Homer, Pietas, And The Cycle Of Duels In Aeneid 10 And 12, Randall Colaizzi Jan 2002

Homer, Pietas, And The Cycle Of Duels In Aeneid 10 And 12, Randall Colaizzi

Classics & Religious Studies Faculty Publication Series

Readers who encounter the Aeneid today often face an abridgement meant to fit the demands of a college literature survey: Troy, anderings, Dido, the Underworld-the exotic Odyssean Aeneid of the first six books. The poem's second half, if read at all, might offer only scenes from book 8 (etiology and shield), Nisus and Euryalus from book 9, sometimes Camilla in book 11, Turnus's death at the end of the poem. But since the first cut in such selections usually includes most of the warfare, Vergil's subtlety (and difficulty) can be misunderstood, especially if the poem's close is to be considered. …

Do You See What I See? Gepn Student Journal Entries 1999-2002, Yale University School Of Nursing

Yale School of Nursing Alumni Newsletters and Magazines

In 1974, YSN opened it doors to a unique program, originally called the three-year non-nurse college graduate program. Today it ts called the Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing or GEPN. Simply put, during GEPN, the students learn to become a nurse. They will be caring for patients by the end of the second week at YSN because this program models adult learning principles-make it real and they will remember and perform quicker; when taught in the clinical context, it is real. Our hope is that they will continue recording their experiences that will ultimately serve as a record of their …

De/Reconstructing Appearances: Lope De Vega's Inversion Of Female Beauty In The Rimas Humanas Y Divinas Del Licenciado Tome De Burguillos, Mark J. Mascia

Languages Faculty Publications

This article illustrates how Lope de Vega, in his Rimas Humanas y Divinas Del Licenciado Tome de Burguillos, subverts idealized female beauty through the glorification of a more commonplace feminine object, while the time-honored poetic conventions which favored the former are deconstructed and replaced by a new anti-norm of female objectification.

The Strange Attraction Of Blake's Urizen, Kelly Kelleway Jan 2002

The Strange Attraction Of Blake's Urizen, Kelly Kelleway

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Without Contraries is no Progression. With this simple statement in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, William Blake posited, in 1790, a process -- a Hegelian dialectic of sorts, if you will -- that has underscored much of his poetry and has revealed itself in his etchings and engravings. But what, exactly, this Blakean hypothesis means is open to debate. One way to explicate this notion is to look at it in terms of a process of reunification or recursion wherein one falls from the Blakean space of Innocence (or is dragged kicking and screaming) to the rather …

Still, Lynn Margaret Drebes Jan 2002

Still, Lynn Margaret Drebes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A collection of poems, Still, asks and attempts to answer the questions: how does memory function; how do we grieve; and what is time? The poems contend that the one consistent quality of memory is that it is never static; instead, "it comes in waves like nausea," and that this ebb and flow of memory influences necessarily the process of grieving, a recursive, rather than linear process. Time is a human construct having little bearing on the most significant, either enlightening or devastating, of human experiences. The intention of Still is not to definitively answer these questions; rather, it acknowledges …

Farfalla: A Poetry Thesis, Vanessa Leigh Huff Jan 2002

Farfalla: A Poetry Thesis, Vanessa Leigh Huff

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Farfalla is a book of poetry of the lineage of poets who believe that poetry is not in poems. It is itself alive, and ruptures from poems. All poetry is political, as it is inevitably a product of the time and place in which it was written. It is affected by politics and effects its change, as Shelley has written: "Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.";Thus striving toward "legislator" this work in progress is seeking to be in continuous motion out of the confinements of poems to a place where purposes are real and methods are issues of …

The Blues In Three Parts: A Collection Of Poetry, Short Stories, And A Screenplay, Desha Tolar Kelly

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis is entitled, “The Blues in Three Parts: A Collection of Poetry, Short Stories, and a Screenplay.” The first part, a collection of poetry, contains themes of childhood and adolescence, love and loss, life struggles, writing, and death. The second part, a collection of short stories, contains five stories centered on similar themes. The third and final part, a screenplay entitled “Cow”, contains elements of the first two parts as well. The epigraph, which contemplates the idea that the blues is not only music, but all the ups and downs of life, sets the stage for the central thread, …
