing And User Reward Programs In Online Social Media, Fouad H. Mirzaei, Fredrik Odegaard, Xinghao Yan
Customer Revenue Sharing And User Reward Programs In Online Social Media, Fouad H. Mirzaei, Fredrik Odegaard, Xinghao Yan
Business Publications
Online social media (OSMs) have become a popular and growing phenomenon on the Internet, as exemplified by the millions of followers of websites like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Given the ease of access and high competition over the Internet to attract users, a question that arises is whether OSMs should develop revenue sharing programs and reward their contributing users. Aiming to expand market share and boost revenue, some OSMs recently have realized the influence of these programs in changing the outcome of their online competition. We model this competition by a duopoly game where users are either active or passive …

The Impact Of Facebook Access In Creating A Sense Of Community In Tourism And Recreation Classes, Lorie A. Tuma
Presidential Alumni Research Dissemination Award
Previous research has indicated that college students use social networking sites such as Facebook to establish friendships, maintain communication, and foster a sense of community; research also has indicated that many college instructors do not. Many college faculty acknowledge the importance of a sense of community in the classroom but are reluctant to try social media as a way to enhance student motivation, affective learning, and classroom climate. The purpose of this ex post facto, causal comparative study was to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in tourism and recreation students' self-reported sense of community when an instructor's …

This project investigated the legal contract to which users must agree before creating a Facebook account. Multi-methodological in nature, this research explored user knowledge and perception of the contract as well as how the contract measures up to the principles which Facebook claims serve as its foundation. For the quantitative portion of this analysis, a survey including measures of knowledge and perception was administered to respondents. The qualitative portion critically compared Facebook’s legal contract to the list of principles espoused by the company on their website. These analyses reveal that users rarely read this contract before agreeing to it, tend …
