Psychopathology And Creativity Among Creative And Non-Creative Professions, Victor Kwan Oct 2016

Psychopathology And Creativity Among Creative And Non-Creative Professions, Victor Kwan

Master's Theses

The mad genius debate has been a topic that has been discussed in both popular culture and academic discourse. The current study sought to replicate previous findings that linked psychopathology to creativity. A total of 165 biographies of eminent professionals (artists, scientists, athletes) were rated on 19 mental disorders using a three point scale of not present (0), probable (1), and present (2) for potential symptoms. Athletes served as an eminent but not creative comparison group in order to discern whether fame, independent of creativity, was associated with psychopathology. Comparison of proportion analyses were conducted to identify differences of proportion …

Human Creativity As A Vehicle For Societal Change: Can Social Action Through Art And Music Drive Positive Societal Change In Jordan?, Marina Qutab

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This case study addresses a gap in the research on society and culture as it examines the relationship between social action through human creativity and positive societal change in Jordan. This relationship was studied through the following methods: six formal interviews with three Musicians, one Artist, one Organizational Behavior and Work Psychologist, and one Cognition and Didactics Researcher; one informal interview with a Jordanian taxi driver; and 30 oral surveys provided to students at The University of Jordan. The researcher’s main goal was to investigate how human creativity expressed through music and the arts can address current pressing environmental and …

The Role Of Psychological States In Predicting Work Engagement: A Test Of Kahn's Model, Taylor Gatti Oct 2016

The Role Of Psychological States In Predicting Work Engagement: A Test Of Kahn's Model, Taylor Gatti

Master's Theses

Researchers have consistently found engagement to be linked to positive individual and organizational outcomes such as job satisfaction, job performance, customer satisfaction, and productivity. Although task characteristics, transformational leadership, and core self-evaluations have been found to be important determinants of engagement, the mechanisms of why they are related to engagement are not well understood. Kahn (1990) argues that individuals become engaged through three psychological states: meaningfulness, safety, and availability. Using Kahn’s theory, the present study was conducted to test whether task characteristics, transformational leadership, and core self-evaluations were related to engagement through its respective psychological state. Data were collected from …

The Mediating Role Of Psychological Empowerment On The Relationship Between Job And Personal Resources And Employee Engagement, Ian Mcallister Oct 2016

The Mediating Role Of Psychological Empowerment On The Relationship Between Job And Personal Resources And Employee Engagement, Ian Mcallister

Master's Theses

Employee engagement is one of the most researched topics in the field of industrial and organizational psychology, mainly because it has been shown to be linked to many positive individual and organizational outcomes. Although past research has consistently shown that job and personal resources are related to employee engagement, little attention has been paid to understand the underlying mechanisms of such relationships. The present study hypothesized that psychological empowerment would be a mediator between job and personal resources (i.e. supervisor support, opportunities for growth, and core self-evaluations) and employee engagement. Using survey response data from 165 employees throughout several industries, …

Moral Courage In Indigent Defense, Tigran W. Eldred Oct 2016

Moral Courage In Indigent Defense, Tigran W. Eldred

Faculty Scholarship

In this essay, I take a different perspective, one that focuses on why people are able to act ethically despite pressures to do otherwise. Social science has convincingly demonstrated that the power of the situation can exert significant influence over individual behavior, thus undermining the claim that only “bad” people engage in unethical conduct.4 Yet, we know that there are individual differences to how people respond to ethical dilemmas, which raises a core question: why do some individuals act more ethically than others, even in similar situations?

To explore this question, I focus on a familiar domain from my …

Cognitive And Affective Aspects Of Personality And Academic Procrastination: The Role Of Personal Agency, Flow, And Executive Function, Marc Graff Sep 2016

Cognitive And Affective Aspects Of Personality And Academic Procrastination: The Role Of Personal Agency, Flow, And Executive Function, Marc Graff

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Academic procrastination is a prevalent issue that affects school-related and other experiences of many students, with some studies identifying as many as a third of college students sampled as‘severe’ procrastinators. This study investigated some of the factors previous studies have identified as potential contributors to procrastinating in the academic arena. In defining procrastination as a self-regulation issue, it is proposed that distinct executive function processes play a role in one’s efforts at academic task engagement and completion and resisting the tendency to procrastinate on these tasks. It is also proposed that the frequency with which one experiences ‘flow’, a state …

Managing A Large Scale Project: Using Strengthsfinder In The Website Redesign, Laura Edwards, Cristina Tofan Sep 2016

Managing A Large Scale Project: Using Strengthsfinder In The Website Redesign, Laura Edwards, Cristina Tofan

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

After doing a library-wide StrengthsFinder assessment that highlighted the strengths of its individuals, EKU Libraries decided to put this strategy into practice by applying it to one of the most complex projects in the life of an academic library: the website redesign. This decentralized approach allowed project managers to align strengths-based teams with phases of the redesign that would most benefit from that team’s unique strengths.

The Pribram – Bohm Hypothesis Part Ii: The Physiology Of Consciousness, Shelli R. Joye Sep 2016

The Pribram – Bohm Hypothesis Part Ii: The Physiology Of Consciousness, Shelli R. Joye

CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century

A physiology of consciousness is elaborated, based upon implications of the Pribram-Bohm hypothesis (developed in Part I of this series). The model presented here is in sharp contrast to the prevailing conviction among neuroscientists that consciousness will eventually be discovered to be a physiological epiphenomenon of neuronal electrical impulses firing in the brain. In contrast, the Pribram-Bohm theory holds that consciousness, inherent in what Bohm views cosmologically as “the Whole,” manifests as a dynamic conscious energy resonance bridging the explicate space-time domain with the nonlocal, transcendent flux domain termed the “implicate order.” Presented in Part I, the Pribram-Bohm hypothesis posits …

Can You Remember? Factors Predicting Memory Accuracy In Eyewitnesses, Jamie Rich, Wind Goodfriend Sep 2016

Can You Remember? Factors Predicting Memory Accuracy In Eyewitnesses, Jamie Rich, Wind Goodfriend

Modern Psychological Studies

People become witnesses to crimes every day. This study further investigated witness variables such as sex and age, as well as the personality trait conscientiousness, in relation to one’s ability to accurately remember a fictional crime scene. An experimental manipulation was also utilized; participants read an article claiming that either men or women were three times better at memory (a self-fulfilling prophecy effect). Then, they watched a short video of a crime and were asked to recall details. As expected, age and memory accuracy were negatively correlated (p < .001) and conscientiousness was positively correlated with memory accuracy (p = .046). There were no significant differences found among participants based on experimental conditions (p = .700), but a main effect of participant sex was marginally significant (p = .065), with women having slightly better memories than men. Studying how individual traits relate to memory accuracy can help determine factors that influence eyewitness scenarios and whether juries should rely on eyewitnesses. Implications, limitations, and future research are discussed.

She Asked For It: Statistics And Predictors Of Rape Myth Acceptance, Patrice Crall, Wind Goodfriend Sep 2016

She Asked For It: Statistics And Predictors Of Rape Myth Acceptance, Patrice Crall, Wind Goodfriend

Modern Psychological Studies

Where rape exists, there are people who believe in cultural myths about rape causes and victims. Acceptance of these rape myths increases and decreases based on many predictors; the present study investigated how rape myth acceptance varied in different populations on the campus of a small, private, liberal arts university. Although overall rape myth acceptance on campus was relatively low, analyses revealed that female participant sex, knowing a victim, and being able to identify contextual sexual assaults were predictive of lower rape myth acceptance. Additional hypotheses and research questions were tested but showed non-significant results. The findings of this study …

Infant Mother And Father Attachment Predict Child Behavior At 24 Months, Haemi Nam, Marla Beyer Sep 2016

Infant Mother And Father Attachment Predict Child Behavior At 24 Months, Haemi Nam, Marla Beyer

Modern Psychological Studies

A large body of evidence indicates that secure infant-mother attachment significantly predicts optimal socialemotional development; however, fathers’ role in infancy has received less attention. Fathers’ role may be especially critical in families who are at higher risk due to fathers’ alcohol abuse/dependence and associated risks. We hypothesized that infants who are securely attached to both parents in the first year (as measured by the Strange Situation paradigm) of life will be more responsive and positive during play interactions with both parents in the second year. The sample consisted of 227 infants (50.1% female); 55.1% had a father who met the …

The Effects Of Hiv Onset, Gender And Casual Sex Attitude On Perceptions And Reactions Towards Plhiv, Colin Hong Jie Tan, George D. Bishop Sep 2016

The Effects Of Hiv Onset, Gender And Casual Sex Attitude On Perceptions And Reactions Towards Plhiv, Colin Hong Jie Tan, George D. Bishop

Modern Psychological Studies

The present study examined undergraduates’ attributions (control, responsibility and blame), emotional responses (anger and sympathy) and helping intentions (personal help and support for institutional assistance) towards PLHIV in Singapore. A 2 x 2 between-subjects design using vignettes systematically manipulated HIV onset controllability (high: casual sex / low: unfaithful spouse) and PLHIV gender (male/female). Two hundred fiftythree undergraduates from the National University of Singapore participated in the study. Significant main effects of HIV onset controllability were found for participants’ attributions, emotional responses and support for institutional assistance. A marginally significant main effect of HIV onset controllability was found for participants’ personal …

Deception: Neurological Foundations, Cognitive Processes, And Practical Forensic Applications, Jason T. Weber Sep 2016

Deception: Neurological Foundations, Cognitive Processes, And Practical Forensic Applications, Jason T. Weber

Modern Psychological Studies

Deception is a foundational part of everyday interactions, and everyone will be deceived and will be a deceiver at some point in their life. When examining the brain while telling a lie, neuroimaging studies have shown an increased activity in the prefrontal cortex. While some evidence does not find a correlation between deception and prefrontal activity, different types of deception activating different brain regions could explain this. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for planning and executive control, which appears to be the main cognitive process associated with deception. This is evidenced by the ability to lie increasing as executive function …

The Appraisal Similarity Effect: How Social Appraisals Influence Liking, Jomel W. X. Ng, Eddie M. W. Tong, Sher Ling Kwek Sep 2016

The Appraisal Similarity Effect: How Social Appraisals Influence Liking, Jomel W. X. Ng, Eddie M. W. Tong, Sher Ling Kwek

Modern Psychological Studies

The effects of cognitive appraisals on interpersonal relationships have hardly been studied. Three experiments examined how empathic social appraisal could influence liking. We tested for the appraisal similarity effect in which perceived similarity in appraisals boosts liking. In Experiment 1, perception of appraisal similarity led participants to express liking by disclosing personal contact information. This effect was replicated using a selfreport measure of liking in Experiments 2 and 3. Also, by independently manipulating attitude similarity, the appraisal similarity effect was deactivated under perceived attitude dissimilarity. Likewise, the robust attitude similarity effect was invalidated under perceived appraisal dissimilarity. In Experiment 3, …
