Individual Differences In Processing Of Garden-Path Sentences: The Role Of Obsessive- Compulsive Personality Traits, Antonio Cardoso
Individual Differences In Processing Of Garden-Path Sentences: The Role Of Obsessive- Compulsive Personality Traits, Antonio Cardoso
Honors Theses
A great deal of previous research has investigated the real-time processing and offline interpretation of garden path (GP) sentences. This work has shown that GP sentences cause substantial processing disruptions, as revealed by regressive eye movements during reading, as well as incorrect answers to comprehension questions. The current study was designed to investigate whether variability in the processing of GP sentences could be explained by individual differences in personality traits, specifically obsessive-compulsive personality traits. In an eyetracking while reading experiment, participants read GP sentences with both a comma manipulation and a verb type manipulation. Results replicated previous findings in that …

Kelly Drogan ’22
Major: Psychology
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Jennifer Van Reet, Psychology
This year, with the help of my faculty advisor, Dr. Jennifer Van Reet, and the Providence College Center for Engaged Learning, I conducted a study evaluating hopefulness in children and college students. I chose to study hope because of an internship experience I had at the Department of Children and Families. I was interested in discovering what variables may be able to increase hope in children, while also looking at the developmental progression of hopefulness over time.
Hope is both the belief that you can achieve your goals, …
A Holistic Approach To Combating Stereotype Threat In Stem Among Elementary Children, Tiffany Berry, Hope Tiboni
A Holistic Approach To Combating Stereotype Threat In Stem Among Elementary Children, Tiffany Berry, Hope Tiboni
Psychology Student Scholarship
Tiffany Berry ’22, Majors: Biology and Psychology
Hope Tiboni, ’22, Majors: Psychology and Health Policy and Management
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Saaid Mendoza, Psychology
Past research has established that concerns about being negatively stereotyped can impact the academic performance of marginalized groups. These stereotype threat effects may be moderated by external factors (i.e., role models, social support) and internal factors (i.e., identity, resilience). We integrate these approaches to promote success within STEM-interested children, particularly young girls. Specifically, we propose a practical toolkit that can be used in elementary schools as a theory-driven holistic intervention for mitigating stereotype threats.
Mosaic: A Lifetime Of Poems, Emma F. Bowen
Mosaic: A Lifetime Of Poems, Emma F. Bowen
Honors Projects
In hopes of providing a clearer picture of the aging process and its effects on our personalities, follow this collection of poems through diary-like entries of individuals navigating their lives from daycare, heartbreak, and loneliness. The impact that development can have on our psychological well-being and brains is fascinating and feels familiar. Why do we see the world so differently when we are young? As we grow older, what is so important that makes us shift how we view ourselves and our environment multiple times? It is often seen that each generation shares like-mindedness throughout their lives – why?
An Analysis Of Appearance-Based Assumptions In Content Creation, Emily Andersen
An Analysis Of Appearance-Based Assumptions In Content Creation, Emily Andersen
Honors Projects
The purpose of this project is to uncover assumptions and stereotypes held against college majors through content creation. Is it natural to stereotype and label people? Is it harmful? Most may think that is true, while others may believe that is being judgemental. Can others tell what major a student is by a first glance or a brief conversation? Is it the way they dress, their star sign, or political beliefs? These are all examples of stereotypes I believe could influence an assumption. What kind of thoughts goes into these stereotypes from a sociological perspective? Answers are discovered through a …

An Exploration Of Groups Dynamics And The Impact Of Unconscious Processes, Phil Hanlon
An Exploration Of Groups Dynamics And The Impact Of Unconscious Processes, Phil Hanlon
Level 3
Despite extensive research on groups, organisations continue to experience problems with them. Is this an inherent feature of the nature of groups? This article aims to provide a practical understanding of the unconscious processes in groups and how these impact on group functioning. It further elaborates some guidelines for managers on optimising team / group performance.
The article interrogates the work of Sigmund Freud regarding his views on how groups function, drawing mainly on his work Group Psychology and Analysis of the Ego (1921).
It asks if a study of Freud’s work can help organisations reconsider the nature of groups, …
We Are More Than Just Spectators: Feminist Psychology Theory Applied To Sports Psychology, Victoria Wypych
We Are More Than Just Spectators: Feminist Psychology Theory Applied To Sports Psychology, Victoria Wypych
Honors Projects in Applied Psychology
This study looks into the differences between females and male athletics. Since the creation of Title IV, equality in sports has developed more; but there is still not an even platform. Due to the 2021 NCAA basketball tournaments, it has become more evident that more work needs to be done to reach equality in the sports world. This study is going to compare the different levels of support in athletics of males and females via a survey questionnaire of athletes. A manipulative scenario will also be sent out regarding scenarios of male and female sports. This portion of the survey …
Let's Hit The Gym: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Student Exercise, Achievement, And Social Anxiety, Angela Lebel
Let's Hit The Gym: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Student Exercise, Achievement, And Social Anxiety, Angela Lebel
Honors Projects in Applied Psychology
An emerging body of literature has documented the positive influence of exercise on student achievement. Human and non-human animal studies have proven that exercise can improve memory, academic stressors, social anxiety, and sleep along with more broad topics such as mental and physical health. With exercise improving memory and academic stressors, this leads to a potential conclusion that exercise could benefit student’s grade point average which will be tested in this study. Exercise is also exhibited to help reduce social anxiety which leads to a potential conclusion that exercise could improve one’s involvement in extracurricular activities because one would have …

Examining The Disproportionate Diagnosis Of Learning Disabilities, Rebecca Reynolds
Honors Projects in Applied Psychology
This thesis examines various factors and intricacies of inequitable diagnoses of learning disabilities, specifically looking at the differences that women and BIPOC students have in their diagnosis journey. Grounded in exploring access services and disability rights/justice both at Bryant University and elsewhere, this thesis investigates the intricacies of social class, societal norms, and cultural effects on learning disability. It compares what the secondary data reports on diagnosis of learning disabilities to the experience of Bryant students. Additionally, it examines gaps found in secondary research.

Abstract. It can be shown that the following qualitative changes in the psyche fully reflect the potential of the student and students: this is an increase in self-awareness; Improvement of self-management processes, growth of intellectual abilities (mental shift, in-depth analysis of the material, identification of patterns, search for broad analogies). The process of teaching students should also be considered from the point of view of the extent to which this education is provided with elements of preparation for the independent acquisition of knowledge. At the same time, self-study is considered a key component of education. Independent reading means the formation …
How Corrective Lens Choices Are Associated With The Self-Esteem Of College Students, Margaret Neenan
How Corrective Lens Choices Are Associated With The Self-Esteem Of College Students, Margaret Neenan
Honors Projects
If you wear glasses or contacts, which one do you wear more often, and why? How Corrective Lens Choices are Associated with the Self-Esteem of College Students is an observational study on 1) how corrective lens choices are associated with the self-esteem of college students, and 2) how do factors such as gender, ethnicity, finances, insurance, recreational and occupational use, or lens options recommended to a patient impact an individual’s choice of corrective lenses. The observational study shows that there is no significant difference in the self-esteem of college students who wore a specific corrective lens more often. However, research …
Reproductive Justice: Sacred Activism In Two Dimensions, Kathleen Dodge
Reproductive Justice: Sacred Activism In Two Dimensions, Kathleen Dodge
Thinking Matters Student Research Symposium
This project explains the value of the Black feminist intersectional theoretical framework that the Reproductive Justice movement utilizes, and places this in conversation with Jungian depth psychology, which offers a powerful and complementary symbolic language with which to understand the deeper potentialities of this movement’s response to reproductive bio-politics of control. Research included a close reading of texts in intersectional theory, reproductive justice, and feminist and racially conscious revisions of the analytical psychology of Carl G. Jung. I contend that the Reproductive Justice Movement, organizing from intersectional locations of the most marginalized, are aiding in Jung’s Individuation Process in the …
What Is Assertiveness?, Mirjana Trifunovic
What Is Assertiveness?, Mirjana Trifunovic
Theses
My main aim is to define assertiveness, to distinguish assertiveness from aggressiveness, and to raise the question of whether we should be assertive. Most articles on assertiveness are from the field of psychology. In psychology, assertiveness is defined as a healthy way of expressing oneself. But what does assertiveness mean? How should we define assertiveness and is assertiveness desirable, or is it closely connected to aggressiveness? Should we say that assertiveness is a part of our character, an innate quality, or an acquired skill? In this thesis, I will define assertiveness and show how to distinguish assertiveness from aggressiveness. Most …
Egyptian Etiquette: A Historical Rebuttal To The Genealogy Of Morals, Noah C. Evans
Egyptian Etiquette: A Historical Rebuttal To The Genealogy Of Morals, Noah C. Evans
Honors College Theses
In his book Genealogy of Morals, German philologist and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche posits an understanding of the origin and development of morality that stood in stark contrast to the common understanding of his day. Rather than presuming the existence of some metaphysical, objective reality to morality, Nietzsche outlines a natural development and evolution to the concepts of "Good," "Bad," and "Evil" throughout a nebulously defined period of history, focusing primarily on the psychological conditions surrounding the advent of morality. Following this, he wrote The Antichrist, in which he provided a far more specific historical framework within which the …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Stress, Burnout, And Depression In The Iecmh Workforce, Thomas Boyer, Jessica Pooter-Rodriguez Ms., Hannah Winston Ms., Diana Morelen Dr.
Appalachian Student Research Forum
A growing trend in the psychological literature has consistently found a strong association between stress, burnout, and depression, especially in populations who are exposed to a high amount of occupational stress. And, while the relationship between stress and burnout has been distinct and strong, the same cannot be said for burnout and depression. Historically, burnout and depression have shared such a strong conceptual relationship that the literature disagreed as to whether they were truly separate mechanisms. However, while the two constructs do present behavioral similarities the underlying mechanisms which direct their presentation are subtly different. Depression is defined as a …

The Negative Relationship Between Religiosity And Substance Use, Meredith A. Jordan, Lauren Ledford, Mary Jo Oliver, Andrea D. Clements
Appalachian Student Research Forum
The negative association between religiosity and substance abuse is well established in previous literature. Scholarly research continues to find support for both intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity functioning as protective factors against substance abuse with intrinsic religiosity’s negative correlation with substance use being more established in literature than extrinsic religiosity. This study focuses on the relationship between college student intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity, measured by the Intrinsic/Extrinsic Religiosity Scale and substance use, measured by the Texas Christian University Drug Screen-5 (TCUDS-5). The Intrinsic/Extrinsic Religiosity Scale and the TCUDS-5 are well established instruments with historically high internal consistency. We hypothesized that there …

Risk And Protective Factors For Depression And Anxiety In Pcos, Baylee Armstrong, Taylor Phillips, Natalie Wilson, Kelsey Braun, Stacey Williams Ph.D
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, PCOS, is an endocrine condition among individuals born with ovaries. Though the condition name refers to the underdeveloped follicles as multiple cysts on the ovary, individuals living with PCOS frequently encounter menstrual irregularity, hirsutism (male-patterned body/facial hair), acne, and obesity. Prior research has noted that PCOS also is associated with psychological outcomes, most notably increased risk for depression and anxiety. However, relative to large amount of medical research on PCOS, few studies have examined these psychological outcomes and their etiology. Work is needed that uncovers the connection between the risks (e. g., stigma, weight bias, and quality …
Exploring The Experiences Of Emerging Adulthood Among Rural Appalachian Students, Daryl Parungao, Rachel L. Miller-Slough
Exploring The Experiences Of Emerging Adulthood Among Rural Appalachian Students, Daryl Parungao, Rachel L. Miller-Slough
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Emerging adulthood is a developmental stage that has risen out of a need to recontextualize the lives of individuals aged 18-29 years old in modern times. Sometimes described as a prolonged period of adolescence, emerging adulthood presents unique challenges and opportunities as individuals launch from adolescence and begin to assume more adult roles. Early research on this developmental period details five themes that commonly prevail the lives of emerging adults: identity exploration, feeling in-between, being self-focused, exploring possibilities, andinstability (Arnett, 2000). Though previous studies suggest that these themes remain fairly consistent despite the heterogeneity of the emerging adult population …
Dehumanization And The Power Hierarchy In Black Mirror’S “Men Against Fire”, Christine Gullic
Dehumanization And The Power Hierarchy In Black Mirror’S “Men Against Fire”, Christine Gullic
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
Charlie Brooker’s popular Netflix series Black Mirror has never failed to reflect society’s shadows, and season three’s “Men Against Fire” carries the torch in revealing that our dependence on technology leads to othering, dehumanization, and a perpetual power struggle. As technology rapidly evolves, its tendrils sink further into the human, organic world, making it increasingly difficult for humans to behave ethically as we gain power. Simultaneously, those at the other end of the spectrum are dehumanized as they are monitored and manipulated through the use of technology and power. The links between “Men Against Fire” and both historical and modern …
Relationship Between Higher Education And Health Insurance Coverage And Healthcare Utilization For Black Or African American Individuals, Emma Revoir
Psychology Student Works
Higher education may decrease mortality due to higher income and health insurance availability (Buckles et al., 2016). Education can increase understanding and utilizing health insurance (Gallo et al., 2020). There is a gap in how this relationship affects racial minorities. This study aims to understand how health insurance is affected by education level for Black or African American individuals.
The Association Between Sibling Relationships And Personality, Rebecca Ramsey
The Association Between Sibling Relationships And Personality, Rebecca Ramsey
Psychology Student Works
Differences in self perception (specifically aggression) was discovered in participants with siblings, and no difference of intelligence, outgoing personalities, creativity, competitiveness and family orientation (Van Volkom, Guerguis, & Kramer, 2017). Sisters were found to have more empathy than the brothers along with higher intimacy, knowledge, and emotional support (Walęcka-Matyja, 2017). There is a gap in my research between sibling jealousy and depression, sibling negativity, and intimacy in young adulthood (Hamwey & Whiteman, 2020). My study examines the similarity of personality to siblings. Some personality traits may include jealousy, outgoingness, competitiveness, and creativity.
How Quality Of Paternal Relationship Impacts Depression Development In Adulthood, Rachel Lane
How Quality Of Paternal Relationship Impacts Depression Development In Adulthood, Rachel Lane
Psychology Student Works
Previous studies show that paternal involvement directly correlates to a decrease in the child’s probability of developing a mental illness (O’Gara, et.al. 2019). Research shows, the more supportive and the more affection a parent gives, the less likely a child is to develop depressive tendencies (Del Barrio, et. al. 2016) There is a gap in investigating whether or not having a loving father postpones the age at which someone is diagnosed with depression. This study provides insight into paternal closeness and the age at which someone is diagnosed with depression.
The Association Between Promiscuity And Marital Satisfaction, Shelby Kate Christopher
The Association Between Promiscuity And Marital Satisfaction, Shelby Kate Christopher
Psychology Student Works
Research has suggested that premarital cohabitation is linked to a heightened risk of divorce and dissatisfaction if it occurs with someone other than the marriage partner (Teachman, 2004). The number of partners is linked to marital dissatisfaction for both men and women (Legkauskas & Stankevičienė, 2008). Involvement in church groups is linked to a 5x increase in likelihood of abstinence (Paul et al, 2000). Previous studies have used small sample sizes with little diversity and few men. However, my research will use a large, diverse sample size with both men and women.
The Association Between Religiosity And Alcohol Use In Adolescents, Daphny Vang
The Association Between Religiosity And Alcohol Use In Adolescents, Daphny Vang
Psychology Student Works
Research has found that the age and strength of religion directly correlate to the level of alcohol consumption(Mason & Windle, 2002). Previous studies show that adult women with stronger religious beliefs consume less alcohol compared to those with weaker religious beliefs (Mattila & et al., 2001). There is a gap in investigating the relationship between religiosity and alcohol use in adolescents. This study provides insight into the relationship between religiosity and alcohol consumption with adolescents.
The Relationship Between Adults Education Level And Their Mental Health Status, Kelsey Bergan
The Relationship Between Adults Education Level And Their Mental Health Status, Kelsey Bergan
Psychology Student Works
Research has shown that those with a higher education are more likely to seek out sources to help them with mental disorders (Ibrahim, et al., 2019; Neimeyer, et al., 2011). Previous studies have found that students with a lower GPA show signs of depression, anxiety and eating disorders (Eisenberg, Globerstein & Hunt, 2009). There is a gap in investigating the relationship between education level and an adult’s mental health experiences. This study will provide insight to the relationship between an adults education level and their mental health.
The Relationship Between Adolescents’ Participation In Religious/Spiritual Activities And Mental Health As An Adult, Tiara Lamb
Psychology Student Works
Many receiving mental health treatment across the U.S. see spirituality and religion as very helpful in supporting their mental state (Oxhandler et al., 2021). How often black Americans attended church in adolescence is related to how as a young adult they could spiritually handle mentally stressing situations (Alexander, 2017). There’s a gap in previous studies because most of them study specific groups rather than using a representative sample of the U.S. In addition, there is a lack of studies investigating the relationship between adolescent religiosity/spirituality and adult mental health. This study uses a representative sample and investigates the association between …
The Association Of Maternal Relationships And Acts Of Violence In Adults, Cameron Shores
The Association Of Maternal Relationships And Acts Of Violence In Adults, Cameron Shores
Psychology Student Works
Through research it has been found that people who do not feel close to their parents are more likely to react with violence (Cano-Lozano et al., 2020). Studies have also shown that people who reported adverse relationships as children, tend to have more violence-related outcomes (Duke, 2010). There is currently a gap in explaining the association between maternal closeness and violent tendencies. This study is meant to help fill that gap and bring cognizance to the relationship between maternal closeness and violence.

How Do I Know What You Know? A Novel Theoretical Account Of Epistemic Inference, Rosie Aboody
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Of the capacities that make us uniquely human—pedagogy, social learning, coop- eration, communication, moral evaluation—all hinge, at least in part, on an under- standing of what others know or believe. Critically, we cannot see mental states: we have access only to the observable behaviors they cause. So, to navigate the social world, we must often infer what others think from observing what they do. While prior work has investigated how children and adults infer preferences, goals, and desires from behavior, little research has investigated how we infer epistemic states (knowledge and beliefs). In this thesis, I expand upon existing accounts …
