Persistent Oral Dyskinesias Induced By Long-Term Haloperidol Treatment Is Dissociated From Changes In Neostriatal B(Max) And Mrna Content For Dopamine D(2) Receptors, Nuoyu Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to the presumed associations of dopamine (DA) receptor supersensitivity phenomena in both long-term neuroleptic-treated tardive dyskinetic rats and neonatal 6-hydroxydopamine (n6-OHDA)-lesioned rats, we studied the influence of haloperidol on n6-OHDA-lesioned rats. At 3 days after birth rats received 6-OHDA-HBr (200 $\mu$g, bilateral intracerebroventricularly; desipramine pretreatment, 20 mg/kg, 1h) or vehicle. Two months later haloperidol (1.5/kg/day $\times$ 2 days/week for 4 weeks, then 1.5 mg/kg/day, every day for 10 months) was added to the drinking water. Spontaneous oral activity of intact and n6-OHDA-lesioned rats receiving haloperidol was reached and maintained at significantly higher levels after 15 weeks of haloperidol treatment. …

Assessing The Need For A Formal Training Program Concerning Shoplifter Apprehension, April Lynn Hicks Apr 1995

Assessing The Need For A Formal Training Program Concerning Shoplifter Apprehension, April Lynn Hicks

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The present study was conducted to determine if supervisors and subordinates perceived a need for a formal training program on apprehending shoplifters. The study also determined whether supervisors perceived a greater or lesser need for a formal training program than did subordinates. Twenty supervisors and 70 subordinates from four retail locations were administered a Shoplifting Awareness Survey. It was found that both supervisors and subordinates perceived a need for a formal training program. The data revealed that supervisors perceived the need for a training program to be as strong as the need perceived by subordinates. Subordinates overwhelmingly indicated that they …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify whether the type of previous extracurricular leadership experiences of secondary school assistant principals was related to their current role as secondary school assistant principals. In particular, the study examined whether secondary school assistant principals were more likely to have athletic rather than non-athletic extracurricular activities as part of their background leadership experiences. In addition, type of background leadership experience was examined for relationship to a number of sociodemographic factors including principals' ages, number of years in the field of education, number of years as administrators, gender, and grade configuration of the school. …

Expectations Of Family Physicians Perceptions Of The Doctor And Patient, Mary Eva Farrar Jan 1995

Expectations Of Family Physicians Perceptions Of The Doctor And Patient, Mary Eva Farrar

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This study investigated patient expectations by distributing surveys to family physicians and patients of family physicians. Both subject groups were given the same survey with the exception of demographic questions. Physicians were instructed. to answer the items as they felt their patients would, while the patients were instructed to answer the items with regard to family physicians in general. Comparisons were made between the patients' and physicians' responses and between the responses of demographic groups within the patient sample. Significant differences were found to occur between the patients' and physicians' responses and between the different age groups and different genders …

Infants' Use Of Spatial Co-Location In A Cross-Modal Perception Task, Kimberley Diane Fenwick Jan 1995

Infants' Use Of Spatial Co-Location In A Cross-Modal Perception Task, Kimberley Diane Fenwick

Digitized Theses

The role of spatial co-location between sight and sound in infants' cross-modal learning was examined. In Experiments 1 and 2, 4- and 6-month-old infants were familiarized with toys and an accompanying soundtrack using a cross-modal learning paradigm. Across conditions, spatial congruity between sight and sound was varied so that the sound was: (1) co-located with one toy (40 cm from midline); (2) 20 cm to the far side of one toy toward midline; (3) 20 cm to the far side of one toy opposite midline; and (4) 60 cm to the far side of one toy opposite midline. In Experiment …

The Dimensionality Of Managerial Third-Party Interventions In Conflict Among Subordinates And Their Relationship With Desired Outcomes, Patrick Gregory Irving Jan 1995

The Dimensionality Of Managerial Third-Party Interventions In Conflict Among Subordinates And Their Relationship With Desired Outcomes, Patrick Gregory Irving

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to conduct preliminary research designed to move toward the development of a prescriptive model of managerial third-party intervention in conflicts between subordinates. Similarities have been noted between Sheppard's (1984) recommendations for the development of such a model and the Vroom-Yetton model of managerial decision making (Vroom & Jago, 1988: Vroom & Yetton, 1973).;Two studies were conducted that examined aspects of Sheppard's recommendations. Study 1 was designed to examine the underlying dimensionality of a set of 25 conflict intervention strategies derived from the literature. Participants were asked to rate the similarity-dissimilarity of pairs of strategies. …

An Examination Of Whether Irony And Sarcasm Are Different Terms For The Same Psychological Construct, Christopher James Lee Jan 1995

An Examination Of Whether Irony And Sarcasm Are Different Terms For The Same Psychological Construct, Christopher James Lee

Digitized Theses

Researchers have studied counterfactual statements, such as "There's not a cloud in the sky!" uttered during a violent thunderstorm, both as instances of irony (Jorgensen, Miller & Sperber, 1984; Kreuz & Glucksberg, 1989; Katz & Lee, 1993) and as instances of sarcasm (Gibbs, 1986; Kreuz & Glucksberg, 1989). It is not surprising that some terms are used inconsistently in a young field of investigation such as the psycholinguistics of irony and sarcasm. However. the inconsistent use of the terms irony and sarcasm across different empirical studies is problematic when research participants are asked to judge whether or not counterfactual statements …

Social Rank And Foraging Behavior In Rats: Effects Of Food Size, Density And Distribution, Maria Phelps Jan 1995

Social Rank And Foraging Behavior In Rats: Effects Of Food Size, Density And Distribution, Maria Phelps

Digitized Theses

A number of field studies, conducted with birds, have found that dominant birds aggress against subordinate birds to attain priority of access to food. However, the level of aggression exhibited by dominant birds varied in accord with a cost-benefit analysis of the physical properties and spatial organization of the resource base. When the costs of aggression exceeded the benefits gained from resource defense, dominant birds decreased the level of aggression. Because rats also forage in groups and form functional social hierarchies, it was predicted that dominant rats, like dominant birds, would decrease aggression as a function of three resource attributes. …

The Role Of Literal Meaning In Proverb Comprehension, Nigel E. Turner Jan 1995

The Role Of Literal Meaning In Proverb Comprehension, Nigel E. Turner

Digitized Theses

According to the 'Standard Pragmatic Model of Language', a person initially attempts to understand figurative sentences such as metaphors and proverbs in terms of their literal meaning and only processes the figurative meaning when the literal meaning is found inadequate. Experimental studies have failed to support this model; however, many of these studies confounded literalness with conventionality. Furthermore, the role of literal meaning during figurative language comprehension remains unresolved. The purpose of this thesis is to conduct a more valid test of the Standard Pragmatic Model, and to determine the role of literal meaning during proverb comprehension. In the first …

Maternal Depression, Perceptions, Contextual Stress, And Parenting, Christine Marie-Antoinette Wekerle Jan 1995

Maternal Depression, Perceptions, Contextual Stress, And Parenting, Christine Marie-Antoinette Wekerle

Digitized Theses

The relationship between maternal depression and parenting was explored in three distinct ways: (1) the direct effect of maternal depression, as it is measured proximally and distally to parenting, (2) the moderation of proximal and distal maternal depression by contextual stress, and (3) the mediation of proximal and distal maternal depression by maternal perceptions of child problem behaviour. Two aspects of maternal behaviour were examined: aversive parenting (negative control strategies, negative affect, lack of positive control strategies) and positive affect (positive affect and affection).;A community sample of 95 mother-child dyads participated in 12, 1-hr in-home behavioural observations. Also, mothers completed …

Self-Concept Dimensions Associated With Eating Disturbance, Sandra Ann Yuen Jan 1995

Self-Concept Dimensions Associated With Eating Disturbance, Sandra Ann Yuen

Digitized Theses

The present thesis provided a detailed examination of the self-concept variables associated with eating disturbance. Two distinct self-concept variables, namely, the content and evaluative dimensions of self, were evaluated in relation to global measures of bulimia nervosa. These self-concept dimensions were further examined in relation to the eating pathology and general maladjustment features of bulimia, including the behavioural, motivational, and cognitive-affective components of eating disturbance.;Study 1 examined the actual and ideal self-concept content dimensions and the self-certainty and attribute importance evaluative self-dimensions, across the domains of body image, depressive personality, sociability, and social roles. Individuals reporting higher levels of bulimia …

Personality-Oriented Job Analysis, Maryann Frances Fraboni Jan 1995

Personality-Oriented Job Analysis, Maryann Frances Fraboni

Digitized Theses

The purpose of the present research was to develop a personality-oriented job analysis measure that could be used to identify non-cognitive person attitudes relevant to a given job. One application of this new job analysis measure could be to use it within a person-job (P-J) fit predictive framework.;Three studies were conducted. The first study was aimed at testing an initial item pool developed for the personality-oriented job analysis measure and selecting the best items for each scale. The job analysis measure was constructed to assess (a) 15 personality traits measured by the Jackson Personality Inventory (Jackson, 1994) and (b) 12 …

The Quality Of Mother-Infant Interactions In Families At Risk For Maladaptive Parenting, Anne Krupka Jan 1995

The Quality Of Mother-Infant Interactions In Families At Risk For Maladaptive Parenting, Anne Krupka

Digitized Theses

Two related studies of mother-infant interactions during the first year were carried out. In Study 1, the process of attachment was examined from a developmental psychopathology perspective. In Study 2, an intervention program based on attachment theory was evaluated. The findings revealed a possible pathway to insecure attachment relationships, and provided a rationale for theory-based early prevention.;Study 1 was cross-sectional and longitudinal with 68 high-risk mother-infant dyads (mean maternal age, 17.9 years). A multimethod approach including home observations, questionnaires, interviews, and coding of key episodes, was used to measure cognitive and socioemotional characteristics of the infants and different aspects of …

Depression And Vulnerability: The Role Of Mood And Depression History On Cognitive Processing, Scott Bradley Mccabe Jan 1995

Depression And Vulnerability: The Role Of Mood And Depression History On Cognitive Processing, Scott Bradley Mccabe

Digitized Theses

Cognitive theorists hypothesize the existence of a causal cognitive vulnerability for depression that exists as either a continuously observable trait-like difference (i.e., the main-effects model) or a latent factor observable only in interaction with life events or mood (i.e., the interaction effects model). The current investigation examined the main-effects model and one form of the interaction-effects model that emphasizes current mood as the activator of latent cognitive vulnerability, the Differential Activation Hypothesis (DAH). When primed by sad mood, vulnerable individuals purportedly process environmental information in a manner similar to currently depressed individuals, making them more vulnerable for depression.;Studies of cognition …

Traits, Situations, And Managerial Behaviour: Test Of A Trait Activation Hypothesis, Robert Preston Tett Jan 1995

Traits, Situations, And Managerial Behaviour: Test Of A Trait Activation Hypothesis, Robert Preston Tett

Digitized Theses

Results supporting the predictive validity of assessment centres (e.g., Gaugler, Rosenthal, Thornton & Bentson, 1987) are at odds with widely reported findings that behavioural consistency among assessment centre exercises is low (e.g., Sackett & Dreher, 1982). Lack of behavioural consistency raises doubts as to how assessment centres work. Drawing from principles of person-situation interactionism, a trait activation hypothesis is proposed to help explain the conflicting findings and direct development of valid simulation exercises. The hypothesis holds that the behavioural expression of a trait requires arousal of that trait by trait-relevant situational cues. Cross-situational consistency in behaviour is thereby conceived to …

The Effects Of Preadministration Of Nmda Antagonists On Kindling With Carbachol, Deborah Michelle Saucier Jan 1995

The Effects Of Preadministration Of Nmda Antagonists On Kindling With Carbachol, Deborah Michelle Saucier

Digitized Theses

This thesis evaluated the hypothesis that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor activity is essential for the development of kindling and/or the maintenance of the kindled state in male hooded rats. Kindling was produced by the infusion of carbachol, a muscarinic cholinergic agonist, directly into either the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala or the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. The infusions of carbachol took place over 70 seconds and were given every 2 days. At a previously determined time before the infusion of carbachol, either APV (DL-aminophosphonovaleric acid, infused into the site of recording) or NPC 17742 (2R,4R,2S-(2-amino-4,5(cyclohexyl)-7-phosphonoheptanoic acid, i.p.) was given. Both …

Lawyer Distress: Alcohol-Related Problems And Other Psychological Concerns Among A Sample Of Practicing Lawyers, Connie J.A. Beck, Bruce D. Sales, G. Andrew H. Benjamin Jan 1995

Lawyer Distress: Alcohol-Related Problems And Other Psychological Concerns Among A Sample Of Practicing Lawyers, Connie J.A. Beck, Bruce D. Sales, G. Andrew H. Benjamin

Journal of Law and Health

The findings of the research reported in this study, in conjunction with earlier studies, suggest that the professional and the personal well-being of lawyers is in serious jeopardy. Lawyers are working more, reducing vacation time, spending less time with family members, are prone to alcohol abuse, and face high levels of psychological distress. The combination of elements suggests an impending crisis for lawyers' family lives. Although the data are not sufficient to suggest that psychological distress has detrimentally affected the lawyers' ability to practice competently, the warning signs are present. Further empirical study may well reveal that lawyer distress is …

Differentiating Between Delay Dependent And Delay Independent Deficits Following Medial Thalamic Lesions And Prefrontal Cortical Lesions In The Rat, Alexander Alden Stevens Jan 1995

Differentiating Between Delay Dependent And Delay Independent Deficits Following Medial Thalamic Lesions And Prefrontal Cortical Lesions In The Rat, Alexander Alden Stevens

Doctoral Dissertations

Twenty-four male rats were pretrained on a two-choice, auditory match to position (AMTP) task and randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: radio-frequency lesions of either the medial wall (MW) of prefrontal cortex; lesions of the lateral internal medullary lamina site (LIML) of thalamus; or sham surgical control (CON).

Both lesion groups exhibited significant impairment on initial post-surgical testing of discrimination trials in the AMTP task. However, the MW group showed partial recovery with extensive retraining. In contrast, the LIML lesion group remained impaired throughout post-surgical discrimination testing. Neither the MW or the LIML group showed signs of more …

The Nation-State And Its Ideology: A Study Of School Children's Views Of Nationalism, Politics, And Enmity, Linda June Olson Jan 1995

The Nation-State And Its Ideology: A Study Of School Children's Views Of Nationalism, Politics, And Enmity, Linda June Olson

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the reproduction and ideological legitimization of the nation-state in the eyes of successive generations. There are two components to this study. The first is a socio-historical analysis of the formation of nation-state ideology, a formation which seems to necessitate creation of "in-groups" and "out-groups." It is a socio-historical analysis of victimization, of the tendency to justify colonialism, expansionism, imperialism, and brutality to outsiders.

The second component of this study is concerned with how the ideology of the nation-state regarding nationalism, patriotism, and especially classification of enemy groups, is reproduced and legitimized for future generations. For this purpose, …

Molar And Local Effects Of The Fixed-Ratio Changeover Requirement On Choice, Changeovers, And Visits: A Parametric Examination Of The Fixed-Ratio Changeover Requirement, Michael B. Ehlert Jan 1995

Molar And Local Effects Of The Fixed-Ratio Changeover Requirement On Choice, Changeovers, And Visits: A Parametric Examination Of The Fixed-Ratio Changeover Requirement, Michael B. Ehlert

Doctoral Dissertations

The distribution of behavior by organisms in choice situations is of long-standing interest to psychologists. The generalized matching relation accurately predicts choice between concurrent variable-interval schedules of reinforcement. Researchers have assumed, on weak grounds, that the effect of the changeover requirement on sensitivity to reinforcement--the exponent in the generalized matching equation--was consistent. This experiment considered the effects of the changeover requirement by parametrically manipulating the fixed-ratio schedule required to switch alternatives. Pigeons pecked either of two side-response keys in a standard three-key operant chamber for food, delivered according to independent variable-interval schedules. No changeover delay was used, instead completion of …

Temporal Context And Choice, Randolph Carey Grace Jan 1995

Temporal Context And Choice, Randolph Carey Grace

Doctoral Dissertations

An extension of the generalized matching law is proposed as a model for choice in concurrent chains. The contextual choice model (CCM) assumes that effects of temporal context on choice are determined by the relative times spent in the terminal and initial links (Tt/Ti), and that terminal-link value is independent of temporal context. CCM gives an excellent description of a wide range of archival data, and because it simplifies to the generalized matching law when terminal-link duration is zero, provides a quantitative integration of concurrent chains and concurrent schedules. A series of experiments with pigeons as subjects is described to …

Social Skills In Mentally Retarded Children With Symptoms Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder., Debra Anne Benavidez Jan 1995

Social Skills In Mentally Retarded Children With Symptoms Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder., Debra Anne Benavidez

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

One hundred forty-five boys ages 6 to 11 were administered the Social Skills Rating System and the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters. Subjects were divided into the following groups based on IQ, adaptive behavior, and score on a checklist of ADHD symptoms: normal IQ comparison, normal IQ high-activity-level, normal IQ medicated, mentally retarded comparison, mentally retarded high-activity-level, and mentally retarded medicated. For both normal IQ and mentally retarded children, high-activity-level resulted in higher levels of negative social behavior. Both groups of high-activity level subjects also scored lower on classroom-related social behaviors. Medicated normal IQ subjects displayed social behavior …

Equity Sensitivity: Scale Development And Validation., Kerry Shaun Sauley Jan 1995

Equity Sensitivity: Scale Development And Validation., Kerry Shaun Sauley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Equity Sensitivity Instrument (Huseman, Hatfield, and Miles, 1985) has been the primary measure used in equity sensitivity research to date. It appears to suffer from content deficiency and an inappropriate scoring procedure. Because of these problems, this dissertation constructed a new measure, based on systematic item development procedures, that provided thorough coverage of the equity sensitivity construct. Development of the new measure was based on Huseman, Hatfield, & Miles' (1987) theory of equity sensitivity. Items for the new measure were developed using the traditional approach of developing items that directly inquire about a person's equity sensitivity and a second …

The Effect Of Life Stage Experience And Social Cognitive Reasoning On Adult Gender Role Orientation: A Multidimensional Approach., Lynda Suhrer-Roussel Jan 1995

The Effect Of Life Stage Experience And Social Cognitive Reasoning On Adult Gender Role Orientation: A Multidimensional Approach., Lynda Suhrer-Roussel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study adds to the literature on adult gender role by extending adult gender role orientation beyond increases and/or decreases on gender related personality attributes, in particular increases in self-rated Masculine and Feminine ratings. Gender role orientation was examined along three dimensions: gender-related personality attributes of self, attitudes toward gender role issues, and gender-related attributes of others in social contexts. Life stage experience and social cognitive functioning influences on gender role orientation were examined. The participants were 240 individuals from five life stages: Life stage 1--single, never married; Life stage 2--married individuals with no children; Life stage 3--individuals with children …

Reducing Burden And Distress In Caregivers Of Dementia Patients., Christopher David Sletten Jan 1995

Reducing Burden And Distress In Caregivers Of Dementia Patients., Christopher David Sletten

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As the prevalence and diagnosis of dementia have become more clearly delineated, there has been an increasing focus on the consequences of dementia on the family members that care for these individuals. Much of the attention has focused on who provides care and what impact that caregiving has on them. It has been well documented that the patient's family is responsible for much of the caregiving. These caregivers often experience both a physical and psychological impact from their role. Because of these negative consequences, several studies have investigated interventions designed to reduce caregiver distress. Most of these studies have incorporated …
