The Information-Seeking Habits Of Baptist Ministers, Joshua D. Lambert

MSU Libraries

The aim of this article is to determine how Baptist ministers seek information. Further research questions were used to narrow down the broad aim to a workable level. What causes ministers to seek and stop seeking information? What sources do they use? How do the information-seeking habits change as they pursue their various roles? A multiple-case study design was used. Ten ministers were interviewed with a protocol that used the Critical Incident Technique. Interviews were transcribed and coded in order to identify patterns. Baptist ministers sought information in order to accomplish a wide variety of administrative tasks, prepare for sermons, …

Homiletics At The Threshold: Pope Benedict Xvi's Invitation, Joseph Mele Jan 2008

Homiletics At The Threshold: Pope Benedict Xvi's Invitation, Joseph Mele

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores whether or not the Roman Catholic Church is reticent towards preaching and if it is, why is this so? In an age when people often prefer to hear the Word preached to personal likings and individualistic needs, why would an ecclesial institution, such as the Catholic Church, hesitate to embrace this popular trend? This dissertation places the ethos of Roman Catholic homiletics in dialogue with the writings of Pope Benedict XVI in light of his desire to 'reform the reforms' made after the Second Vatican Council. The works of Simone Weil, a Jewish philosopher and mystic, are …

Required Texts: I am very enthused about the reading and discussion that we will be doing together this semester! Augustine, The Confessions. Augustine’s theological narration of his life, conversion and ministry provides wonderful insight into what I will call the “preaching life.” That is, the preaching life describes the kind of person God desires to make of us so that we will be capable of hearing and speaking the Word of Christ in a manner that is truthful, inviting and life-changing through the work of the Spirit. Michael Pasquarello, Sacred Rhetoric. This book provides an overview of the “preaching life” …

An Examination Of The Preaching And Teaching Style Of Jesus In Relation To Current Evangelical Homiletics, Daniel Light

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Much of current evangelical pulpit ministry has veered away from the style and content demonstrated by Jesus in His preaching and teaching. The purpose of this project is to encourage pastoral preachers and teachers to prepare and practice their preaching and teaching according to the model provided by Jesus as revealed in the Gospels. Based on an examination of available literature concerning Jesus’ ministry as a communicator, and interviews with leading evangelical pastors, the project offers personal perspectives and practical advice concerning greater effectiveness in pastoral preaching and teaching by using Jesus as a model.
