Bryant Literary Review
Sleep wouldn't come, and the valium did nothing,
so he looked through the window at the man next door watching television,
his wife gone to bed after changing him.
Then he closed his eyes and listened to cars racing on Market
come back slower, looking for girls.

My-Hundred-Year-Old Window
I live on the second floor of an old building. One room, one window. Having only one window keeps me focused on the life I can see within its perimeter.

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A collection of poems composed between the summer of 1999 and 2003. They are in the tradition of "negative ecstasy," a philosophy that the poet is nothing more than a void: in order to create, the poet requires a willing release of the ego and self, which in turn allows the poet's void to be filled with the verse. It is similar to what the Buddhists call "no mind," a method used so that works, ideas and even lives that once appeared as imperfect or failures were, by their very nature, simply unfinished acts; The process was comparable to what …

Ten Percent To Light A Desert Sky, James Cory Ness
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Ten Percent to Light a Desert Sky is a collection of poems written during my four year residency in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection is tied together through prevailing themes of communication and a collage of the desert imagery scattered throughout the work. My many influences include W. S. Merwin, Federico Garcia Lorca, Lorine Niedecker, and Bob Dylan---as well as lessons learned through careful study with Aliki Barnstone, Claudia Keelan, Douglas Unger, Mark Irwin, and Megan Becker-Leckrone The thesis is organized in four sections: Mojave Lowlight attempts to define the collections physical vocabulary; yes.. dives into the thematic examination of …

The Heresy Of Paraphrase Revisited, Stefán Snaevarr
The Heresy Of Paraphrase Revisited, Stefán Snaevarr
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
I try to rejuvenate Cleanth Brooks' old thesis about the 'heresy of paraphrase.' This I do by analysing a couple of well-known poems and by performing thought experiments of the "possible world" kind. They show that paradigmatic examples of poems are not paraphrasable. A prosaic text can be improved with the aid of a paraphrase, but a typical poem cannot. The deeper explanation for the non-rephrasability of poetry is that our understanding of it is basically tacit. In this way I hope to give Brooks' original thesis a more solid foundation.

La Critique Et Léopold Sédar Senghor / Léopold Sédar Senghor Et La Critique, Fernando Lambert
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
L. S. Senghor has maintained a double relation with criticism: his poetical work has provoked plentiful critical production and the poet has always been in dialogue with his critical examiners. Furthermore, he has practised literary criticism himself. Criticism relating to Senghor comes from two quite different sources. From 1945 to 1960, the European criticism is outstanding, while the African criticism confines itself more to peripheral questions in the Senghorian poetical work: French language
and "Negritude". The withdrawal of the poet from the political stage in 1980 is a significant date for critical production in Africa. Let us add that the …

The Qualitative Report
This autoethnographic verse is about my childhood experience of two distinct and ethnically representative family cultures. Poetry and qualitative research share in their goals of providing meaning, density, aestheticism, and reflexivity They are also evocative I selected verse as a means to express my experience, and to invite the readers reflections on this experience for themselves and others.
