A Suggested Technique For The Selection Of Poems To Be Used In The Junior High School, May Pauline Potter

This study attempts to suggest a valuable and practical method of selecting poems for use in junior high School literature courses. It is largely a curriculum study, based upon that recognized method of curriculum construction: an analysis of existing opinions and research results. Opinions were assembled, not only from expert educators in the several fields related to the study, but also from junior high school pupils themselves. The study is divided into three parts: first, the development of a technique for the selection of poems; second, the validation of that technique in the light of pupil interest; and third, the …

This study has attempted to do three things: (1) to select historical poems to be used as supplementary material for teaching American History in the elementary and secondary schools; (2) to determine whether pupils think the selected poems add interest or understanding to their reading of American History; and (3) to determine the grade or school level at which each poem selected should be used.

Creation was once a prerogative of the gods. For ages the magic word "genius" served as a harrier to isolate from the common man that one in whom burned the spark of constructive originality. In the past we have never considered the possibility of his being one of the teeming throng who Invade our classrooms daily; or having given way to such an absurdity, we have hastily dismissed the Idea, feeling that, if he were, his presence would surely be announced by the choir invisible or some other divine agency.

Anna Fisher of McHenry, Kentucky attended WKU and graduated in the Class of 1932. This scrapbook includes unique items not found elsewhere in the University Archives collections including a homecoming poster for WKU vs University of Louisville football game and game program for WKU vs Cumberland College, 1928. Anna Fisher went on to teach at Bunker Hill in Equality, Kentucky. A scrapbook she kept during those years “Memories of Bunker Hill School, 1929-1930” is also available in the Kentucky Library Call # SBK166.
