Modeling The Health Effects And Economic Costs Of Particulate Matter Emissions From High Volume Hydraulic Fracturing, Marissa Steinheimer May 2018

Modeling The Health Effects And Economic Costs Of Particulate Matter Emissions From High Volume Hydraulic Fracturing, Marissa Steinheimer

Theses

With natural gas drilling on the rise (Penn State, 2012), there is a general lack of data on the emissions from the entire lifecycle of hydraulic fracturing. This research project is designed to study the health impacts of emissions from high volume hydraulic fracturing (HVHF) production and at HVHF well sites. Using data from previous research (Korfmacher et al., 2015 and Korfmacher et al., 2016) and the Environmental Protections Agency's Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program - Community Edition (BenMAP-CE), estimated health impacts and economic costs of emissions are analyzed. This study models the health impacts and economic costs of …

An Evaluation Of Juvenile Lifers In Pennsylvania Pre And Post Act 33 Of 1995, Kieshia Martin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Act 33 of 1995 is an amendment to Pennsylvania's Juvenile Act (2008). This amendment changed jurisdictional boundaries for juvenile offenders who committed violent crimes with weapons. As a result, youth who committed violent crimes with weapons were automatically transferred to the adult criminal justice system. Using punctuated equilibrium as the theoretical foundation, the purpose of this study was to determine if Act 33, as a punctuating event, resulted in an increase in the number of youth transferred to the adult criminal justice system and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in an urban county in Pennsylvania. Secondary data …

Does One Size Fit All? The Importance Of State Natural Resource Damage Assessment Laws, Elizabeth Conti Jun 2017

Does One Size Fit All? The Importance Of State Natural Resource Damage Assessment Laws, Elizabeth Conti

Catholic University Law Review

Natural Resource Damage Assessments (NRDAs) are necessary for the purpose of ensuring restoration and revitalization to natural resources harmed or destroyed by environmental contaminations, whether natural or manmade. Many federal laws such as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), the Oil Pollution Act (OPA), and the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (CWA) are available to assess damages to natural resources. However, their effectiveness is limited due to factors such as lack of resources and funding, political intervention, and a multitude of damages to assess spread throughout the country. Many states have taken the lead in enacting NRDA …

Fracking In Pennsylvania: History, Geopolitics, And Public Health, Kathryn A. Susko May 2017

Fracking In Pennsylvania: History, Geopolitics, And Public Health, Kathryn A. Susko

Student Theses 2015-Present

Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is the extraction of natural gas from deep within the earth through invasive drilling. This thesis explores the history of fracking, the geopolitical motivations for fracking in Pennsylvania, and the health risks associated with working and living near the sites. Seen within the context of the history and availability of our nation’s natural resources, represents for energy companies an opportunity to extract large quantities of natural gas, yet these companies express contempt for citizens who suffer from the polluting effects of this industry and do not receive compensation. As for the geopolitics, there are evident geographical …

Assessing Growers' Challenges And Needs To Improve Wine Grape Production In Pennsylvania, Michela Centinari, Kathleen M. Kelley, Bryan Hed, Abigail Miller, Anouk Patel-Campillo Jun 2016

Assessing Growers' Challenges And Needs To Improve Wine Grape Production In Pennsylvania, Michela Centinari, Kathleen M. Kelley, Bryan Hed, Abigail Miller, Anouk Patel-Campillo

Journal of Extension

Pennsylvania wine grape growers were surveyed to obtain information on factors affecting varietal selection, challenges to production, and their perceptions of canopy management practices. Our survey revealed that participants perceived site as a key factor in varietal selection decisions and winter injury as the greatest challenge for their economic sustainability. Other issues limiting production and profitability were disease control, frost injury, and labor cost and availability. Participants recognized the importance of canopy management practices for reaching optimum wine quality but had concerns over the shortage and cost of labor to implement them. Mechanization of canopy management likely would increase adoption.

Assessment Of Risks And Benefits For Pennsylvania Water Sources When Utilizing Acid Mine Drainage For Hydraulic Fracturing, Frederick R. Davis May 2015

Assessment Of Risks And Benefits For Pennsylvania Water Sources When Utilizing Acid Mine Drainage For Hydraulic Fracturing, Frederick R. Davis

Master's Projects and Capstones

The use of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) in the hydraulic fracturing process increases the complexity of a polarizing topic. Many stakeholders see a potential to provide relief to multiple environmental problems while others see it as another threat to the Pennsylvania water supply so many parties depend on. This research will evaluate data from Pennsylvania state agencies and additional academic research regarding AMD and fracking to assess potential benefits, risks, and complications for Pennsylvania watersheds when using AMD in the fracking process.

Chapter 1 presents background information on energy demand and hydraulic fracturing, as well as energy sources and industrial …
