Burn The Panopticon: Irigaray's Ethics, Difference, Poetics, Simone Roberts

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

The following essay has a purpose more than a thesis. This essay explains the central tenets of Irigaray's ethics of sexual difference through an understanding her work as that of a symbolist philosopher. Symbolist poetry and French Feminist philosophy like Irigaray's have several qualities in common. One is that the literal level of language is not where the action is. A reader must think associatively on many levels at once in order to gather and interpret the several indirect messages sent by a particular image or metaphor. The Joseph M. Bruccoli Great War Collection at the University of South Carolina was established in 1997 by Matthew J. and Arlyn Bruccoli and named for Professor Bruccoli's father. It is an expansive research archive for the literary, historical, and cultural aspects of World War I from the vantages of many of the combatant nations, holding more than 4,000 items, including 3,400 print materials comprising military training manuals, illustrated wartime magazines, trench newspapers, novels and poetry of the war, letters, diaries, postcards, scrapbooks, photo albums, and glass slides. Misogyny And (Mis)Representation: The Female Subject In The Poetry Of José De Espronceda, Cristina L. Delano

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work explores the portrayal of the female subject in the work of the Spanish Romantic poet. José de Espronceda, This study will analyze the misogynistic representation of women and the denial of female subjectivity.

The first chapter discusses the biographical, historical and literary contexts of Espronceda’s work. This section will discuss Romantic notions of subjectivity, as well as the ambivalence towards the women during the 19th century. This ambivalence produced a conflict that was reflected in the representation of women as either pure angels or vile demons.
