Millie Dies In Style: Crafting Poems In Four Poetic Styles, Dan Gleason
Millie Dies In Style: Crafting Poems In Four Poetic Styles, Dan Gleason
Understanding Poetry
This exercise helps students learn about poetic style by challenging them to write poetry in different styles. To make stylistic differences most obvious, students write about the same topic in four different ways (casual, formal, depressing, whimsical). Students write poems of 4-10 lines in groups, and then they share their writings with each other. Nearly any topic may be chosen, but the topic should be a bit unusual; I like to use the tragic tale of Millie, a fictional family dog that dies suddenly by falling down an open well, to generate interest. The exercise is a fun activity that …
Remembering As A Source Of Creation In The Poetry Of Ezra Pound And H.D. And The Musical Representations Of The Holocaust By Arnold Schoenberg And Steve Reich, Ruth J. Jacobs
Lawrence University Honors Projects
This project explores the complex relationship between language and violence. Many theorists, such as Elaine Scarry, argue that language is silenced by violence and that extreme trauma inherently defies representation. Despite the impossibility of representing trauma, its preservation is a cultural and historical necessity. I am going to examine the different ways extreme violence is depicted in both poetry and music and the complex moral issues that are raised by these representations. Ezra Pound wrote The Pisan Cantos while imprisoned in a cage at the DTC in Pisa. I plan on exploring the role of personal and cultural memory in …

Predator's Tongue, Tara Mae Mulroy
Predator's Tongue, Tara Mae Mulroy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Predator’s Tongue, a collection of poetry centering on the theme of predators and prey, explores the effects of trauma and violence—physical, psychic, sexual, emotional, and mental— through free verse narratives. The sharpness in the writing forces the reader to see the fluidity of these predator/prey relationships—wounded people wound people. The section breaks of this work serve to highlight growth and development: from “animal,” giving in to base impulses and horror, to “child,” beginning to learn, respond, and adapt, and to “woman,” learning how to be an adult in adult relationships.
Through Other I'S: Las Otras, Brenda Nettles Riojas
Through Other I'S: Las Otras, Brenda Nettles Riojas
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The “I” speaks in each of the poems presented; but whose I? The collection explores the use of personae, and gives voice to “the other” I’s/las otras, women who came before us and those who walk among us. Sometimes in English, sometimes in Spanish, sometimes the voices cross between languages. Written primarily in free verse, the poems are ordered to allow the mingling of languages from the speakers on the page. Through other eyes, some of the characters revive the past, speak from the grave. They provide a glimpse into what lies beyond the “I.” We hear the …

I'Ve Been Reading About Disaster Lately, Lisa Catherine Mcmurtray
I'Ve Been Reading About Disaster Lately, Lisa Catherine Mcmurtray
Theses and Dissertations
I’ve Been Reading About Disaster Lately is a collection of original poetry which focuses on how identity and agency are shaped through personal and public circumstance, through the intersection of the human and animal, and through the development of language and personal mythology. This collection is preceeded by a critical introduction which analyzes how poets mediate public and private disaster. The introduction specifially focuses on the eight poems written by Bob Hicok in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech Shooting, and examines how language, either in its presence or absence, functions to resolve the disconnect between pre-disaster and post-disaster.

Embers From The Void, Matthew Michael Vandegriff
Embers From The Void, Matthew Michael Vandegriff
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Embers from the Void for string quartet and voice is a work centered around the idea of transition, specifically the transition state of death. Each moment explores this idea through imagery of landscape, season, and space or, more precisely, forest, winter, and emptiness (the void). The poetry, self-authored, was written for and in conjunction with the music. The two are inseparable. A running theme that will be apparent in the text is "what lies beneath the surface." An aspect of this theme will be present in each movement and is itself a metaphor for both literary ideas and the theoretical …

Dante Gabriel Rossetti And The Romance Of Loss, Jane N. Cooper
Dante Gabriel Rossetti And The Romance Of Loss, Jane N. Cooper
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
Through paired poems and paintings, Dante Gabriel Rossetti explored the nature of Love—both physical and spiritual—as made evident by distance or absence. Influenced early by his familiarity with Dante Alighieri and a confluence of changing social and artistic attitudes, Rossetti transformed the dialogue around him to a more personal internal conversation, revealed by pen and brush. This paper examines the dynamic of that pervasive thread in Rossetti’s work through a discussion of the influences upon the artist, the artist’s effect upon important figures of mid- to late nineteenth century England, and the important relationships that shaped his discourse. In addition, …
