Multicultural Counselor Supervision And Perceived Differences On Client Outcome, Andrew Perez
Multicultural Counselor Supervision And Perceived Differences On Client Outcome, Andrew Perez
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine the differences between counselor supervisors’ and supervisees’ perceptions of the impact of multicultural supervision on client outcome. Counselor supervisors and supervisees may have differences in how much they believe multicultural factors affect client outcome and this study aims to determine what differences exist. These differences are important in understanding how supervisors might better serve supervisees and in turn clients. There were 61 participants in the study that consisted of faculty, counselor supervisors, counselors, and graduate students in counseling-related fields. The current study found that multicultural supervision/competence alone predicted supervisor client outcome. The …
Mental Health And Teammates, Carly O'Dell
Mental Health And Teammates, Carly O'Dell
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Mental health is an aspect so essential throughout the human experience, yet an aspect overlooked by many. Specifically, mental health in youth is an area hardly touched by different initiatives, programs, and organizations that are put in place in order to bring assistance and guidance to youth. This is despite overwhelming statistics regarding youth and mental health. After analyzing the TeamMates Mentoring Program and finding inadequate measures in place regarding mental health, different initiatives were created in order to increase the program’s use of advocacy, awareness, and actions regarding mental health in youth.

Understanding The Relationship Between Sexual Identity, Life Satisfaction, Psychological Well-Being, And Online Community Use, Aaliyah L. Gray, Erin W. Moore
Modern Psychological Studies
Identity-based frameworks allow for a diverse look at sexuality because they consider non-binary groups that are typically excluded. This study sought to address gaps in LGBQ research by utilizing a diverse sample of sexual identities. It was hypothesized that asexual, demisexual, polysexual, and pansexual individuals would report lower levels of life satisfaction and psychological well-being, more frequent support-seeking internet use, and lower sense of community compared to gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals. A total of 284 individuals completed an online survey. Results suggest that experiences of life satisfaction, well-being, and sense of community are more nuanced than considered in past …

In August 2017, APA announced a collaboration with the Center for Open Science to host data and preprints on PsyArXiv. APA journals and those of many other publishers allow posting prepublication manuscripts on the internet. More and more, scholars are pushing against the closed systems of publishing in favor of opening access, narrowly in regards to scholarly publications and more broadly in terms of the entire life cycle of research. When I talk with faculty at my institution, the two general responses I receive to the question, “What does open access look like in your discipline?” is either that it …

Touro University Berlin
Introduction
Intercultural competence (IC) is an important skill to be gained from higher education. However, it remains unclear what IC means to students and what factors might influence their definitions of IC. The aim of the current study was to qualitatively assess how students at one higher education institution in the USA define IC and to quantitatively test for relationships among IC components and various demographic characteristics, including intercultural experience and study context. A further aim was to descriptively compare the IC definitions from the US sample with the definitions obtained from another sample of university students in Germany.

The Psychology Of Baseball: How The Mental Game Impacts The Physical Game, Kiera Dalmass
The Psychology Of Baseball: How The Mental Game Impacts The Physical Game, Kiera Dalmass
Honors Scholar Theses
The purpose of this study was to find whether or not sports psychology can be effective. Baseball was chosen as the sport for the study because baseball can be analyzed for nearly every single factor of the game, with the exception of the mental readiness or state of the player when he steps onto the field. It therefore provides the optimal atmosphere to provide clinical and statistical support to the field of sports psychology. Despite the various, numerous pieces of literature that praise and show support for sports psychology, there hasn’t been clinical research to support it. Additionally, multiple sports …
Investigating The Effects And Mechanisms Of A Brief Savoring-Based Intervention In Partnered Individuals, Binghuang A. Wang
Investigating The Effects And Mechanisms Of A Brief Savoring-Based Intervention In Partnered Individuals, Binghuang A. Wang
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
Due to numerous barriers to mental health care access, there exists an extensive need for brief cost-effective interventions for couples. Savoring, which invites individuals to prolong and extend the positive aspect of their experiences, is a promising intervention candidate. Research on savoring has established savoring-based interventions to be efficacious at producing positive intra and interpersonal outcomes. The current investigation expands upon existing savoring research by examining the effects of savoring on an adult population in committed romantic relationships. We expect savoring to be better than control at improving intra and interpersonal outcomes. Furthermore, we aim to investigate intrapersonal factors as …

There is a significant need to develop objective measures for identifying children under the age of 8 who have anxiety and depression. If left untreated, early internalizing symptoms can lead to adolescent and adult internalizing disorders as well as comorbidity which can yield significant health problems later in life including increased risk for suicide. To this end, we propose the use of an instrumented fear induction task for identifying children with internalizing disorders, and demonstrate its efficacy in a sample of 63 children between the ages of 3 and 7. In so doing, we extract objective measures that capture the …
How Does Reading Fiction Improve Theory Of Mind?, Anna Brown, Noelle Mayne, Gabriella Monferrato, Margot Simeone
How Does Reading Fiction Improve Theory Of Mind?, Anna Brown, Noelle Mayne, Gabriella Monferrato, Margot Simeone
Academic Festival
How does reading about fictional characters influence the way we view people in the everyday world? Recent research (Kidd & Castano, 2013) suggests that reading “literary” fiction improves a reader’s ability to understand other people, as measured by a test of Theory of Mind (ToM). However, reading “pop” fiction does not improve ToM. This finding has been difficult to replicate with other works of literature or pop fiction. Perhaps some feature in the text besides “literariness” drives changes in ToM?
In our study, we explored two questions: 1) Do reading preferences interact with the type of story presented? and 2) …

Rates of homelessness have lowered by 5.6% in West Virginia since 2016 (U.S. Department of Housing and Development, 2017). However, it remains an issue in Cabell County with an estimated 205 sheltered, and an unknown number of unsheltered, individuals in 2015 (WV Department of Health and Human Resources, 2016). Furthermore, funding for homeless shelters is being cut nationally (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 2017). In order to combat homelessness, individuals need a reliable source of income, but in West Virginia the unemployment rate is 5.1%. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2017). Additionally, individuals facing homelessness encounter difficult barriers when seeking …

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The issue of healthcare in the United States of America continues to be a hot-button issue for millions of Americans and the politicians representing them in Washington D.C. The cost of healthcare continues to rise, population size within the country is continuously increasing, and the number of individuals lacking access to quality healthcare grows more and more everyday.
In this environment, understanding the role of free clinics in a community and how these clinics are maintained is becoming increasingly important. In this paper, I will outline the history of free clinics, who runs them and why. I will then provide …

Inequity For Women In Psychology: How Much Have We Progressed And What Work Still Needs To Be Done?, Caitlin Martin-Wagar
Psychology from the Margins
Despite the higher rate of women in the field of psychology, there continue to be significant inequities that impact women’s career trajectories. This is especially prevalent in academia and leadership roles in psychological organizations. A historical review and analysis of past barriers and obstacles to women’s success in psychology will be provided, followed by current trends. While many have worked to understand the source of these disparities, significant institutional and systemic societal barriers continue to persist. It will be argued that the field of psychology needs to work more diligently to assuage the barriers that result in inequitable treatment and …

ETSU Faculty Works
Emerging evidence indicates self-compassion can be beneficial for medical populations and for medical adherence; yet, research to date has not fully examined the reasons for this association. This study examined the association of dispositional self-compassion to adherence across five medical samples and tested the extent to which perceived stress accounted for this association. Five medical samples (total N = 709), including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and cancer patients, recruited from various sources, completed online surveys. Self-compassion was positively associated with adherence in all five samples. A meta-analysis of the associations revealed a small average effect size (average r = .22, …

Political Polarization And Intolerance Of Intolerance, Nina Luiggi
Political Polarization And Intolerance Of Intolerance, Nina Luiggi
Honors Projects in Applied Psychology
Scholarly research linking conservatism to intolerance is widespread (McAdams et al, 2008; Jost et al, 2003): however, relatively little attention is paid to the impact of intolerance on the liberal side. Nevertheless, mounting empirical research and popular journalism suggests that intolerance works both ways, but that liberals are not aware of their own intolerance. Building on survey methodology used by Crawford and Pilanski (2014), the present study uses a scale of ideological consistency, intolerance judgments across a range of issues, and perceived intolerance, to explore both the intolerance levels and perceived intolerance levels of liberals and conservatives, as well as …
