English Theses & Dissertations
Imagery is often defined as language that appeals to the senses. Imagery, however, is the meat of any poem, and going beyond this simplistic definition. One of the most important functions of imagery is to help establish tone, and relationship between imagery and tone enables a poem to describe, declare, assert, or imagine-to use voices that are objective, personal, opinionated, or wildly speculative.
Tonally, the poems were aggressive, and something had to temper their edge. I went to the other extreme, looking to the most basic function of imagery-description. Obviously, all poems are, on some level, descriptive. Descriptive imagery is …

Where She Always Was, Frannie Lindsay
Where She Always Was, Frannie Lindsay
Swenson Poetry Award Winners
May Swenson Poetry Award Volume 8, with foreward by J. D. McClatchy. In his Foreword, McClatchy speaks of the musical qualities of Lindsay's work: "It is impossible, reading her poems, not to hear a musical hand at work. This is not just a matter of delicacy or virtuosity. It is also a matter of knowing how to phrase a line... Lindsay moves from detail to trope with utter poise, with an intuitive sense of what to sustain or emphasize. Her language is crisp. I can pick a stanza at random... and praise its plosive energy, its modulated vowels, its variety …
Developing A Culture Of Reclamation: Integrating History, Poetry And Video, James Armstrong, Peter Lutze, Laura Woodworth-Ney
Developing A Culture Of Reclamation: Integrating History, Poetry And Video, James Armstrong, Peter Lutze, Laura Woodworth-Ney
Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations
Culture of Reclamation (Armstrong, Lutze, & Woodworth-Ney, in progress) is a sequence of "videopoems" about Idaho, integrating poetry, historical photographs, music and videography in a video presentation, which also includes historical narrative. Three Idaho scholars in the fields of history, literacy education, and communication—the historian (Laura), poet (Jamie), and videographer (Peter)—collaborated on this cross-disciplinary project to reclaim a portion of the history of this state in a creative and engaging medium. Culture of Reclamation expresses a response to the culture of the early irrigated settlement communities along the Snake and Boise rivers. Between 1894 and 1920, a land rush to …
The New Girl, Angela Marie Meredith
The New Girl, Angela Marie Meredith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The New Girl is a collection of poems in which the poet assumes a direct, unfeigned voice. These rhythmic poems cover the deeply personal to the universal and social. The body is presented as a record of experiences both good and bad. Feminist issues pertainingto marriage, work, and sexuality are explored. Whether the poem is about a personal relationship or some aspect of society, it is likely to be multi-dimensional and suggest a duality. Overall, the poems are rooted in the spiritual and attempt to relate, with holistic honesty, a sense of reverence for the impure parts of life.
