Jon Jonsson: Icelandic Mormon Poet And Translator, Fred E. Woods, Kári Bjarnason
Faculty Publications
Jon Jonsson (Jón Jónsson), a catalytic Icelandic convert to Mormonism, was a gifted poet and translator whose literary work focused on the theme of salvation. Perhaps his most valuable contribution to Mormon history is that he is the first known person to translate a portion of the Book of Moron into Icelandic. He completed a translation of the First Book of Nephi in 1881.

American Busboy, Matthew Guenette
American Busboy, Matthew Guenette
University of Akron Press Publications
"In American Busboy, a wry anti-mythology, the anti-hero busboy in an anonymous Clam Shack! tangles with the monotonous delirium of work, the indignities and poor pay of unskilled labor, the capricious deus ex machina of mean-spirited middle management, the zombified consumption of summer tourists, while jostling for the goddess-like attentions of waitresses and hostesses—all battered up in sizzlingly crisp wit and language, and deep-fried in a shiny glaze of surrealism." —Lee Ann Roripaugh
Literary Love(R)S: Recognizing The Female Outline And Its Implications In Roman Verse Satire, Kaitlyn Marie Klein
Literary Love(R)S: Recognizing The Female Outline And Its Implications In Roman Verse Satire, Kaitlyn Marie Klein
Theses and Dissertations
The existence of a metaphoric female standing in for poetic style was only plainly discussed in a paper from 1987 concerned with Roman elegiac poetry. This figure is given the title of scripta puella or written woman, since her existence depends solely on the writings of an author. These females often appear to have basis in reality; however there is insufficient evidence to allow them to cross out of the realm of fantasy. The term scripta puella in poetry refers to a perfected poetic form, one the author prefers over all others, and a human form creates the illusion of …
First Psalm: Poems And Paintings, Ashley Mae Christensen
First Psalm: Poems And Paintings, Ashley Mae Christensen
Theses and Dissertations
This collection of poems and paintings seeks to find the places where visual and written communication intersects, and the places where those two media diverge. The collection consists of poems and paintings juxtaposed, as if in conversation with one another throughout the pages. The collection treats each painting and poem as a separate attempt at prayer. As a reader turns the pages, similar questions are asked again and again, but in different settings and with different outcomes. This collection focuses on finding reconciliation between the oral culture of storytelling and the written culture of ideas, all within the context of …

That’S The Beauty Of It, Or, Why John Ashbery Is Not A Painter, Clark Lunberry
That’S The Beauty Of It, Or, Why John Ashbery Is Not A Painter, Clark Lunberry
English Faculty Research and Scholarship
The poet John Ashbery lived in Paris from roughly 1955 to 1965. It was during this period that Ashbery began writing art reviews, often examining the work of various Americans also living in Paris at this time. Among the many painters Ashbery was to review and publish about, one was the Chicago-born, Paris-based abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell and an exhibition of hers at a Paris gallery in 1964. In this essay I examine the early, more ““abstract”” poetry that Ashbery was developing during this period, thinking about it alongside the paintings of Mitchell (and, in particular, his writings about them). …

The Subaltern Can Speak: Voices Of Poets In Divided Korea, Ailee Cho
The Subaltern Can Speak: Voices Of Poets In Divided Korea, Ailee Cho
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
Spivak asks, "Can the Subaltern Speak?" and answers in the negative. The same question can be asked of South Korea following its liberation from Japanese colonial rule. But the answer is in the positive. Subaltern's voices can be heard in the poems on the division of Korea. Here, divided Korea is compared to a severed human body in deep pain as if an actual human body had been severed. It is also represented as an unnatural state that will end in apocalyptic vision. When readers return to the origin of the national division and empathize with the body in pain, …

Trickster's Taxonomy, Matthew Groneman
Trickster's Taxonomy, Matthew Groneman
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Matthew Groneman explores the dynamic nature of language through a series of poems broken into three thematically-linked sections. The first section includes poems about the natural world, scientific processes and technological innovation. The second section is centered around poems exploring American culture, from the nineteenth century to contemporary times. The final section explores the speaker's perceptions of self, particularly with regards to the speaker's masculinity relative to societal expectations thereof. The poems play with concepts of fluid semiotics by employing notions of the trickster as narrator in several poem, disrupting binaries and complicating the nature of meaning. Also utilized toward …
Autumn Leaflets: A Collection Of Poetry, Kayla I. Shown-Dean
Autumn Leaflets: A Collection Of Poetry, Kayla I. Shown-Dean
Student Theses and Dissertations
This collection of poetry was inspired by Johnny Mercer's "The Autumn Leaves." Major themes of the collection include: the unity of nature, unification of all things, the role of Christians in the secular world, and the releasing of the past. While the majority of these poems are written in free verse, occasionally the author implements formal verse such as diamante, limerick, and experimentations with the sonnet and sestina. "Autumn Leaflets" is sorted into four different titled sections: "The Falling Leaves," "Of Red and Gold," "The Sunburned Hands," and "Old Winter's Song." Each section receives its title from Mercer's lyrics and …

Voice From The Deep: A Black Student's Journey In A Dance/Movement Therapy Graduate Program, Aqueena H. Smith
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the author’s experience in a dance/movement therapy program through poetry written while in graduate school. The author uses the methodologies of lyric/poetic inquiry, artistic inquiry, and autoethnography to structure this thesis research. The thesis provides affirmation that cultural background and faith affect the perspective of an individual’s experience in graduate school. Data analysis of eighteen poems written by the author revealed themes as the results of this study. The author discusses the meaning and significance of these poems that communicate the graduate experience as a whole.
