The Call At Night When I Was Dreaming Of Figs, Ira Sukrungruang

Booth

And they were sweet, their seeds popping in my mouth,

tiny Vesuvian eruptions, and I ate them until one was left

in a Etruscan bowl of sex positions, and it rolled around

and around, in orbit of an empty center, until I lifted

it to my lips—oh tear-drop fruit!—bared my teeth,

pierced skin and flesh—

Creating 'Reflection And Refraction', Tara Prescott

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This essay offers personal narrative about the creation of Reflecting and Refracting, a collage artwork integrating literary and scientific texts regarding light. Reflecting and Refracting was made specifically for the STEAM journal’s first issue and elements were incorporated into the issue’s collaborative cover image, Equations of Light. The current essay, however, is the first time the original artwork is being published in its entirety.

Fat Jersey Blues, John Repp Feb 2014

Fat Jersey Blues, John Repp

University of Akron Press Publications

"I know I'm holding a good book in my hand when I use the other to call my friends and read poems to them. How generous John Repp is! He zooms in on the moment, but he's always glancing at everything that surrounds it. His funny poems have dark hearts, just as the sad ones are clearly written by someone capable of belly-shaking laughter. They tell wonderful stories, yet they contain chewy little nuggets that are often indifferent and even hostile to story. I've said elsewhere that a poem either writes you a check or sends you a bill, and …

Pugilism And Poetry: Guillaume Apollinaire, Arthur Cravan And The Poète-Boxeur, Austin Hancock Feb 2014

Pugilism And Poetry: Guillaume Apollinaire, Arthur Cravan And The Poète-Boxeur, Austin Hancock

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The black boxers who fled the United States to Paris in the beginning of the 20th century were a true sensation among the citys avant-garde, and of all the artists and litterateurs gathered around the rings of the Parisian boxing scene, two champions of the poetic world stand out: Guillaume Apollinaire and Arthur Cravan. For these two poets who embraced the fraternal bond which has long existed between pugilist and lyricist, the noble art came to have a unique impact both upon their poetic works and how they defined themselves as poets. By putting these two poetic heavyweights head-to-head, this …

Summary Of Creative Research Grant Results, Carin C. Fausett

In the original proposal, I indicated that this Creative Research Grant would enable me to widen my scope of artistic ability and possibility. My ability would improve through increased production which this grant would make possible through the purchase of materials and tools. The results of being accepted for this grant was a large body of work, which consisted of 25 pieces, supported by original poetry and a four page paper that explained the ideas behind the visual work. The work was completed between Jan.- june 1995. Opening night was June 19, and the show lasted until the 30th. It …

Venezuelan Portraits, Trenton Hickman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Several months ago, the Office of Research and Creative Work accepted my proposal to prove poet Richard Hugo’s concept of the poetic “triggering town” by spending two weeks in Venezuela and then letting the sensory data I gathered “trigger” a substantial body of poetry. The research grant would enable me to 1) make the information-gathering trip to Venezuela, 2) write a body of Venezuela poems (I estimated 40), and 3) revise the poems for Fall 1994 submission to literary magazines around the country.

Chiastic Inclusio In The Pentateuch: The Covenantal Ring1, Shannon Murdock, Dr. Roger Baker, Richard Draper

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Various LDS scholars have taken pains to point out the paucity of LDS scholarship on the Joseph Smith Translation (JST) of the Bible. Priceless as it is, the JST’s literary contribution to the Old Testament remains largely unexplored. Even LDS readers are uninformed with regards to significant literary contributions made by the Prophet Joseph’s inspired corrections. My ORCA project is an effort to defray this problem by investigating a Pentateuchal poetic pattern in which JST passages from the book of Moses play a significant role. I consider the results of my research a partial answer to Robert Matthews’ prediction:

Roubaud's Circus: Playing With Words And Animals In Les Animaux De Tout Le Monde, Miranda R. Mueller Jan 2014

Roubaud's Circus: Playing With Words And Animals In Les Animaux De Tout Le Monde, Miranda R. Mueller

Master's Theses

It is commonly held that there is a solid, defined line existing between men and animals. This thesis explores the ideological boundary and, through a close examination of Jacques Roubaud’s collection of poetry Les animaux de tout le monde, imagines the line as a fluid structure that can be broken, approached, and multiplied.

In a circus theme following the playful style of Roubaud’s own verses, I include several close readings of poems as well as an analysis of Roubaud’s influence from Lewis Carroll’s nonsense genre, the Fables of Jean de la Fontaine, and Medieval bestiaries in order to create a …

Poetry Of The River Tietê, Rex P. Nielson, Dr. George Handley Jan 2014

Poetry Of The River Tietê, Rex P. Nielson, Dr. George Handley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In an essay entitled “Quantity and Quality” written in 1990, Nobel Laureate Octavio Paz bespeaks the importance of poetry in our contemporary society. He contends that during classical times poetry provided an ethical code that significantly influenced the organization of society and government. Greek citizens memorized lines of Homer, Hebrew leaders quoted passages from the Torah and the Psalms, Roman Senators learned verse from the Aeneid, and Chinese emperors recited poems from the Shih Ching. “Our classics, apart from their being examples of formal perfection and sources of spiritual pleasure, were teachers of political wisdom for two millennia” (Paz 105). …

The Early Poetry Of Pablo Neruda: A Study Of Temuco As An Inspirational Source, James Krause, Dr. Ted Lyon Jan 2014

The Early Poetry Of Pablo Neruda: A Study Of Temuco As An Inspirational Source, James Krause, Dr. Ted Lyon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, whose pseudonym was to be Pablo Neruda, was born in the small Chilean town, Parral. His mother died two months after she gave birth to her son and two years later, Neruda’s father moved his small family to Temuco. After the Chilean military defeated the local Mapuche Indians, Temuco and the entire Araucano region was opened to settlers. With the extension of the railroad, Temuco soon became a bustling pioneer town. Many historians and literary experts have compared early 20th century Temuco to Frontier Oregon. Although Temuco was considered to be the “Far West” of Chile …

Nineteenth Century Mormon Poetry, Samuel S. Harkness, Dr. Richard H. Cracroft Jan 2014

Nineteenth Century Mormon Poetry, Samuel S. Harkness, Dr. Richard H. Cracroft

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I still recall the day over four years ago when a General Authority proclaimed the LDS hymnal to be a ‘book of scripture.’ His seemingly bold declaration surprised me; but after reconsideration, it made sense. Some of the most spiritual times in my life have been accompanied by these “songs of the heart” (Doctrine and Covenants 45) Thus, the Preface of the hymnal reads, “Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns” (First Presidency ix). From then on, I viewed the hymns in a different light.
