Reduced Kinetic Modelling Of Reactive Oxygen And Nitrogen Species Formation In Microwave Plasma Jets, Hayder M. Hadi, Abdul Hussain A. Khadyair, Hamid Al-Jibbouri

Baghdad Science Journal

Cold atmospheric-pressure microwave plasma jets are crucial sources of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) in the fields of biomedicine, environment, and industry. A reduced kinetic model has been constructed to model RONS production in microwave-driven plasma jets at different process parameters in this paper. The model employs a simplified system of coupled ordinary differential equations representative of the dominant plasma-chemical reactions to characterize the time evolution of six high-interest species (OH, O, O3, NO, NO2, and H2O2). The influence of gas composition, gas flow rate, surface humidity, and microwave power on …

Measuring Cosmic Expansion From Early To Late Times Using Quasars, Galaxies, & Local Supernovae, Rajeev Vaisakh Aug 2026

Measuring Cosmic Expansion From Early To Late Times Using Quasars, Galaxies, & Local Supernovae, Rajeev Vaisakh

Physics Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the evolution of cosmic expansion across a wide redshift ($z$) range by combining measurements from quasars \& galaxies in the distant universe $(z > 0.8)$ with those obtained from stripped-core collapse supernovae observations from the nearby universe $(z < 0.1)$. Using the DESI spectroscopic survey, we analyze large-scale clustering from quasars over $0.8 < z < 2.1$ and emission line galaxies over $0.8 < z < 1.6$, contributing to DESI DR2 BAO and full-shape measurements of cosmic expansion and structure growth. Combined with BBN in flat $\Lambda$CDM, DESI DR2 BAO gives $H_0 = 68.51 \pm 0.58$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, while combinations of DESI BAO with CMB and supernova data show a preference for evolving dark energy, with representative constraints such as $w_0 = -0.752 \pm 0.057$ and $w_a = -0.86^{+0.23}_{-0.20}$ for DESI+CMB+DESY5. Using the ROTSE-III Supernova Survey and the expanding photosphere method (EPM), we measure distances to a sample of six supernovae for which the thermal phase can be clearly identified. This analysis focuses on testing whether reliable EPM distances can be obtained for this population. The resulting distances will eventually be compared with independent estimates from the literature. Establishing consistency with these external measurements represents an important step toward applying this methodology to larger samples, with the eventual goal of using ROTSE supernova distances to provide an independent measurement of the local Hubble constant.

Pedersen By Proxy: Neutral Wind Drivers Of The Magnetosphere, Shreya Gandhi Jun 2026

Pedersen By Proxy: Neutral Wind Drivers Of The Magnetosphere, Shreya Gandhi

Physics and Astronomy Undergraduate Senior Theses

Measurements of Saturn’s radio and magnetic periodicities suggest that atmospheric forcing influences the magnetosphere-coupled current systems on the planet (Gurnett et al., 2007). A proposed mechanism for this phenomenon is that thermospheric heating drives strong neutral winds which drag ionospheric plasma and generate currents that close along magnetic field lines (Smith, 2011). However, the local current-closure physics of these processes is di!cult to isolate in global Saturn models even if they suggest neutral wind forcing is a plausible driver for these changes (Jia et al., 2012). This thesis uses the Earth-based auroral GEMINI (Geospace Environment Model of Ion-Neutral Interactions) model …

From Process Retrieval To Understanding: A Look Into Curiosity And Metacognition In My Physics Classrooms, Nahuel Acosta Burroso May 2026

From Process Retrieval To Understanding: A Look Into Curiosity And Metacognition In My Physics Classrooms, Nahuel Acosta Burroso

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

In the modern high school physics classroom, the rapid proliferation of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has created a unique educational challenge. While these tools can solve complex problems quickly, they often lead to cognitive offloading, where students bypass the internal dialogue and deep thinking needed for true understanding. This project follows an action research journey that shifts the focus from restricting technology to cultivating curiosity and metacognition. I define curiosity as the gap identifier that appears when a student realizes they do not know something, while metacognition acts as the navigator that helps them decide what to do next. By …

Distance Calculations Of Faint Dwarf Galaxies Through Surface Brightness Fluctuations, Blake A. Richesin, Guinevere Herron, Burçin Mutlu-Pakdil

Wetterhahn Science Symposium Posters

This study aims to test the effectiveness of the surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) technique in determining the distance to three distinct galaxy targets. The targets were dwarf galaxies Tucana B, Kamino, and Hedgehog. The technique used image masking, Sérsic profiles, and convolving with point spread functions (PSF). The study showed that redder, quenched galaxies are prime candidates for the SBF technique, while bluer, star-forming galaxies are more difficult to constrain the distance of.

An Analytical Framework For Quantifying Urban And Community Resilience To Natural Hazards From Cell-Phone Gps-Location And Traffic-Flow Data, Georgios Chatzikyriakidis May 2026

An Analytical Framework For Quantifying Urban And Community Resilience To Natural Hazards From Cell-Phone Gps-Location And Traffic-Flow Data, Georgios Chatzikyriakidis

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Urban areas are increasingly exposed to natural hazards while accommodating a growing share of the global population, yet a consistent science-based framework for quantifying urban and community resilience remains lacking. This dissertation develops a physics-based analytical framework grounded in statistical mechanics and the quantitative theory of Brownian motion. A city is conceptualized as a complex medium in which citizens move analogously to Brownian particles within a viscoelastic environment, influenced by socioeconomic interactions and infrastructure functionality.

A central premise is that urban resilience, interpreted as engineering resilience (an outcome), can be quantified through a single metric: the mean-square displacement MSD=⟨r²(t)⟩, of …

Establishing A Comprehensive Framework For Sfrt Lattice Treatments: Optimization, Planning, And Clinical Evaluation, Gregory M. Gill May 2026

Establishing A Comprehensive Framework For Sfrt Lattice Treatments: Optimization, Planning, And Clinical Evaluation, Gregory M. Gill

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Spatially fractionated radiation therapy (SFRT) using lattice radiotherapy (LRT) has emerged as a promising treatment technique for bulky, nonresectable tumors by delivering spatially heterogeneous dose distributions consisting of high-dose vertices embedded within lower-dose regions. Although early clinical experiences have demonstrated potential therapeutic benefit, widespread clinical implementation of LRT remains limited due to the absence of standardized treatment planning workflows, consistent optimization strategies, and clearly defined evaluation metrics for heterogeneous dose distributions. The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate a structured framework to support efficient, reproducible, and safe clinical implementation of LRT.

To address these challenges, a comprehensive …

Phase Identification Of (La, Sr)Coo3 Solid Oxide Cell Electrode Films Using Dft Based Exafs, Musab A. Siddiqui May 2026

Phase Identification Of (La, Sr)Coo3 Solid Oxide Cell Electrode Films Using Dft Based Exafs, Musab A. Siddiqui

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Perovskite structured mixed ionic electronic conductor (MIEC) materials formed as films by metal-organic precursor deposition have excellent electrochemical performance in solid oxide cell (SOC) air electrode applications due to the large surface area provided by the manufacturing approach. MIEC films created by metal organic precursor deposition are often multi-phased due to low heat treatment temperatures and locally generated low oxygen partial pressures caused by the release of carbonaceous gases during the drying step of the fabrication process. In this work, we use extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) to examine the phase contents of La0.8Sr0.2CoO3 (LSC82) and La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 (LSC64) …

A Guided Curriculum Approach To Supporting Critical Thinking And Mathematical Readiness In Ib Physics, Samantha Killeen

Masters Projects

The purpose of this project is to address the problem that many students lack the critical thinking and mathematical reasoning skills required to be successful in rigorous STEM courses like IB Physics. While students may perform well in mathematics courses, they often struggle to transfer those skills into physics contexts that require conceptual understanding and problem-solving. These challenges have been intensified by academic tracking in mathematics pathways, post-pandemic learning loss, and increased dependence on technology, which have reduced the opportunities for productive struggle in the classroom. As a result, students frequently enter IB Physics unprepared for the pace and rigor …

Evaluating The Nuclear Structure Of Some Calcium Mirror Nuclei, Sukaina Falah Hassan, Ban Sabah Hameed Apr 2026

Evaluating The Nuclear Structure Of Some Calcium Mirror Nuclei, Sukaina Falah Hassan, Ban Sabah Hameed

Baghdad Science Journal

In this study, we calculated the binding energy of nuclei, which holds atomic nuclei together, by utilizing electron scattering transformations in the shell model to explore the nuclear structure for proton-rich pairs of mirror nuclei: 34Ca-34Si, 0Ca-35P, 36Ca-36S, and 37Ca-37Cl. The proton envelope that surrounds the proton-rich nucleus explains why the nucleus charge and its mirror image have different radii. The wave functions for single particles were adopted from the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approximation and Wood-Saxon potential to compute the mirror radii, mirror charge radii, and skin thickness for protons …

Study The Effect Of Isospin Dependence And Short-Range Correlations By Using Contact Formalism Through Inclusive Nuclear Structure For 20Ne And 24Mg Nuclei, Farah Faris Kaddoori, Ghaith N. Flaiyh

Baghdad Science Journal

Pair densities and their related correlation functions play a crucial role in capturing the complex many-body interactions within nuclear systems. This study focuses on how spin and isospin specifically influence nuclear charge density distributions. Using the folding model, the charge density is derived through an effective two-body density approach that incorporates both short-range correlations (SRC’s) and tensor correlations (TC’s), while also accounting for spin- and isospin-dependent forces. Calculations were carried out for the elastic electron scattering form factors, F(q), and the root-mean-square (RMS) charge radii, ⟨r²⟩¹ᐟ², of the ²⁰Ne and ²⁴Mg nuclei. The study also examined inelastic longitudinal electron …

Time And Actual Infinity In Aristotle's Physics, Atanas Georgiev Iliev Apr 2026

Time And Actual Infinity In Aristotle's Physics, Atanas Georgiev Iliev

Classics Undergraduate Senior Theses

This thesis examines the relationship between the existence of infinity and the nature of time as presented in Aristotle’s Physics, arguing that his two theories come into tension at two points. The Introduction sets out the purpose and methodology of the study and offers an overview of the historical reception and influence of Aristotle’s teaching on the infinite. Chapter I outlines this teaching, examining Aristotle’s reasons for categorising instances of the infinite through several dichotomies, most notably the distinction between actual and potential existence, before presenting his arguments for rejecting the existence of an actual infinity. Chapter II turns to …

Machine Learning In Fundamental Physics: From Early Universe Signatures To Qcd Evolution, Brandon Stevenson Apr 2026

Machine Learning In Fundamental Physics: From Early Universe Signatures To Qcd Evolution, Brandon Stevenson

Physics Theses and Dissertations

In both cosmology and small-x quantum chromodynamics, the relevant theoretical predictions are well-defined but expensive to evaluate repeatedly over broad parameter spaces or large ensembles of simulated data. The central question of this thesis is when machine learning can accelerate those calculations without weakening the reliability of the final physics conclusions. The thesis develops and tests this idea in three settings. First, it studies the Derivative Approximation for Likelihoods (DALI) as a means of diagnosing when Fisher-matrix forecasts cease to be trustworthy in cosmological parameter inference. Second, it investigates graph-based spherical neural networks for estimating primordial non-Gaussianity directly from simulated …

Searching For Temporal Variations In The Fine-Structure Constant Using Espresso Spectrograph Data, David Hoffman Iv Apr 2026

Searching For Temporal Variations In The Fine-Structure Constant Using Espresso Spectrograph Data, David Hoffman Iv

Senior Theses

The fine-structure constant α is a dimensionless constant, defined as e²/(4πε₀ℏc) ≈ 1/137. On the order of human timescales, its value is very much unchanging, however, in recent years there has been extensive debate over whether or not the value of α has remained constant over cosmological timescales. With the natural corollary to a changing α being that either one or multiple of its constituent physical constants have also changed in value, observing a variation in the fine-structure constant would have vast ramifications for our understanding of the nature of the early universe and how it has evolved. While past …

Colorimetric Detection Of Mercury (Ii) Ions Utilizing Bio-Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized Via Microwave-Assisted Method With Matoa Leaf Extract, Ari Sulistyo Rini, Yolanda Rati, Gilar Adnan Ramadhan, Yan Soerbakti, Lazuardi Umar

Baghdad Science Journal

In this work, bio-colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using Matoa (Pometia pinnata) leaf extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent under microwave irradiation to promote rapid AgNPs formation. The influence of microwave irradiation powers (360, 540, and 720 W) on the optical, structural, and morphological properties of the synthesized AgNPs was systematically investigated. The AgNPs formation was characterized by yellowish-brown colloids formation with surface plasmon resonant (SPR) bands centered around 430 nm, as detected by UV-Vis spectroscopy. FTIR analysis revealed the presence of C-H and O-H functional groups from polyphenols and flavonoids in Ag+ ion reduction. …

Influence Of Beryllium Substitution On Vibrational And Electronic Properties Of Carbon Nano-Cone: Density Functional Theory, Rajaa K. Mohammad, Hussein M. L., Ammar S. Hameed, Luma M. Ahmed, Shurooq Sabah Abed Al-Abbas

Baghdad Science Journal

Density Functional Theory (DFT) was employed to investigate the effects of beryllium (Be) substitution on the vibrational and electronic properties of a single-wall carbon nano-cone. The study aims to clarify how Be incorporation modifies the structural stability and electronic characteristics of this nanostructure. Electronic parameters including ionization potential (I), electron affinity (Eea), Fermi energy (Ef), HOMO–LUMO energies, total energy (E), and band gap (Eg) were calculated. Infrared (IR) spectra, optimized geometries, electrostatic potential maps, and electron density distributions were also analyzed. The results indicate that Be substitution reduces the ionization potential while increasing the electron affinity. Incorporation of Be atoms …

Extension Of The Local Vibrational Mode Theory To Periodic Systems, Filippo Bodo Mar 2026

Extension Of The Local Vibrational Mode Theory To Periodic Systems, Filippo Bodo

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

Over the years, vibrational spectroscopy was used to gain a deeper understanding of the electronic structure and the chemical bond in both molecular and periodic systems. In this framework, the Local Vibrational Mode Theory (LVMT), as first introduced by Konkoli and Cremer in 1998, provides a unique tool to quantify the strength of a chemical bond, and better interpret the molecular vibrational spectra, thanks to the adiabatic force constants ($k^a$) and the composition of normal modes (CNM). While LVMT was originally developed for molecular systems, its application to periodic solids has remained limited. This thesis presents a complete and systematic …

Optimization Of Surface Plasmon Resonance (Spr) For Gold/Air Interface By Using Kretschmann Configuration, Yadgar Shwan, Berun Ghafoor, Govar Hamasalih Mar 2026

Optimization Of Surface Plasmon Resonance (Spr) For Gold/Air Interface By Using Kretschmann Configuration, Yadgar Shwan, Berun Ghafoor, Govar Hamasalih

Engineering and Technology Journal

The coherent oscillation of electrons at contact among a dielectric and metal when the metal is exposed to incoming plasmon is known as “surface Plasmon resonance”. To achieve the best surface plasmon resonance (SPR) signal, several aspects must be considered, including the excitation wavelength, the sort of metals used, and the thickness of the metal layer. The modification of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) depending on the thickness of metallic gold was investigated in this study. The reflection spectrum is determined as a function of metal thickness and dielectric medium (air), which is fixed in this case, and measuring the …

Investigating The Viability Of Fully Online Asynchronous Physics Instruction In Formal Education, Clifton W. Massey-Noel

Physics Dissertations

In this dissertation we present results from two consecutive investigations into the fully online asynchronous modality in Physics Education. We first discuss the efficacy of a fully online asynchronous section of Modern Physics held in Fall 2024. The asynchronous section is compared with four prior partially-flipped sections of the same class, two of which were held in-person, and two of which were held synchronously online. Results suggest that all three modalities can be made to be about equally as effective. We also discuss the efficacy of a fully online asynchronous section of Calculus-Based Introductory Mechanics held in Fall 2025. The …
