The Impact Of Health Insurance Coverage On Short-Term And Long-Term Readmissions To The Emergency Department For Pediatric Patients With Asthma: A Retrospective Regression Analysis, Micheline Plantada
The Impact Of Health Insurance Coverage On Short-Term And Long-Term Readmissions To The Emergency Department For Pediatric Patients With Asthma: A Retrospective Regression Analysis, Micheline Plantada
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Inadequate health insurance coverage may hinder the management of asthma in children in recurrent emergency department (ED) visits in comparison to children with health care insurance. Children with asthma who do not have health insurance are at risk of not having access to primary care physicians. They may live in poorer communities, where they are more likely to encounter higher concentrations of asthma-inducing agents or factors contributing to increased healthcare utilization, resulting in increased expenditures and reduced patient outcomes.
Five Interconnections Of Race And Class, Michael Billeaux-Martinez, David Calnitsky
Five Interconnections Of Race And Class, Michael Billeaux-Martinez, David Calnitsky
Sociology Publications
This paper proposes a five-part empirical typology of interconnections of race and class. We describe the mechanisms whereby (1) race is a form of class relation; (2) race relations and class relations reciprocally affect each other; (3) race acts as a sorting mechanism into class locations; (4) race acts as a mediating linkage to class locations; and (5) race interacts with class in determining other outcomes. Rather than insisting on one or another mechanism as the overarching framework for conceptualising the interconnections between race and class, we propose a theoretical integration of all five within a functionalist model. The model …

The Wage Of Wellness: The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status, Race, And Work Recovery, Emily Julia Ready
Dissertations and Theses
A substantial share of the workforce is made up of low-income workers. Many of these workers fall below the federal poverty line and are considered low socioeconomic status (SES) and are disproportionately more likely to be racial minorities. However, this population is often neglected in the industrial-organizational psychological literature. Specifically, work recovery research has not considered the unique life circumstances of this particular group in the development of the research questions, theoretical framework, or practical implications in relation to this phenomenon. The purpose of the current study is to understand the relationship between socioeconomic status, race, and work recovery experiences …
A Curriculum Designed To Teach Elementary-Age Children In Diverse Settings The Kingdom Concept Of Loving One’S Neighbor, Abigail J. Flood
A Curriculum Designed To Teach Elementary-Age Children In Diverse Settings The Kingdom Concept Of Loving One’S Neighbor, Abigail J. Flood
ELAIA
United States Census data from 2020 show that the country is becoming increasingly diverse and urbanized. Other research shows children are aware of race from an early age and can pick up biases and stereotypes by watching the adults around them. However, there are no children’s ministry curricula that specifically address how children should navigate differences from a biblical perspective. To fill this gap, a children’s ministry curriculum was written to model how children can love their neighbors like Jesus did, especially those who look different from themselves. The curriculum is comprised of an introduction for the ministry leader, five …
Regional And Socioeconomic Factors Impacting Pediatric Victims Of Cranial Gunshot Wounds: Analysis Of The Kids’ Inpatient Database (Kid), Michael Melhem, Elise Yoon, Matthew Brennan, Enoch Kim, Yasmeen Berry, Michael Cools, Leopold Arko
Regional And Socioeconomic Factors Impacting Pediatric Victims Of Cranial Gunshot Wounds: Analysis Of The Kids’ Inpatient Database (Kid), Michael Melhem, Elise Yoon, Matthew Brennan, Enoch Kim, Yasmeen Berry, Michael Cools, Leopold Arko
Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction
Injury by firearms among the pediatric population is a growing concern in the United States. This paper investigates demographic factors associated with pediatric cranial gunshot wounds (GSW).
Methods
A query of the KID databases from 1997-2019 was run for cranial GSW and craniotomy ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. ANOVA and chi-squared tests were performed to analyze demographics and outcomes by injury type.
Results
Our query resulted in 2990 cranial GSW patients; 86.1% were male. Mean age was 16.48 years; accidental victims were the youngest and intentional the oldest (14.88±5.2, 17.2±2.3, p< 0.001). Blacks, Hispanics, and Asian-Pacific-Islanders (minorities) were most commonly victims of assault; Whites were most commonly victims of intentional GSW (p< 0.001). Victims mostly had Medicaid except for intentional victims who were more likely to have private insurance (p< 0.001). Assault was the predominant injury type in all regions, especially in the West (33.7%). The South had the most accidental (51.9%) and intentional (44.6%) injuries. In 1997 and 2019 the predominant GSW type was accidental; in all other years assault predominated. Accidental victims were most likely to undergo craniotomy and intentional were least likely (p< 0.001). Inpatient mortality was 46.4% with intentional victims having the highest rate (68.6%) then undetermined (60.3%) and law enforcement-related (57.7%).
Conclusion
Victims of assault were more likely to be …

Interracial Instagram: Depictions Of Interracial Couples On Instagram, Christie Sillo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines depictions of interracial romantic relationships on Instagram, a popular photo- and video-sharing social networking site. Social networking sites like Instagram, whereby users connect with each other by creating, sharing, and consuming content, are prime sites for sociological study because ideas are constantly being (re)made on them. On Instagram, meaning-making is mainly done through the construction of a profile and the posting of images and/or videos. Using a mixed-methods research design of hashtag analysis, digital ethnography, discourse and image analysis, I critically analyze Instagram profiles that depict interracial romantic relationships. In doing so, I develop a contemporary, social …

Staying Power: The Struggle For Space And Place In Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Erin E. Lilli
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation looks at how gentrification touches down, at the neighborhood and individual scale, in Crown Heights and reproduces experiences of racial inequality in home and place. Taking an historical materialist approach and drawing on residential oral histories, this study frames these reproductions of racial inequality as always-in-tension with ongoing acts of resistance from Black homeowners, renters, and long-term residents. Specifically, the research explores the conditions under which Black residents of a predominantly Afro-Caribbean neighborhood acquire and maintain—and in some cases lose—their housing and sense of place and belonging. These residents resist the varied tactics of anti-Blackness such as landlord …
Conflict And Race In Literature & Law. The Case Of Americanah, Emanuela Ignatoiu Sora
Conflict And Race In Literature & Law. The Case Of Americanah, Emanuela Ignatoiu Sora
Comparative Woman
In Americanah, the 2013 novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, there is a scene when one of the characters, Laura, speaks of her Ugandan classmate who did not get along with an African-American colleague. Laura is surprised as, for her, all persons of color are similar, with no understanding for their differences in background, personal stories and experiences. The novel depicts and critiques this very categorization of race, which flattens differences, conflating groups and individuals who might share very little, if anything. For a long time, law (with its stipulations, precedents and rulings) has operated in a similar manner, disengaging …

We(Ed) Hold These Truths To Be Self Evident: All Things Cannabis Are Inequitable, Garrett I. Halydier
University of Massachusetts Law Review
Current approaches to social equity in the cannabis industry continue to fail to promote racial equity while simultaneously exacerbating gender, environmental, and other inequities. To better understand the structural dynamics underlying this phenomenon, I first present a multi-disciplinary recounting of not only the racial inequities, but also the stigma, business, research, energy, sex and gender, hemp, and international inequities of the War on Drugs. This serves as the foundation for a compilation of the structural and theoretical reasons for how current social equity policies, whether targeting the cannabis industry, community reinvestment, social justice, or access equity, will only continue to …

Disparities In Suicide And Mental Health Among Student Athletes Of Ethnic And Racial Minorities Compared To Their White Non-Latinx Counterparts, Elizabeth Russo Miss
Undergraduate Research Journal for the Human Sciences
The present paper reviews literature examining trends among suicide, suicidal ideation, and mental illness rates in ethnic and racial marginalized communities’ student-athletes. While the rates of suicide amongst student athlete populations are lower than rates of suicide seen in the general student populations, there remains a discrepancy amongst rates of suicide in student athletes with those identifying with racial and ethnic minority backgrounds endorsing higher rates of suicidal ideation. Data from the existing literature consisted of White, Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Asian/ Pacific Islander, Multiracial, and Native American student-athletes. Studies suggest that ethnic and racially marginalized students are more susceptible to suicide, …
Impact Of Implicit Racial Bias On Students Of African Descent In Predominately White Institutions, Edwin Mathieu
Impact Of Implicit Racial Bias On Students Of African Descent In Predominately White Institutions, Edwin Mathieu
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated how implicit racial bias influences the perceptions of students of African descent in predominately White colleges (PWIs) in the United States (U.S.). The theoretical framework for the study is critical race theory (CRT). CRT challenges racial indifference by exposing how racial advances often come at the cost of promoting or feeding into White self-interests (Patton et al., 2007). This non-experimental quantitative study examined how GPA, the number of credits earned, gender, race, and campus culture impact students of African descent’s perceptions of culturally implicit racial bias. It used Asian, Hispanic, and White students as a comparison group. …

Assessing American Attitudes: Welfare And Redistribution Preferences Over Time By Race, Gender, And Education, Liliana Silver
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Income and wealth inequality in the United States have skyrocketed since the 1970s, making the country increasingly unequal (Ashok et al. 2015; Hout 2021; Lee 2023). Researchers disagree on whether overall support for redistribution in the United States has changed in the last several decades (Ashok et al. 2015; Lee 2023; Pittau et al. 2016) but recent studies suggest the country has seen a significant political realignment based on race and education, influencing support for redistribution (Kitschelt and Rehm 2019). Much of the literature on redistributive attitudes exists in political science or economics and/or explores fewer dependent variables of race, …

Racial/Ethnic Collective Autonomy Restriction And Teacher Fairness: Predictors And Moderators Of Student's Perceptions Of Teacher Support, Adrian Rivera-Rodriguez, Evelyn Mercado
Psychological and Brain Sciences Faculty Publication Series
The link between intrinsic motivation support from teachers (i.e., teacher support), academic motivation, and academic performance is well documented. However, evidence suggests that racial/ethnic minority students are less likely to perceive support from adults at school, compared to White students. The majority of existing research has emphasized the impact that school-level factors have on racial/ethnic minority students' perceptions of teacher support. However, less research has examined whether students' awareness of racial/ethnic inequality at the socio-structural level may also influence perceptions of teacher support. The present study explores this question and examines whether students' perceptions of race/ethnic based collective autonomy restriction …

The third annual EPOCH symposium, a partnership between the Seattle University Law Review and the Black Law Student Association took place in late summer 2023 at the Seattle University School of Law. It was intended to uplift and amplify Black voices and ideas, and those of allies in the legal community. Prompted by the swell of public outcry surrounding ongoing police violence against the Black community, the EPOCH partnership marked a commitment to antiracism imperatives and effectuating change for the Black community. The published symposium in this volume encompasses some, but not all, the ideas and vision detailed in the …

Considering the widespread prevalence of racist content and opinions on social media, there is a pressing need to understand how users react to such content in ways that might lead them to be drawn into echo chambers of racism, hate speech, and potentially even violence. We conducted an online study to investigate how two individual differences—political orientation and motivation to control prejudice (MCP)—may predispose people to accept anti-Black racism expressed in social media messages. Non-Black participants viewed racist and egalitarian mock social media posts and reported how likely they would be to respond favorably and/or engage in supportive social media …

It is common scholarly and popular wisdom that racial quotas are illegal. However, the reality is that since 2020’s racial reckoning, many of the largest companies have been touting specific, albeit voluntary, goals to hire or promote people of color, which this Article refers to as “racial targets.” The Article addresses this phenomenon and shows that companies can defend racial targets as distinct from racial quotas, which involve a rigid number or proportion of opportunities reserved exclusively for minority groups. The political implications of the legal defensibility of racial targets are significant in this moment in American history, where race …

A fundamental launchpad for redeeming American society is to look to the historical and contextual goals of the Second Founding—the Reconstruction Amendments—and grasp the lessons about justice and equality for all by focusing on the principles of institutional antiracism. While our nation should deploy teaching and learning strategies at all levels of the American system of education, legal education must be out front leading the way to incorporate institutional antiracism through critical pedagogy.
This article provides the historical context in which legal education developed in the antebellum and postbellum periods and up to what might be deemed the “Third Founding” …

Identity Formation In The Lebanese-American Christian Diaspora, Matthew Cesar Audi
Honors Projects
Since the late 1800s, people have immigrated to the United states from Lebanon and Syria, and the community’s racial and ethnic position within the United States has been contested ever since. Previous research emphasizes that while people from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are legally classified as “white” on the U.S. Census. However, many people from the region do not identify as white, and they often face discrimination or threats of violence. For people of Arab and Christian backgrounds this is further complicated because they are a part of the majority through their religion, but part of a …
A Phenomenological Approach: How Hopelessness Affects Achievement In The Areas Of Socio-Economic, Criminality, And Educational Success Within The African American Community, Shawn A. Parker
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological study was designed to examine how the concept of hope or lack thereof has an impact on the negative discrepancies in the areas of education, criminal behavior, and socio-economic status among African Americans as it compares to Whites. There may be other ethnicities who have significant inconsistencies as well, but for the sack of this study, the comparisons were primarily among African Americans and Whites. The theory guiding this study is the psychodynamic approach. This approach was guided by Sigmond Freud’s desire to understand human behavior; provided a path to studying the events of the past and present …

A Brief History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints With Emphasis On The Charismatic Roots Of The Race-Based Priesthood Denial, Wayne A. Denton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation provides an overview of the history of race relations and the evolution of authority in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). It traces the early charismatic leadership of Joseph Smith and his liberal racial views, which increased tension between the LDS church and broader American society. After Smith's death, Brigham Young instituted racist policies like slavery in Utah and a priesthood ban for black members to reduce tensions. In the Progressive Era, LDS scholars theologically entrenched the priesthood ban despite their progressive leanings. A push towards correlation and centralized control of doctrine in the twentieth …

Through a lack of Black-centered, Black-empowering policies and strategies (Dumas, 2016), Black people are overlooked in the US public education system. Though this general disregard (and disdain) for Blackness in the education system is found to keep communities segregated and result in higher rates of expulsion and punishment for Black students (Dumas, 2014; Wun, 2016), we know relatively little about how experiences shape identities for Black girls in their schools. For Black girls, and specifically Black mixed race girls, we do know that physical attributes like hair texture and skin color shift the girls’ sense of racial identity (Hunter, 2016) …
