A Comparison Of Resiliency In Adult Children Of Alcoholics Versus Adult Children Of Non-Alcoholics, Skylar Redlin, Jamie Borchardt
A Comparison Of Resiliency In Adult Children Of Alcoholics Versus Adult Children Of Non-Alcoholics, Skylar Redlin, Jamie Borchardt
Modern Psychological Studies
Alcoholism is a common occurrence. According to the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (1998), there are approximately 76 million Americans who have had a family member with an alcohol problem. Adult children of alcoholics (ACoAs) were studied to compare the differences between resiliency scores with adult children of non-alcoholics (NACoAs). We found that p = .022, indicating there was a significant difference among ACoAs and NACoAs. We found that NCoAs had a higher resiliency score than NACoAs. We also looked at differences in resiliency scores among the ACoAs who had a same gendered alcoholic parent and an opposite gendered …
The Function Of Role Models In The Identity Development Of African American Male Adolescents And Young Adults, Gensis Galan
The Function Of Role Models In The Identity Development Of African American Male Adolescents And Young Adults, Gensis Galan
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The function of role models in the lives of adolescents has been linked to many positive outcomes, including academic success and enhanced physical activity (Assibey-Mensah, 1997; Babey, Wolstein, & Diamant, 2016); however, it remains unclear who adolescents and young adults are seeking and identifying as role models. This two-part interdisciplinary project started with literary analyses of a memoir and semi-autobiographical novel that depicted the experience of two African American male adolescents and their exploration of identity; during this time, each male developed the desire for a role model whose behavior he could imitate. The second part of this project included …

It Is In The Cards: An Analysis Of Greeting Card Selection Through Identity And Personality, Emily Topilow
Honors Projects
In this exploratory study, personal and social identity were analyzed for their effect on how consumers choose greeting cards. Factors, including personality, relationships, and identity will be qualitatively analyzed to understand people’s buying habits. Certain factors, including gender, personality, relationships, type of card, and frequency of receiving and giving cards, will be qualitatively analyzed for frequency. The two theories analyzed were the Social Identity Theory (SIT) and the Identity Theory (IT).
525 college-aged students were surveyed to examine their purchasing habits of greeting cards. The results showed that the identity of the card giver and the identity of the card …

In Search Of Themes – Keys To Teaching Qualitative Analysis In Higher Education, Petra K. Boström
In Search Of Themes – Keys To Teaching Qualitative Analysis In Higher Education, Petra K. Boström
The Qualitative Report
Teaching research methods in psychology involves communicating a number of methods stemming from diverse philosophical traditions. The process of searching for themes is a central part of various qualitative methods of analysis and involves the transformation of coded raw data into a thematic structure. This process has often been briefly described which can create a problem for students who encounter qualitative analysis for the first time. The aim of the present paper is to explore how the process of transforming codes into a thematic structure can be described and communicated through higher education teaching. Literature on research methods and related …

Ptsd Precipitating From Sexual Abuse And Combat War Exposure And Co-Morbid Disorders Of Chronic Pain, Substance Abuse And Immune Systems, Jessica Anzalone
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma and stress related disorder that some people develop after exposure to a traumatic life altering event. The person must witness the traumatic event, have the traumatic event occur to a loved one, or experience a traumatic event first hand. According to the publication of the American Psychiatric Association, the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the diagnostic criteria for the identity of PTSD must include behavioral symptoms that accompany PTSD in four diagnostic clusters; re-experiencing, avoidance, negative cognitions and mood, and arousal (American Psychological Association, 2018). Two …
Silent Singing: Investigating Visual Perceptual Narrowing Of Rhythm From A Developmental Perspective, Gillian Sheehan
Silent Singing: Investigating Visual Perceptual Narrowing Of Rhythm From A Developmental Perspective, Gillian Sheehan
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In the field of rhythm perception, research has focused on auditory-perceptual-narrowing with little focus on visual-perceptual-narrowing. The purpose of this study is to determine if the visual system narrows similarly to the auditory system, and if one sense is better at detecting rhythmic differences across cultural boundaries, e.g. Western vs. Non-Western rhythms. Using a within-subjects design participants watched videos of a woman singing the same or different Western and Balkan rhythms. The vocals were removed from the videos, leaving just the movement of the woman’s mouth. Participants watched two videos in a row containing either Western or Balkan rhythms and …
Mindful Phone Use, Gwendolynne Weissinger
Mindful Phone Use, Gwendolynne Weissinger
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The rapid, global adoption of smartphones is undoubtedly affecting users’ quality of life. Existing research has published mixed findings on whether or not these devices are beneficial or detrimental to users’ well-being. Phone use shifts a user’s focus away from the present moment and towards the device at hand. Mindfulness, or “the state of being attentive to and aware of what is taking place in the present,” has been shown to improve individual’s well-being through promoting self-awareness that allows for behavior regulation that is congruent with one’s basic needs (Brown & Ryan, 2003). The primary aim of this research was …
Examining Perceptions Of Maternal Support And Pms Symptoms In College Women, Elizabeth Cook
Examining Perceptions Of Maternal Support And Pms Symptoms In College Women, Elizabeth Cook
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is categorized by individuals experiencing symptoms, such as bloating, cravings, and emotional dysregulation, beginning one to two weeks before menstruation that interfere with their daily lives. PMS is experienced by much of the female population; specifically, around 40% of women experience moderate to severe PMS symptoms (Ussher, 2003). It has been shown that familial relationships can affect one’s emotional state in a multitude of settings, and a mother-daughter relationship is one of the most important, yet conflictual, relationships in a daughter’s life (Brooks-Gunn & Paikoff, 1997). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of …
Exploring Traditional Sex-Role Stereotypes And Gendered Misconceptions In Intimate Partner Violence, Hannah J. Frey
Exploring Traditional Sex-Role Stereotypes And Gendered Misconceptions In Intimate Partner Violence, Hannah J. Frey
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is an issue that affects millions of people and yet many people in the United States base all that they know about the issue on myths. These myths surrounding IPV (e.g., the victim must have provoked their perpetrator) often lead an individual to blame the victim for what has happened. Previous research has shown that the overwhelming amount of victim blaming that occurs related to these accepted myths is connected to a traditionalist view of sex-role stereotypes (Esqueda & Harrison, 2005). While this connection has been shown through research, the specific role that gendered assumptions about …
Evidence For Viability-Vulnerability: Early Stress Predicts Inhibition In Girls, But Not Boys At 24 Months, Marissa M. Dawson
Evidence For Viability-Vulnerability: Early Stress Predicts Inhibition In Girls, But Not Boys At 24 Months, Marissa M. Dawson
Honors Capstones
Current literature within the field of child cognitive development lacks the understanding of the effects of child sex on cognitive development. . It is previously known that children’s social and cognitive development can be affected, positively or negatively, by outside factors, such as low socioeconomic status, but additional factors need to be examined. This study aims to fill these gaps. This study examined the associations between early cognitive development, child sex, and contextual stress through use of data from an overarching longitudinal study. Mothers completed self-report paper questionnaires, gathering basic background information and levels of anxiety and depression, at 4 …
Do You Remember? Mock Jurors’ Perceptions Of Elder Maltreatment When The Elder Has Alzheimer’S Disease, Samantha Kameese
Do You Remember? Mock Jurors’ Perceptions Of Elder Maltreatment When The Elder Has Alzheimer’S Disease, Samantha Kameese
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Elder maltreatment is a significant problem in the United States affecting about 10% of older Americans. According to the Stereotype Content Model, elders are seen as warm but lacking competence. This also influences the stereotype that all elders have some sort of cognitive deficit causing the assumptions that an elder may lack certain cognitive abilities and may not be credible enough to provide an accurate abuse claim. The purpose of this study was to examine jurors’ perceptions of elder maltreatment when the elder has a cognitive impairment, specifically Alzheimer’s disease. The approach that was used in this study was an …
The Effects Of Guided Imagery As Mental Practice During The Learning Of A Novel Psychomotor Skill, Justine Revermann
The Effects Of Guided Imagery As Mental Practice During The Learning Of A Novel Psychomotor Skill, Justine Revermann
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
Previous research has shown that mental imagery is beneficial for individuals in improving performance, increasing confidence, and decreasing anxiety, among many other benefits. The purpose of my research study was to test if mental imagery is successful in creating these benefits for college students while learning a new psychomotor skill. Participants were first introduced to an athletic taping skill by viewing a two-minute video. After the video, they completed five minutes of physical practice of the skill, took an anxiety and confidence inventory, and completed a pre-test of the skill during which they were timed and scored. They were then …
Comparing Suicide Risk, Acquired Capability, Distress Tolerance, And Reasons For Living In Those With Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Or Disordered Eating, Brooke Beck
Student/Alumni Personal Papers
Acquired Capability has been a longstanding measure used to predict the likelihood that one may attempt suicide. However, does it hold true in every scenario? Are there other measures that would prove more accurate? This research evaluated these questions, examining archival data of two identified risk groups: those participating in Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) and Disordered Eating (DE).
When measured using the Acquired Capability for Suicide Scale (ACSS), both groups have similar results in survey data as well as when measuring Distress Tolerance. This would imply that both are at the same risk of attempting suicide. However, when the groups were …
Transformational Leadership And Perceived Role Breadth: Multi-Level Mediation Of Trust In Leader And Affective Organizational Commitment, Benjamin Philip Hardy
Transformational Leadership And Perceived Role Breadth: Multi-Level Mediation Of Trust In Leader And Affective Organizational Commitment, Benjamin Philip Hardy
All Dissertations
This dissertation proposed a multilevel serial mediation model wherein trust in leader and affective organizational commitment mediated the effect of transformational leadership on perceived role breadth. This same serial mediation model was examined with role instrumentality as the outcome variable. Moreover, perceived role breadth, after factor analyses, was broken into three separate factors roughly corresponding to: 1) organizational loyalty, 2) sportsmanship, and 3) altruism. The sample of this study was 997 employees from government agencies who were surveyed about their leader and other constructs described in the hypothesized model. All employees reported which specific leader they had, therefore allowing each …

Reducing The Risk: Psychological And Technological Approaches For Improving Handwashing Practices In The Foodservice Industry, Jeffrey Allan Clark
Reducing The Risk: Psychological And Technological Approaches For Improving Handwashing Practices In The Foodservice Industry, Jeffrey Allan Clark
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As Americans are spending greater portions of their dollar on food consumed outside the home, the foodservice industry plays more of an integral part of daily existence compared to previous generations. Given the numerous annual foodborne illness outbreaks that threaten human lives while undermining confidence in the food supply, food safety is a pertinent issue for industry stakeholders, government regulators, and consumers. Food worker handwashing reduces the risk of foodborne illness transmission, yet compliance with this simple behavior is a complex problem. This dissertation addresses, predominantly, the issue of sub-optimal handwashing practices through applying psychology and technology, including wearable computers …

Complex Trauma: Counselors' Self-Efficacy And Treatment, Breeze Valenska Rueda
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive and exploratory mixed-method study was twofold: to explore counselors’ perceptions and knowledge regarding complex trauma and, assess counselors’ perceptions regarding their level of confidence when working with this population. The study determined what relevant factors were related to counselors’ perceived self-efficacy concerning complex trauma. Although complex trauma is emerging as an important issue, there is limited research regarding counselors’ experiences with complex trauma. The current study explored participants’ perceptions when providing services to individuals with prolonged and cumulative trauma and provided a greater understanding of counselors’ recognition and selfefficacy when working with this population. A …
Social Influences On Vocal Development In A Wild Parrot, Caleb Michael Mand Arellano
Social Influences On Vocal Development In A Wild Parrot, Caleb Michael Mand Arellano
Theses and Dissertations
The Social Intelligence Hypothesis (SIH) proposes that navigating complex societies requires increased neural processing to monitor shifting relationships. SIH evolutionary focus of brain size variation in adults originally ignored the developmental frameworks leading to increased sociality. I studied the ontogeny of early sibling interactions in wild Green‐rumped Parrotlets (Forpus passerinus) in a Venezuelan population that exhibited large variation in brood size and engaged in elaborate social interactions and complex social learning during nestling development. To test if nests of varying brood sizes exhibit differences in social complexity, I quantified the number and strength of sibling play partnerships, as a proxy …

Leadership Style As A Moderator Of The Relationships Between Role Stressors And Organizational Commitment, Tanya Chellani
Leadership Style As A Moderator Of The Relationships Between Role Stressors And Organizational Commitment, Tanya Chellani
Master's Theses
The purpose of the present study was to examine the moderating effect of leadership style on the relationships between role stressors and organizational commitment. The study hypothesized that negative relationships between role conflict and role ambiguity and both affective and normative commitment would be weaker for employees who perceived their supervisors as relationship-oriented rather than task-oriented. Furthermore, the study explored the direct relationship between role stressors and continuance commitment, along with the moderating effect of leadership style on this relationship. Responses to an online survey from 126 employees were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression. Results showed that leadership style did …
The Moderating Effect Of Self-Esteem On The Relationship Between Servant Leadership And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, Whitney Kanavel
The Moderating Effect Of Self-Esteem On The Relationship Between Servant Leadership And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, Whitney Kanavel
Master's Theses
Previous research has shown that servant leadership is related to organizational citizenship behaviors. However, little attention has been paid to the possible moderators of this relationship. Therefore, the present study proposed that a personality characteristic (self-esteem) will moderate the relationship between servant leadership and organizational citizenship behaviors. It was hypothesized that the relationship between servant leadership and organizational citizenship behaviors would be stronger for employees with low self-esteem than for those with high self-esteem. Results of a self report survey from 204 employed individuals in various industries found that self-esteem moderated the relationship between servant leadership and organizational citizenship behaviors. …

Measuring Neural Time Series Data In A Sensory Deprivation Tank, Jackson Gregory, Tian Lan, Uri Maoz, Amir Raz
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
We are interested in studying the neurological and physiological effects of the float pod, also known as REST therapy, or sensory deprivation tank. Float pods rely on the concept of depriving most senses (from sound and light to temperature and proprioception) in a pool filled with buoyant salt water at body temperature. While float pods are most commonly used in spa environments, we intend to look at the potential benefits of floating under the empirical lens. In this study, we aim to measure neural activity using electroencephalography (EEG). We intend to look at the different levels of relaxation and the …

Perspectives Of Indian Internationals On Mental Illness And Christian Missions, Morgan Margerison
Senior Honors Theses
When psychology is integrated with Christianity as a form of missions, it is vital that the destination country’s cultural perspectives be considered in the practice of these fields. This phenomenology obtained Indian cultural perceptions and experiences of mental health, as well as their perspectives and experiences regarding the integration of psychology and Christianity. The participants framed mental and emotional health in the context of relationship, addressed it with faith practices and values, and evaluated it based on cognitive functioning and lack of positive emotions. They expressed cultural concerns with victim mentality, stigma, and shifts in moral values. Regarding the integration …
