When Imagination And Metaphor Soar: Poets As Writing Center Directors, Julie Moore, Shanna Powlus Wheeler
When Imagination And Metaphor Soar: Poets As Writing Center Directors, Julie Moore, Shanna Powlus Wheeler
East Central Writing Centers Association 2019 Conference
We, Julie Moore and Shanna Powlus Wheeler, as published poets and writing center directors, propose a presentation in which we explore how we became “mindful of the relationship between creative work and academic work” (Bouquet and Eodice 4). Using the relationship between Dayton neighbors Paul Laurence Dunbar and the Wright brothers as inspiration, we will draw upon Wendell Berry’s argument that science and art are not “inherently at odds with one another . . . Manuscript Collection Finding Aids
Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3379. Christmas cards and letters to WKU faculty member Frances Richards from Cotton Noe, first Poet Laureate of Kentucky. Each includes a poem by Noe, but in his 1950 letter he advises Richards that he will be discontinuing this forty-year-long custom. He describes his activities with a poetry guild in Los Angeles, California, and recalls their friendship. Includes Noe’s obituary from the Louisville Courier-Journal and a 1969 clipping from the same paper about Noe.

THE JUNK THAT 8 K-TOWN (View-Master Haiku Series 1, 2 & 3)
My first session taking photos of bush junk near the K-Town train station led to an addiction. I started to see things within images that aroused deeper contemplation. The miniature Eiffel Tower within one landscape seemed to expertly align with a gasping car belly that paid homage to Peter Dam’s The Dogs That 7 Sparrows.
Absent past owners became unconscious artists. Objects in their adopted environments became creatures with lives beyond previous incarnations. I saw things as representations, serendipitous alignments, but more importantly, a culture addicted to …
