Hiring The Most Effective Teachers: An Examination Of Policy And Practice In Pennsylvania, Barbara Launi Powers
Hiring The Most Effective Teachers: An Examination Of Policy And Practice In Pennsylvania, Barbara Launi Powers
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Hiring the most effective teachers not only has an impact on America’s children, but on America’s economic future as well. For two decades, much research about the failings of America’s schools has been conducted. Since the advent of No Child Left Behind (2002), never has more focus been applied to teaching quality. Hiring the best teachers for our children leverages the single largest in-school influence on achievement. James Coleman, in his seminal work, The Coleman Report (1967), notes that a child’s home socio-economic status and race are more significant influences than any in-house school influence. Subsequent research on teacher quality …

A Plan For Pollinator Landscape Management On The Ursinus Campus, Megan N. Hanscom
A Plan For Pollinator Landscape Management On The Ursinus Campus, Megan N. Hanscom
Environment and Sustainability Honors Papers
Due to increased pollinator decline over the past decade, colleges and universities are developing pollinator management plans to help combat pollinator loss. Pollinators, and more specifically bees, are vital members of local ecosystems and protection efforts are greatly needed. This plan was created to address the needs of Ursinus College pollinators using relevant suggestions from pollinator research and existing protection plans. This plan includes suggestions for increased pollinator habitat on campus, ways to reduce pollinator stressors, and ways that the Ursinus community can positively impact pollinator health.

Urban Foraging Social Meetups In Philadelphia, Pa, Kristin G. Mcgillis
Urban Foraging Social Meetups In Philadelphia, Pa, Kristin G. Mcgillis
Environment and Sustainability Summer Fellows
Urban foraging is the practice in which city residents gather plants and plant parts from green spaces—such as parks, sidewalks, or yards—to use for a variety of reasons. Research on the practice is in its early stages, with key questions in need of further research, including who participates, why they participate, and how they initially engage the practice. Existing research suggests most foragers consume what they gather for food, however, many also use materials for medicinal or craft-related purposes. Foraging meet-up tours appear to be a popular way for urban dwellers to learn about and engage in this practice. This …

Assessment Of Risks And Benefits For Pennsylvania Water Sources When Utilizing Acid Mine Drainage For Hydraulic Fracturing, Frederick R. Davis
Assessment Of Risks And Benefits For Pennsylvania Water Sources When Utilizing Acid Mine Drainage For Hydraulic Fracturing, Frederick R. Davis
Master's Projects and Capstones
The use of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) in the hydraulic fracturing process increases the complexity of a polarizing topic. Many stakeholders see a potential to provide relief to multiple environmental problems while others see it as another threat to the Pennsylvania water supply so many parties depend on. This research will evaluate data from Pennsylvania state agencies and additional academic research regarding AMD and fracking to assess potential benefits, risks, and complications for Pennsylvania watersheds when using AMD in the fracking process.
Chapter 1 presents background information on energy demand and hydraulic fracturing, as well as energy sources and industrial …

The Path To The Land Conservancy Of Adams County, Mary Margaret Stewart
The Path To The Land Conservancy Of Adams County, Mary Margaret Stewart
English Faculty Publications
As part of this year's observation of Land Conservancy Month, board member and retired Gettysburg College English Department chair Mary Margaret Stewart has prepared an annotated bibliography of readings on land preservation, land conservation, and land trusts. Beginning with Henry David Thoreau and John Muir and extending through the works of Wendell Berry and Annie Dillard and on to a survey of books discussing the philosophy behind the land trust movement, Mary Margaret's bibliography is an outstanding resource for those who want to learn more about protecting our wild and undeveloped spaces.

Removing The Rust: Comparative Post-Industrial Revitalization In Buffalo, Cleveland, And Pittsburgh, Scott Nicholas Duryea
Removing The Rust: Comparative Post-Industrial Revitalization In Buffalo, Cleveland, And Pittsburgh, Scott Nicholas Duryea
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This study seeks to understand the differences in post-industrial redevelopment among the cities of Buffalo, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. Part of the so-called "rust belt," these three cities experienced industrial decline from the 1960s through the 1980s, largely as a result of the economic globalization of heavy industry. Intensive manufacturing and output had come to a screeching halt, unemployment skyrocketed, outmigration ensued, and each metropolitan area faced formidable challenges to convert to service-oriented industries. Over the past twenty years, these cities, and the regions that encompass them, have begun to redevelop, although unevenly. At a glance, the Pittsburgh region appears to …

Noble Gases Identify The Mechanisms Of Fugitive Gas Contamination In Drinking-Water Wells Overlying The Marcellus And Barnett Shales, Thomas H. Darrah, Avner Vengosh, Robert B. Jackson, Nathaniel R. R. Warner, Robert J. Poreda
Dartmouth Scholarship
Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have enhanced energy production but raised concerns about drinking-water contamination and other environmental impacts. Identifying the sources and mechanisms of contamination can help improve the environmental and economic sustainability of shale-gas extraction. We analyzed 113 and 20 samples from drinking-water wells overlying the Marcellus and Barnett Shales, respectively, examining hydrocarbon abundance and isotopic compositions (e.g., C2H6/CH4, δ13C-CH4) and providing, to our knowledge, the first comprehensive analyses of noble gases and their isotopes (e.g., 4He, 20Ne, 36Ar) in groundwater near shale-gas wells. We addressed two questions. (i) Are elevated levels of hydrocarbon gases in …

"Nature Is Pushing One Way And People Are Pushing The Other": A Political Ecology Of Forest Transitions In Western Montgomery County, Pa, Megan Elizabeth Maccaroni
Environment and Sustainability Honors Papers
Forests in Southeastern Pennsylvania have been shaped by a number of anthropocentric factors over the past century, with many areas experiencing a recent trend towards forest recovery. Studies on forest dynamics have shown that most developed regions exhibit a forest transition, which begins when land is cleared for natural resource extraction (e.g., agriculture, forestry) during an early development stage. Then as a population grows and food production needs are met, rural peoples begin to migrate to the city, and a feeling of scarcity of trees develops that may lead to changes in land management attitudes, and many formerly deforested areas …
