To examine the influence of haiku in contemporary American poetry, the discussion includes west coast fi-ee verse poets whose work draws from Basho's haiku in different ways.

Translations And Migrations Of The Poetic Diary: Roy Kiyooka’S Wheels, Judy Halebsky
Collected Faculty Scholarship
Formal aspects of haiku inform Roy Kiyooka’s 1969 travel journal Wheels. In contrast to earlier scholarship, this study differentiates haiku traditions in Japan from English language haiku in North America. This framework reveals how Kiyooka employs select aspects of haiku practice to voice his othered cultural location.

In this poem, the speaker is talking to his dog about a tune whose notes bent life into the perpetual question - a grasping, a condemnation, where the cure was part Coltrane, part Miles, and part love.

This is a poetry collection divided into two parts. “North Street” is a sequence of poems that investigates the intersection of solitude and fear. “The Tinder Poems or Encounters of Another Kind” is a sequence that uses sexual experiences as a catalyst to explore the collision of power, love, and cultural expectation.
Mourning Lions And Penelope’S Revenge, Corinne Ondine Pache
Mourning Lions And Penelope’S Revenge, Corinne Ondine Pache
Classical Studies Faculty Research
This paper focuses on the simile comparing Penelope to a lion encircled by men in Odyssey 4.791–94. Lion similes in Homeric poetry typically depict warriors in combat situations and so the description of Penelope as a trapped predator facing battle is surprising. The encircled beast of the simile is in a dangerous situation, but the lion’s plight is left unresolved as Penelope falls asleep. Many critics note the connection between Penelope the lion and Odysseus, who is compared to the same animal on five occasions in the poem, most notably in Books 22 and 23 after he slaughters the suitors. …

The Truth About Parmenides' Doxa, Christopher Kurfess
The Truth About Parmenides' Doxa, Christopher Kurfess
Ancient Greek and Roman Studies Faculty Publications
In a recent article in this journal, Néstor-Luis Cordero has offered an interesting account of how scholars may have been misreading Parmenides' poem for centuries, as well as some provocative suggestions on how to correct that misreading. He calls into question the prevalent notion of the Doxa as Parmenides' account of the phenomenal world, and he challenges the standard arrangement of the fragments that assigns lines featuring 'physical' topics to that portion of the poem. The 'Doxa of Parmenides', if that phrase is understood to imply that Parmenides himself embraced doxai of any kind is, Cordero claims, an imaginary …

The Poetry Of Wilmer Mills, Rachael Acheson
The Poetry Of Wilmer Mills, Rachael Acheson
Theses and Dissertations
This paper seeks to contextualize the work of Wilmer Mills, a late, minor Southeastern American poet, within the complex and frequently misread tradition of New Formalism, as this manifested in the United States shortly after World War II. The analysis places Mills‟s work in conversation with the formalist philosophy of former U.S. Poet Laureate Richard Wilbur, and it suggests that both Mills‟s poetry and his reception amongst fellow academics who adhered to a more progressive philosophy demonstrates the continued relevance of this older, less-often discussed strain of formalism in American poetry. An appendix presents the first checklist of Mills‟s published …

This collection stems from the tradition of poetry of witness / anthro-poetry, and chronicles the lives of individuals within communities who are affected by racism, ignorance, and Americanization. The catalyst for this collection was the massive influx of immigrant children fleeing South and Central American, and Mexico to the United States in the summer of 2014. This event spurred a whirlwind of anger, confusion, and racism, which left children in the political crossfire. Thus, this collection is aptly titled La Gente Entre Nosotros / The People Between Us.
In this collection, I take the approach of the anthro-poet, to document …
