Countering Social Encounters: Darwish’S “Speech Of The Red Indian”, J. Kristen Urban

The Journal of Social Encounters

In June 2025 the Washington D.C. Arab Center held a conference at the National Press Club titled, “A Historic Juncture: Israel’s Destruction of Gaza and the Palestinian Future.”  The discussion sparked an incisive question: Would such a future follow a Palestinian-owned trajectory?  Incisive, because Palestinians have not owned their trajectory since the 1915 Sykes-Picot Agreement, have consistently been defined in negative terms, and have lived with the ambiguity of existing while remaining unrecognized.  Growing up within Israel, Palestine’s national poet, Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008), experienced this paradox firsthand, and explored it directly in “Speech of the Red Indian,” a poem written …

Fana’ (Annihilation), Houyar Moghaddas Feb 2026

Fana’ (Annihilation), Houyar Moghaddas

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

In Sufism, fana’ refers to the dissolution of the self, the annihilation of the ego as one transcends individuality. While traditionally a spiritual concept, fana’ also offers a powerful humanistic metaphor for psychological transformation. In both the poem and accompanying photograph, fana’ explores the themes of ego death, grief, and the reshaping of identity: processes central to psychiatric practice, psychedelic therapy and the treatment of emotional fragmentation. The photograph captures an individual standing at the edge of a path, facing an untamed landscape, symbolizing the confrontation with the unknown self and the internal experience of surrender. This work invites reflection …

Cecil Taylor, 1950–1976: Theory & Practice In His Own Words, Michelle A. Yom Feb 2026

Cecil Taylor, 1950–1976: Theory & Practice In His Own Words, Michelle A. Yom

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Cecil Taylor (1929–2018) was a poet, composer, pianist, and dancer who is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of Free Jazz. Despite this historical significance, Taylor has not been a subject of substantial archival research. Some scholars have written his name into music scholarship through explicitly or implicitly reiterating the notion of “freedom” that circulated among contemporary jazz critics of the late 1950s and the 1960s. Others have focused on analyzing Taylor’s solo piano music, often reducing Taylor’s musical theories and practices into the formal structures of the music itself. To date, the scholarship has simplified Taylor’s work …

Yet No Ramanujan, Db Jonas Jan 2026

Yet No Ramanujan, Db Jonas

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The poem Yet No Ramanujan conveys the musings of a layman in his garden, obsessed by the way that mundane things, the small experiences of everyday life, suggest the ways in which, as Baudelaire says, "everything is number." This meditation ends with the recognition that the putative stability of a self, a thinking subject, is after all, however complex and unique, like all matter, a kind of oscillation, a complex product of number.

Beyond Black And White: Embracing Every Hue Through Words, Stories, And Unapologetic Truths, Darius M. Phelps

New Jersey English Journal

Literacy shapes how students interpret and engage with the world, yet traditional education often compartmentalizes it. This article explores racial literacy and poetry as transformative, interdisciplinary tools for critical inquiry and identity formation. Grounded in scholarship and practical strategies, it calls for reimagining literacy instruction as empowerment across disciplines and lived experiences.

Life, Death And The Aftermath, Charlotte E. Smith Jan 2026

Life, Death And The Aftermath, Charlotte E. Smith

Masters Theses

This research analyzes McClocklin and Lengelle's 'Cures for the Heart': A Poetic Approach to Healing After Loss." It finds that poetry therapy may offer a healthy outlet for processing grief. Further research supports the therapeutic benefits in writing and reading poetry as a way to cope, find meaning, and make sense of it all, after the loss occurs. My thesis is a collection of 49 poems, in which I chronicle the life of my adult son, Justin, who struggled with an opioid addiction and passed away due to an overdose in the Spring of 2025. My work was inspired by …

O Esqueleto De Um Romance, Lanna Leite Jan 2026

O Esqueleto De Um Romance, Lanna Leite

Theses and Dissertations

In O Esqueleto de um Romance: The Film (2025), a Berlin legal dispute between a mayor and evangelicals sparks filmmaker Lanna Leite’s reflection on faith, memory, and belief. Using archival, 16mm, and 8mm footage, the experimental film frames filmmaking as an ephemeral, performative practice resisting closure and conventional narrative finality.

Showpony, George Theodore Ellington Jan 2026

Showpony, George Theodore Ellington

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

The poetry collection Showpony focuses on the real-life experiences of a woman in her twenties during the 1970s, who is treated by psychiatrist Dr. Robert J. Stoller at UCLA in a desperate attempt to make her normal. Mrs. G struggles with homicidal and suicidal thoughts, psychosis, as well as her homosexuality and transgender identity. Showpony examines the ways in which psychology has pathologized these experiences and the ramifications for patients, particularly those who have been publicly showcased as examples of their conditions used to train future students. The collection critiques the exploitation of patients by psychiatrists and psychologists, highlighting unethical …

Reimagining Emily Dickinson And Rupi Kaur’S Techniques For A Contemporary Creative Portfolio, Julia S. Gearing Jan 2026

Reimagining Emily Dickinson And Rupi Kaur’S Techniques For A Contemporary Creative Portfolio, Julia S. Gearing

ENG 490 Senior Seminar Capstone

This thesis combines literary analysis and creative practice to examine how notorious poet Emily Dickinson and up and coming Rupi Kaur have shaped the genre of poetry over time and can influence a novice writer, such as myself. Through close reading and analysis of Dickinson and Kaur’s work this thesis identifies key stylistic and thematic elements and uses my findings to influence original poetry, with the goal of experimenting and expanding upon the use of craft within my writing. This project demonstrates how critical analysis of other successful authors can inform creative expression and broaden the literary realm.

Breaking The Silence: The Intersection Of Neuropsychology, Storytelling, And Mental Health Stigma, Judiene S. Gordon

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis unites the disciplines of neuropsychology and creative writing to explore the complexities of mental health stigma, with a particular focus on substance use. Through a collection of original poems and short fiction, the project seeks to illuminate the lived experiences of individuals affected by these issues and challenge prevailing misconceptions and stereotypes. Drawing on accounts from individuals who have experience with mental illness and substance use, the creative work integrates psychological insight, personal narrative, and authentic voices to foster empathy and understanding. By merging scientific awareness with artistic expression, this thesis aims to humanize often-stigmatized experiences and contribute …

After All, Megan Russell

The Utah English Journal

After all the voices of the day have quieted down,

I think.

After all the pencils have been lost, some sharpened

to nubs, others scattered through the hall,

I wonder.

After all the paper has been crumpled and used up,

I ponder.

The Revelations, Lily Mckenna Jan 2026

The Revelations, Lily Mckenna

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

The Revelations is a self-actualization in the form of a poetry collection. The speaker’s realization that reality is relative arrives through a Title IX case against an abusive boyfriend and former bandmate. Poems such as “Complainant / Respondent” use rigid legal structures to investigate the fluidity of truth and perception and how they can be manipulated. With her band on hiatus and the case propelling her into a new world, the speaker starts running DIY shows alongside a cast of characters with a shared love of music. She interrogates their realities in the character studies “On The Relative Reality Of…,” …
