Fantasy At The Service Of Mathematics, Clara Ziskin, Esther Williams, Alla Shmukler
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This article aims to introduce the reader to a book published in 2016 under the title “Amazing Tales from the Magic Wood and Famous Problems of Mathematics” by Elli Shor and Clara Ziskin. The book offers an original method of presenting mathematical facts and history through a fantasy narrative. The book’s two authors, Clara Ziskin and Alla Shmukler (Elli Shor), together with consultant psychologist Esther Williams, share here several excerpts taken from the first part of the book as well as related illustrations and mathematical riddles, so that the reader can form an informed impression of the book, its structure, …

An "I" For An "I": A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Instigated And Reciprocal Incivility, Lauren S. Park, Larry R. Martinez
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Incivility and its negative impacts on individuals, teams, and organizations have been widely studied in workplace contexts, but the literature lacks a comprehensive understanding of incivility from the instigator's perspective. This meta-analysis of instigated incivility included 35,344 workers from 76 independent samples. Results showed that instigated incivility was related to several correlates including psychological ill-being, ρ = .36, and well-being, ρ = -.17; physical well-being, ρ = -.25; personal dispositions that are risk factors, ρ = .47, and preventative factors, ρ = -.34; negative, ρ = .28, and positive, ρ = -.33, job attitudes; positive team characteristics, ρ = -.28; …

Timing Of Childhood Adversities And Self-Injurious Thoughts And Behaviors In Adolescence, Samantha J. North, Kathryn R. Fox, Jenalee R. Doom
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Faculty Scholarship
Greater childhood adversity predicts a higher likelihood of later self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITB). There is little research focused on whether the timing of childhood adversity predicts SITB. The current research examined whether the timing of childhood adversity predicted parent- and youth-reported SITB at age 12 and 16 years in the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN) cohort (n = 970). We found that greater adversity at age 11–12 years consistently predicted SITB at age 12 years, while greater adversity at age 13–14 years consistently predicted SITB at age 16 years. These findings suggest there may be sensitive …

Learning Experiences Of Social Science Students In An Interdisciplinary Computing Minor, Valerie A. Carr, Maureen C. Smith, Belle Wei, Morris E. Jones
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The rapid growth of the digital economy and an associated increase in user-generated data has created a strong need for interdisciplinary computing professionals possessing both technical skills and knowledge of human behavior. To help meet this need and with funds from NSF IUSE, we developed an academic minor in Applied Computing for Behavioral and Social Sciences at San Jose State University. The minor involves a four-course sequence that includes programming fundamentals, data structures and algorithms, data cleaning and management, and a culminating project. At our institution and nationwide, social science students are more diverse than engineering students, with respect to …
Christianity And Fear: The Neuropsychological Processes Involved In The Relationship Between Fear And Religion, Courtney Welch-Horstman
Christianity And Fear: The Neuropsychological Processes Involved In The Relationship Between Fear And Religion, Courtney Welch-Horstman
Obsculta
Religion frames the lives and minds of individuals who practice the Christian faith. Regarding the mind, this statement can be understood both figuratively and literally. The thought processes of human beings who claim to believe in God are strongly influenced by their perspective of Deity and what they think God's primary characteristic is. While some view God as loving, others view God as mainly angry and punishing. The way this question is answered by an individual reveals much about his or her neurocircuitry and which brain structures are most active and developed. These circuits and structures then impact the behaviors …
Does Mindfulness Differ From Attentiveness? A Multitrait-Multimethod Assessment, Chelsea Nicole Jones
Does Mindfulness Differ From Attentiveness? A Multitrait-Multimethod Assessment, Chelsea Nicole Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The present study compared differences between the constructs of mindfulness and cognitive attention using multiple measures of both constructs. These measures included several self-report and behavioral measures of both constructs. Several models were constructed to test the relationship between mindfulness and cognitive attention. Participants from an online Qualtrics subject pool sample were included (N = 200). Participants completed all measures of mindfulness and cognitive attention online and reported demographic information as well as previous exposure to mindfulness. Results indicated that mindfulness and cognitive attention are in fact separate constructs, however it is important that researchers conceptualize how these constructs are …
Working Memory Modules On The Threshold To Consciousness, Antonio Martin
Working Memory Modules On The Threshold To Consciousness, Antonio Martin
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Current literature is claiming for an important relationship between conscious experiencing and executive functions (mainly working memory). Since there is still a lack of empirical evidence relating those mental processes, the aim of this research is to continue exploring those relations by finding out how different components of working memory may affect the threshold to consciousness. The experiment contained three groups of people who performed two concurrent computerized tasks. The first one consisted of a replication of a priming and subjective visibility task (de Loof et al., 2013) for all the groups. Both experimental groups differed from the control group …
Does A Mindfulness Intervention Have A Significant Effect On Preference For Intrinsic Or Extrinsic Benefits Of Environmentally Friendly Behaviours?, Annabelle Violet Lobb
Does A Mindfulness Intervention Have A Significant Effect On Preference For Intrinsic Or Extrinsic Benefits Of Environmentally Friendly Behaviours?, Annabelle Violet Lobb
The Plymouth Student Scientist
There is an increased interest in encouraging the public to regularly demonstrate environmentally friendly behaviours. Previous research has suggested that these behaviours can be sustained for longer if the individual is intrinsically motivated rather than extrinsically motivated. People who feel a high connection to nature are more likely to demonstrate environmentally friendly behaviour; this can be measured both explicitly and implicitly. It is important to cultivate a high implicit connection to nature because implicit attitudes have an underlying influence on performing environmentally friendly behaviours that are not deliberately thought about. Mindfulness can be used by individuals with a low connection …
Can You Hear It? Identifying The Priority And Function Of Overlapping Auditory Medical Alarms, Cassie Parker
Can You Hear It? Identifying The Priority And Function Of Overlapping Auditory Medical Alarms, Cassie Parker
The Plymouth Student Scientist
This paper presents an experimental study that exhibits the differences seen between the recognition of high and moderate priority auditory alarms when played simultaneously. Past research has demonstrated that the current IEC-60601-1-8 alarms used in clinical settings are challenging to identify and learn, and that newly developed auditory icons are easier to discriminate. The current research compares these two types of alarms and measures participant ability to recognise both the function and priority of single sounding and combination sounding alarms. Participants were either assigned to listen to IEC alarms or auditory icons and had to determine the function and priority …
Negative Emotional Appeals: The Effectiveness Of Fear And Guilt Communicative Appeals On Individuals Pro-Environmental Behaviour And Environmental Concern To Microplastic Pollution, Gavin Miller
The Plymouth Student Scientist
In an ever-growing ‘throwaway’ society, the world’s oceans are coming under new and persistent pressures from anthropogenic activity. Marine plastic pollution is caused exclusively by human behaviours and decisions. Plastics, which accumulate in the ocean and degrade into brittle and ever-smaller fragments called ‘microplastics’, have the potential to compromise human food security and have been found in a range of items for human consumption. Microplastics also enter the marine environment directly as a result of human activity; Napper and Thompson (2016) demonstrated that as many as 700,000 microplastic fibres can enter waterways every laundry cycle. Despite this however, general microplastic …
Reliability Of Targets In A Picture Naming Task, Adele Conn
Reliability Of Targets In A Picture Naming Task, Adele Conn
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The Words in Game (WinG) test is a tool for assessing language development in children, two versions of this test have been developed, one in Italy (Bello et al., 2012) and one in England (Cattani et al., 2019). The present research consists of two studies aiming to determine the reliability of the targets used in the English WinG cards. Study One uses 17 adult participants to rate each set of cards (Italian and English) on how well they represent target constructs, to see if one set is rated as ‘better’ than the other. Study Two consists of the WinG test …
Triadic Relations Between Parents' Screen Use, Parenting Stress And Child Vocabulary Ability, Danielle Jayne Northcott
Triadic Relations Between Parents' Screen Use, Parenting Stress And Child Vocabulary Ability, Danielle Jayne Northcott
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The present study aimed to primarily investigate the role of parental mobile phone use in predicting children’s receptive and expressive vocabulary ability. A secondary aim was to investigate the triadic relations between parents’ mobile phone use, parenting stress and children’s receptive and expressive vocabulary ability. Parents’ iPhone screen time data were automatically recorded for seven consecutive days, whilst parents self-reported the hours in which they were in the presence of their child during those seven days. Successively after the collection of these data, twenty parents and their 36-month-old children came into the Plymouth BabyLab whereby parenting stress and child vocabulary …
The Role Of Social Connectedness In Pro-Environmental Behaviours At A Trait And Situational Level, Bethany Pinnell
The Role Of Social Connectedness In Pro-Environmental Behaviours At A Trait And Situational Level, Bethany Pinnell
The Plymouth Student Scientist
This study investigated the effect of trait and situational social connectedness on participants pro-environmental behaviours (PEB). There were 90 participants split equally into two conditions, a socially included condition, used to create the feeling of social connection, and a socially excluded condition. Participants started by completing a social connectedness scale (SCS) to measure their feeling of trait social connectedness in everyday life. They then played the cyberball game on the computer which they were told was against two other participants, however it just virtual characters. In the Cyberball game participants were either included or excluded. After this they did a …

Fibromyalgia has a significant impact on the lives of patients; symptoms are influenced by psychological factors, such as psychological flexibility and catastrophizing. The objective of this study was to determine the importance of these variables in moderating the association between the severity and impact of fibromyalgia symptoms. A total of 187 patients from a general hospital population were evaluated using the Combined Index of Severity of Fibromyalgia (ICAF), the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS). A series of multiple regression analyses were carried out using the PROCESS macro and decision …
Stigma And Juror Bias Toward Mentally Ill Defendants, Sydney Garrison
Stigma And Juror Bias Toward Mentally Ill Defendants, Sydney Garrison
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study examined the influence of mental illness on mock juror decisions in a criminal case. With the knowledge that mental illness continues to be highly stigmatized, I hypothesized that the presence of a mental illness in a defendant of a violent crime would have significant effects on participants’ case decisions and their perception of the defendant’s guilt. Participants in the study read a fictional vignette describing a homicide and a defendant in which the defendant’s mental illness diagnosis was varied (major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, no mental illness). Participants were then required to answer 6 questions regarding …
Understanding The Importance Of Ambition In The Workplace, Jeff Bean
Understanding The Importance Of Ambition In The Workplace, Jeff Bean
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Though a common term, ambition is a multifaceted concept that is vastly under researched despite it being labeled necessary for success in the workplace. Of even greater irony is that several sources indicate a significant majority of the reason that employees leave organizations is due to a perceived lack of career development or opportunity, a problem that speaks directly to talent management practices. In light the costly nature of this problem and the presence of sophisticated talent management professionals in large and medium-sized organizations which comprise half or more of the workforce, it causes one to question the assumptions that …
Psychological Factors And Gastrointestinal Symptoms During Running, Alex Michael Ehlert
Psychological Factors And Gastrointestinal Symptoms During Running, Alex Michael Ehlert
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, such as nausea and gas, are common problems for athletes in endurance sport. There is considerable evidence that psychological factors influence GI function, but little research has evaluated this in the context of exercise-induced GI symptoms. The overall purpose of this dissertation was to explore the role of psychological factors in the incidence and management of GI symptoms during endurance running. Study 1 assessed associations between several psychological factors, GI symptoms, and nutrition intake before and during runs. Study 2 evaluated the effects of daily breathing interventions on GI symptoms, psychological factors, and heart rate variability (HRV) …

Involuntary Celibates’ Experiences Of And Grievance Over Sexual Exclusion And The Potential Threat Of Violence Among Those Active In An Online Incel Forum, Anne Speckhard, Molly Ellenberg, Jesse Morton, Alexander Ash
Journal of Strategic Security
This article represents the largest ever primary data-based study of involuntary celibates (incels), previously studied nearly exclusively through analysis of online postings. The incel movement has been characterized by some as a radical ideology, with mass murderers such as Elliot Rodger, Alek Minassian, and Chris Harper Mercer being portrayed as prototypical of the movement. However, there is a dearth of research through direct questioning of incels and therefore very little nuanced understanding of the community, its shared grievances, and its opinions regarding violence in its name. The present study of over 250 self-identified incels demonstrates that although the majority of …

James Jones And His Short Stories On Life Challenges Faced By Americans In The Xx Century, Elmira Muratova
Philology Matters
The article, dealing with the centenary anniversary of James Jones, presents her own subdivision of his creative work into periods, given that the author of the article was the first researcher in the former USSR and the USA defending her monographic work in 1981 on “Problems of War and Peace in James Jones’s creative work”. The aim of her article is to highlight the role of a short story genre in evolution of American writers, including James Jones, choosing their themes and further confirming the manner and peculiarities of their writing style in their novels. The main part of the …

Reducing Prejudice Through Law: Evidence From Experimental Psychology, Roseanna Sommers, Sara Burke
Reducing Prejudice Through Law: Evidence From Experimental Psychology, Roseanna Sommers, Sara Burke
Law & Economics Working Papers
Can antidiscrimination law effect changes in public attitudes toward minority groups? Could learning, for instance, that employment discrimination against people with clinical depression is illegal cause members of the public to be more accepting toward people with mental health conditions? In this Article, we report the results of a series of experiments that test the effect of inducing the belief that discrimination against a given group is legal (vs. illegal) on interpersonal attitudes toward members of that group. We find that learning that discrimination is unlawful does not simply lead people to believe that an employer is more likely to …

My dissertation examines two controversies related to emergent uses of information from social media in psychological research and application. It focuses on controversies surrounding studies of face-based gaydar and the use of psychographic targeting by Cambridge Analytica in the 2016 US presidential election. Each controversy is analyzed in a case study that explores the issues specific to that study in relation to broader patterns across contexts to identify emergent trends in the use of information from social media in psychological research. Qualitative Content Analysis is used to analyze extant texts relevant to each case. In each study, findings related to …
Are Delusions Beliefs?, Dorothy Reviss
Are Delusions Beliefs?, Dorothy Reviss
Publications and Research
A belief is one’s personal attitude regarding an issue in the universe that contains evidence of truth to it. A delusion can be defined as a peculiar belief that contradicts reality, scientific evidence, and rational thinking, and may be attributed to personality disorders. In order to determine where a delusion is a belief, it is important to recognize the circumstances under which certain beliefs are held. While a delusion sounds similar to a false belief, it is an entirely unique phenomenon. In the case of personality disorders like the Capgras delusion, schizophrenia, and Reverse Othello syndrome individuals genuinely believe in …

Psychological Reflections On Mahatma Gandhi And The Future Of Satyagraha, Charles B. Strozier
Psychological Reflections On Mahatma Gandhi And The Future Of Satyagraha, Charles B. Strozier
New England Journal of Public Policy
The article examines the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi from a psychological perspective. Special attention is given to the psychoanalytic study of Gandhi by Erik Erikson, Gandhi’s Truth, in 1969. The author notes his personal connection with Erikson’s book, which profoundly influenced his thinking (and life). The article alternates between a close psychological reading of Erikson’s book and Gandhi’s My Experiments with Truth. The larger point of the article is to reflect on the future of satyagraha or nonviolence. Gandhi’s own meanings of satyagraha are often difficult for many to accept, given the psychological violence that infected his form …
