Nature As Privilege: How Environmental Racism Changes The Access To Fresh Air And The Effects On New York City’S Communities, Sarah C. Morrison
Nature As Privilege: How Environmental Racism Changes The Access To Fresh Air And The Effects On New York City’S Communities, Sarah C. Morrison
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper serves to addresses the issue of environmental racism in relation to New York City, and more specifically comparing the South Bronx and Central Brooklyn, often characterized as low-income and high-minority populations with their white counterparts. New York, among other urban centers in the United States serves as an example of environmental racism because of the discrepancy in high air pollution levels in marginalized communities, the subsequent negative health effects (specifically asthma), and the lack of green spaces. The root of this issue is prominent in the history and construction of New York during the 1900s. The construction of …

Protection Through Participation: Crowdsourced Tap Water Quality Monitoring For Enhanced Public Health, Sarah A. Jakositz
Protection Through Participation: Crowdsourced Tap Water Quality Monitoring For Enhanced Public Health, Sarah A. Jakositz
Master's Theses and Capstones
Lead contamination in municipal drinking water is a national public health issue and is generally the result of water contact with leaded distribution piping and on-premise plumbing. As a result, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule requires point of use sampling methods at a small fraction of consumer taps on the public water distribution system. While this approach is practical, it leaves large gaps of consumers without direct monitoring and protection. In response, a novel contest-based crowdsourcing study was conducted to engage the public in monitoring their own water quality at their home taps and study factors …

Equity Assessment For Emerging Transportation Technologies: A Comprehensive Literature Review And Case Study, Yujie Guo, Amy L. Stuart, Xiaopeng Li, Yu Zhang
Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Publications
Emerging transportation technologies (e.g. connected vehicles) and services (e.g. shared mobility) provide efficient, sustainable and cost-effective alternatives to traditional travel modes. However, whether these innovative technologies bring benefits to different population groups in an equal and reasonable manner is still an open question. This report aims to tackle this question and is divided into the following two parts: transportation equity literature review and a case study on bike-sharing systems. The first part of the report comprehensively surveys the literature about methodologies for analyzing transportation equity for traditional and emerging transportation technologies in terms of economy, environment and public health. It …

Science, Advocacy, Policy, Planning: Tools For Advancing Transportation Equity, Garrett S. Mcallister
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
The theme of this portfolio is how different tools and approaches can be used for advancing transportation equity. Broadly defined, transportation equity is about fairness in transportation. There are a number of ways this fairness can be assessed. The most common way to assess transportation equity is by looking at the fairness of outcomes, distributed geographically, socially, or even by mode of transportation. Equity can also be defined by the fairness of processes. The first half of the portfolio illustrates some of the problems with the current transportation system and how it is unhealthy (Piece 1) and unjust (Piece 2). …

Hunger Games: Policies To Address Food Deserts In Rhode Island's Low Income Communities, Jessi Mcneill
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
This policy paper examines the global, health, and social implications of food deserts in the state of Rhode Island. This paper assesses the inception of the food desert phenomenon and draws attention to three policy options for the state. While there is sufficient research on food deserts in large cities like New York and Philadelphia, little information is available regarding the implications of food deserts and policy options available to provide low-income Rhode Islanders with healthy, affordable food. Research methodology consists of site visits and interviews, as well as research courtesy of the 2017 Rhode Island Food Strategy and nonprofit …

The Vested Rights Doctrine: How A Shield Against Injustice Became A Sword For Opportunistic Developers, Steve P. Calandrillo, Chryssa Deliganis, Christina Elles
Articles
In an era of pioneering environmental and land use laws, savvy developers are using the “vested rights” doctrine to circumvent and undermine critical public health, safety, and environmental regulations. This controversy pits two legitimate interests against each other: On the one hand, local governments must have the power to pass land use laws and regulations in the public interest to protect their community’s health, safety, welfare, and environment. On the other, developers who rely on the laws in existence at the time their project is approved should be protected from subsequent changes to the law that could increase transactional costs …

Racial Inequality And The Implementation Of Emergency Management Laws In Economically Distressed Urban Areas, Shawna J. Lee, Amy Krings, Sara Rose, Krista Dover, Jessica Ayoub, Fatima Salman
Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
This study examines the use of emergency management laws as a policy response to fiscal emergencies in urban areas. Focusing on one Midwestern Rust Belt state, we use a mixed methods approach – integrating chronology of legislative history, analysis of Census data, and an ethnographic case study – to examine the dynamics of emer- gency management laws from a social justice perspective. Analysis of Census data showed that emergency man- agement policies disproportionately affected African Americans and poor families. Analysis indicated that in one state, 51% of African American residents and 16.6% of Hispanic or Latinos residents had lived in …

First came the insight that politics was not an outgrowth of organic hierarchy or divine ordination but instead an artifice – an architecture of power planned only by human beings. [...] was the recognition that economic order does not arise from providential design, natural rights to property and contract, or a grammar of cooperation inherent, like language, in the human mind. First is the Anthropocene condition: the massive increase in human impacts on everything from the upper atmosphere to the deep sea and the DNA of the world's species. [...] closely related, is the movement's interest not just in the …
