Elizabeth Bayley Seton's Commonplace Book Of Poetry Archives, St. Joseph Provincial House, Rare Book 31, Ellin M. Kelly Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
Elizabeth Seton’s commonplace book of poetry, compiled between 1788 and 1801, is presented. According to Ellin Kelly, “the collection provide[s] valuable insights into young Elizabeth Bayley’s character in the years prior to and after her marriage to William McGee Seton” that are not found in other sources. They show her transition from teenager to wife and mother. Forty-eight selections from thirty-two poets are included, ranging from a few lines to complete poems. Aside from Shakespeare and Milton, almost all the other poets were prominent in Elizabeth’s time. Themes among the poems include nature, the human condition, virtue, romantic love, friendship, …

Langston Hughes: The Ethics Of Melancholy Citizenship, Robert L. Tsai
Langston Hughes: The Ethics Of Melancholy Citizenship, Robert L. Tsai
Working Papers
As a body of work, the poetry of Langston Hughes presents a vision of how members of a political community ought to comport themselves, particularly when politics yield few tangible solutions to their problems. Confronted with human degradation and bitter disappointment, the best course of action may be to abide by the ethics of melancholy citizenship. A mournful disposition is associated with four democratic virtues: candor, pensiveness, fortitude, and self-abnegation. Together, these four characteristics lead us away from democratic heartbreak and toward political renewal. Hughes’s war-themed poems offer a richly layered example of melancholy ethics in action. They reveal how …
A Letter To Serafin, John Minczeski
A Letter To Serafin, John Minczeski
University of Akron Press Publications
A Letter to Serafin is a multi-paneled study of juxtapositions and duplicities, where history becomes a living entity, not just a shadowy artifact. Minczeski colors his lines with dark hues of wry comedy and sharp tones of pathos, transcending geography and time by providing testimony on behalf of those who no longer can. This is a vital book for anyone who has ever been transported by a piece of artwork, or haunted by a photograph that projects meaning beyond its borders.
"If the aim of poetry is to speak the unspeakable, then John Minczeski gives voice to all that goes …

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The Animal Coming Together, Rodney Gomez
The Animal Coming Together, Rodney Gomez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This project is an ekphrastic collection of poems. The term 'ekphrasis' is usually used to refer to texts that respond to or are influenced by particular works of visual art, but it can sometimes be used to refer to texts that respond to non-visual art as well, such as musical compositions. I take the more inclusive approach to ekphrasis: most of the poems in this collection are based on paintings, but several are based on photos, films, sculpture, multimedia works, musical compositions, and art generally. Most of the poems are based on Chican@ and Latin American art. The collection is …
