The Relationship Of Parent Identification And Perception Of Parent's Sex-Role To Sex Role Orientation, Robert L. Turner Jan 1994

The Relationship Of Parent Identification And Perception Of Parent's Sex-Role To Sex Role Orientation, Robert L. Turner

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the relationship of parent identification and perception of parent sex-role to subjects' sex-role orientation. One hundred male and 100 female subjects were administered two Bem Sex-Role Inventories (BSRI), rating themselves on the first and their same-sex parent on the second. Subjects also completed two Semantic Differential Questionnaires, one for the self and one for the same-sex parent, as a measure of identification. Fifty-five female and 50 male subjects characterized themselves and their same-sex parent as "Traditional" or "Androgynous" using the BSRI, and were retained as the final sample. Subjects were divided into four groups based on their …

Attachment To Care-Giver As Reflected In Early Recollections And Social Interest Of Normal And Conduct Disorder Adolescents, Michael Lee Latta Jan 1994

Attachment To Care-Giver As Reflected In Early Recollections And Social Interest Of Normal And Conduct Disorder Adolescents, Michael Lee Latta

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the degree to which conduct disorder and normal adolescents differ with respect to social interest as assessed by the Personal Trait Value Scale (Crandall, 1975). An attempt was also made to determine whether significant differences exist between groups with respect to manifest content of early recollections as assessed by the Manaster-Perryman Manifest Content Early Recollections Scoring Manual (Manaster-Perryman, 1979). Special attention was given to the manifest content of early recollections regarding early caregiver-child interactions, the subjects' perceived attachment to caregiver, and sense of security. Sixty male subjects participated in this study (N = 60). The conduct disorder …

Early Recollections Of Women In Mathematics, Michael Robert Elmore Jan 1994

Early Recollections Of Women In Mathematics, Michael Robert Elmore

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated whether the content of early recollections distinguishes between women in mathematics and women not directly associated with the study of mathematics. More specifically, this study attempted to determine whether significant differences exist between women math majors/minors and women nonmath majors with respect to manifest content of early recollections as scored employing the Manaster-Perryman Manifest Content Early Recollections Scoring Manual (Manaster & Perryman, 1974). Variables were selected in conformity with known determinants associated with mathematics predilection in women: the roles of mothers and fathers, degree of self-confidence, nonconformity, spatial/visual orientation, school, active or passive tendencies, internal locus of …

Hemispheric Function In Motor Skill Learning., Malcolm Maccoll Fairweather Jan 1994

Hemispheric Function In Motor Skill Learning., Malcolm Maccoll Fairweather

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Neuropsychological research examining hemispheric function has recently revealed important, and previously unrecognized, perceptual-motor processing advantages in the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This research has also highlighted verbal-motor disruption problems in the performance of motor skills that may be predictable given an understanding of hemispheric specialization and function. Applied research examining methodology to optimize brain functioning in the learning of motor skills has ignored this neuropsychological research. Instead, applied research interest has focussed upon an individual difference phenomenon known as hemisphericity, which affects approximately 25% of the population. An individual presenting hemisphericity appears biased toward a left or …

Problem-Solving Versus Traditional Approaches To Assessment And Intervention, Julie K. Hass Nov 1993

Problem-Solving Versus Traditional Approaches To Assessment And Intervention, Julie K. Hass

Student Work

Trends in both regular and special education are moving towards changing current referral, test, and placement into special education practices. The changes are focused on implementing procedures that will decrease the number of students inappropriately placed in special education settings. The results and outcomes of implementing new progressive changes in referral, test, and placement practices are not fully known. The purpose of this research is to compare two approaches of service delivery utilized at Northern Trails Area Education Agency (NTAEA) located in north central Iowa. The two approaches being compared are the traditional approach used in NTAEA in 1990-1992, and …

Searching For Birth Parents: Motive And Experiences Of A Selected Sample Of Adult Adoptees, Susan A. Jacoby Nov 1993

Searching For Birth Parents: Motive And Experiences Of A Selected Sample Of Adult Adoptees, Susan A. Jacoby

Student Work

This study documented the experiences adoptees encounter while searching for their birth parents, and how they were effected by searching. The study also assessed the adoptees support for reviewing laws governing adoption records. Twenty-six adult adoptees were interviewed, their responses recorded and analyzed. Adoptees reported learning of their adoption at an early age. Overall adoptees did not have negative feelings about being adopted and reported positive relationships with their adoptive parents. Adoptees reported a variety of reasons for searching for their birth parents and experienced a number of difficulties while searching. Some of the difficulties were: long distances, legal boundaries, …

Validation Of A Portuguese Form Of Templer's Death Anxiety Scale, James M. Donovan Aug 1993

Validation Of A Portuguese Form Of Templer's Death Anxiety Scale, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

To translate Templer's Death Anxiety Scale into the Brazilian Portuguese Escala de Ansiedade de Morte, linguistic validity was first established by back-translation and calculating bilingual split-half reliability coefficients. Even-numbered items achieved a minimally adequate .59, while the odd-numbered items attained a satisfactory .91. The internal consistency of the Escala (.77) matches that found for the original scale. The construct validity was tested by replicating the interactions of the English form with (1) the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, (2) the Purpose-in-Life Test, and (3) Levenson's measure of locus of control. The Escala performed as expected, save for some difficulty with the locus …

An Assessment Of Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict, Role Frustration, And Job Satisfaction Of Presidents At Selected Private Four-Year Colleges In The Southeastern United States, Gary W. Juhan Aug 1993

An Assessment Of Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict, Role Frustration, And Job Satisfaction Of Presidents At Selected Private Four-Year Colleges In The Southeastern United States, Gary W. Juhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current literature has suggested that the role of the college president has perhaps become too ambiguous, complex and demanding for an individual to perform for an extended period of time. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between perceived role ambiguity, role conflict, role frustration and job satisfaction of selected private college presidents in the Southeastern United States. The method of the study was correlational in design. Using a thirty-seven item questionnaire developed by the author, data were collected from 141 college presidents of institutions within the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The institutions were private …

Acceptability Of Refusal Skills Training Modalities: A Comparison Of Adolescents' Vs. Professionals' Perceptions, Mary M. Poler Aug 1993

Acceptability Of Refusal Skills Training Modalities: A Comparison Of Adolescents' Vs. Professionals' Perceptions, Mary M. Poler

Student Work

Fifty-three sexually active adolescents between 14 and 19 years of age were surveyed to identify general interest in refusal skills training for avoiding unwanted sexual activity. Subjects furnished information regarding preferences for three treatment modalities (pamphlet, behavioral rehearsal, and video modeling) used to deliver refusal skills training. Forty-one health care and school professionals (doctors, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, med tech/health educators, counselors, and psychologists) responded to a similar general interest survey and assessment of treatment modality preferences for provision of refusal skills training. Both adolescents and professionals demonstrated high general interest in refusal skills training as a viable and …

Conceptualizing The Youthful Male Sex Offender: A Meta-Analytic Examination Of Offender Characteristics By Offense Type, Roger B. Graves May 1993

Conceptualizing The Youthful Male Sex Offender: A Meta-Analytic Examination Of Offender Characteristics By Offense Type, Roger B. Graves

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A review of the literature demonstrates that, to date, no concerted effort has been made to conceptualize and develop typologies for youthful male sex offenders on the basis of offense type. Such typologies are deemed important to the understanding of possible developmental antecedents for sexual offending, as well as to the development of theory-driven, empirically based interventions and preventions. This study attempts to begin the conceptualization process through a meta-analytic examination of 140 research samples that provide data on over 16,000 individuals who have committed sexual offenses as youth. Three subtypes of offenders are identified on the basis of offense …

Organizational Culture: How Changes Impact Attitudes Toward Job Satisfaction, R. M. Browder May 1993

Organizational Culture: How Changes Impact Attitudes Toward Job Satisfaction, R. M. Browder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine how a shift in elements of organizational culture impacted attitudes toward job satisfaction in a medium-sized, consumer-owned electric utility over a period of 13 years. The unit of analysis was a municipal utility distributing electrical energy to approximately 27,000 customers. Data collection included the Science Research Associate Employee Inventory, a review of the organization's documents, and a subjective Job Satisfaction Questionnaire. A one-tailed z-test was performed to test whether or not the proportion of employees answering favorable in one survey was greater than the proportion answering favorable in the other survey. It …

The Impact Of Maltreatment On Children's Social Problem-Solving Abilities, Susan Kaye Wilson Jan 1993

The Impact Of Maltreatment On Children's Social Problem-Solving Abilities, Susan Kaye Wilson

Digitized Theses

Social problem solving is generally thought to involve five sequential steps. These steps include encoding, interpretation, response search, response evaluation, and response selection. Acquiring social problem solving skills is a critical aspect of normal child development. These skills are necessary for effective interpersonal interactions with the peers and adults in a child's environment. Family interactions are thought to play a central role in the development of children's social problem solving abilities. In families where the parent-child relationship is extremely dysfunctional, as in cases of maltreatment, the social problem solving abilities of children would then be expected to show some impairment. …

A Behavioural Genetic Analysis Of Personality, Personality Disorder, The Environment, And The Search For Sources Of Nonshared Environmental Influences, Kerry Leslie Jang Jan 1993

A Behavioural Genetic Analysis Of Personality, Personality Disorder, The Environment, And The Search For Sources Of Nonshared Environmental Influences, Kerry Leslie Jang

Digitized Theses

A behaviour genetic analysis of personality, liability to personality disorder, and the general environment of siblings was conducted using a classic twin study design. A sample of 138 same-sex young adult twin pairs (89 monozygotic pairs, 49 dizygotic pairs) was used to estimate trait variance attributable to direct gene action (h{dollar}\sp2\sb{lcub}\rm A{rcub}{dollar}), shared environmental experiences (c{dollar}\sp2{dollar}), and nonshared environmental experiences (e{dollar}\sp2{dollar}). Paralleling previously published results, model-fitting heritability analyses of the Personality Research Form (PRF; Jackson, 1986), and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, (MMPI, Hathaway & McKinley, 1983) showed that additive genetic and nonshared environmental factors could satisfactorily account for the …

Multiple Maltreatment, Attribution Of Blame, And Adjustment Among Adolescents, Robin A. Mcgee Jan 1993

Multiple Maltreatment, Attribution Of Blame, And Adjustment Among Adolescents, Robin A. Mcgee

Digitized Theses

The present study had two purposes. First, it examined the combined and unique contribution of five maltreatment types to variance in adolescent adjustment (i.e., physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect and exposure to family violence). In accordance with contemporary social learning theory (social cognitive theory), it was hypothesized that aggressive forms of maltreatment would predict externalizing problems, particularly for boys, whereas nonaggressive maltreatment would predict internalizing problems. Second, the study examined the predictive utility of blame attributions for maltreatment. Integrating the writings of several theorists regarding blame attribution, it was predicted that self-blame would mediate or moderate internalizing problems, …

Picture-Word Differences In Memory Comparisons Involving Colour, Deborah Joan Stuart Jan 1993

Picture-Word Differences In Memory Comparisons Involving Colour, Deborah Joan Stuart

Digitized Theses

Picture-word differences in mental comparisons involving object colour were investigated. On each trial of Experiment 1, a colour was tachistoscopically presented beside either an uncoloured line drawing of an object or the object's name. Subjects indicated whether or not the colour differed from the object's real-life colour. The categorical structure of colour concepts was operationalized by using normative data so that the presented colours best exemplified basic and boundary (e.g., greenish blue) colour terms and were either from the same colour name category as the real-life colour of the object or from a different category. Also, perceptual distance between the …

An Examination Of The Persistence Of Kindling, A Model For Neural Plasticity, Zoe Dennison Jan 1993

An Examination Of The Persistence Of Kindling, A Model For Neural Plasticity, Zoe Dennison

Digitized Theses

The primary purpose of the experiments discussed here was to discover whether kindling is a permanent and stable state or a slowly eroding persistent state. In addition, questions concerning the relationship between retention and seizure generalization, site of stimulation, and stimulus characteristics were addressed. Experiment One results showed that a large part of the kindling effect was retained over the interval, but there was also a consistent degree of fallback seen when comparing the kindling manifestations just before the interval with those exhibited on the first rekindling session. The retention of the kindling effect was not dependent on the animal …

The Consequences Of Low Birthweight, Ann L. Robson Jan 1993

The Consequences Of Low Birthweight, Ann L. Robson

Digitized Theses

An extensive literature investigating the consequences of low birthweight for childhood development has focused on group differences and the prediction of global cognitive outcomes. The purpose of this thesis was to identify factors that predict specific childhood outcomes and to consider explanatory models of the role of early medical risk for childhood language, motor and attention outcomes. Ninety low birthweight children participating in a prospective longitudinal study were assessed at {dollar}5{lcub}1\over2{rcub}{dollar} years of age. Although there were no consistent differences between within-sample medical risk subgroups on the childhood outcome measures, regression analyses demonstrated that both early medical risk and environmental …
