In psychiatry residency, we have a didactic within our curriculum that focuses on psychotherapy. This subject culminates in our third year when our program’s psychotherapy supervisor asks each of us to create our own personal theory. It allowed us to explore and apply what we had learned up until this point and formulate our own understanding of why people are the way that they are, how people change, and how to facilitate that growth through our theory. In this course we will study John Milton’s most famous poem, Paradise Lost, alongside a selection of his major verse and prose works. Milton’s literary projects were inextricably political, and we will wade into the discourse of his legacy as either—or both—state propagandist or public scholar. We will discuss and explore Milton’s role in the charged political climate of the British Revolution of the 17^th century, as well as his work on gender, marriage, divorce, the free press, sin, and heroism.

MY LAST CONCUSSION is a thesis consisting of a critical introduction, a number of poetic influences, and a collection of poems. The introduction touches on the themes of the collection, my personal history with my subject, my changing approach to poetry, and a brief evaluation of the work as a whole. It details my approach to Catholicism, paganism, transgender identity, and oppression. My work grapples with both my current understanding of myself and my inability to enunciate my reality in the past. I aim to view divinity and personal history through a lens of queerness.

Marriage Of Heaven, Marriage Of Hell: The Marital Relationship In Asian American Poems, John J. Han

This paper discusses the marital relationship among Asian Americans, a sociological issue that has not received much critical attention, by examining spousal love or lack thereof in four Asian American poems by Yone Noguchi (1875-1947), Li-Young Lee (b. 1957), Ronald Phillip Tanaka (1944-2007), and Marilyn Chin (b. 1955), respectively. Across cultures, love and hate are two elements that exist in most marriages, yet the four poems discussed in this paper reveal something significant about Asian thought and culture.

This article is a research study focusing on the poetry singing performed by palm sap tappers in Sabu Raijua, which has become the identity of the people of Sabu Raijua, NTT. The poems that are sung are part of the process of tapping palm sap. This tradition has become the identity of the Sabu (Do Hawu) people. The following paper will explore the relationship between Emily Dickinson’s poetry, the circumstances of her life, and the historical context in which she lived to glean an understanding of how her mental health influenced her work. Selected poems by Dickinson will be reviewed and analyzed, along with a brief overview of nineteenth century attitudes towards female mental health with a particular emphasis on the medical diagnosis of female hysteria.

Progressing through my emergency medicine residency, I have built a foundation of knowledge used in identifying and treating a diverse patient population. I have been taught everything ranging from the evaluation and initial management of patients in the emergency department to pursing the proper treatment algorithm, to performing procedures, and to collaborating with various specialities. Yet, there is no training to prepare or lessen the burden of losing patients and dealing with those losses. In this poetry collection, I used my own experiences as a Vietnamese-American to present a realistic image of life in America as a minority. With the use of translanguaging and presentation of social norms in both Vietnamese and American cultures, my hope is to promote awareness of issues such as racism, colorism, body shaming, and language insecurity among Asian communities so that these problems can be healthily addressed. A lot has happened in the world, and in e-literature, since my essay débuted as a conference presentation then a publication in electronic book review in 2018. Global protests against the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor during the pandemic summer of 2020 sparked reckoning with how banal, mainstream, and lethal is white supremacy.
