OBJECTIVE: Transportation barriers can lead to delays in care and suboptimal treatment. Our objective was to assess the utilization of a novel transportation pilot intervention in gynecologic oncology.
METHODS: Since May 2022, we have provided donor-funded transportation to patients receiving gynecologic cancer treatment at 5 University of Pennsylvania practices. Patients are screened for transportation barriers at first visit and re-screened during care. Patients who screen positive are referred to the intervention, a HIPAA-compliant ride-sharing service. There are no income or insurance restrictions; distance was limited to 25 miles. We report descriptive statistics on ride completion, distance traveled, and cost.
RESULTS: …

Nuclear Reactions: Making Sense Of The Accident At Three Mile Island, Jordan Emily Bennett
Nuclear Reactions: Making Sense Of The Accident At Three Mile Island, Jordan Emily Bennett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines the causes and consequences of the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island in March of 1979. First detailing the event, this thesis then examines activist narratives following the accident, with a particular focus on women’s “motherist” activism in the community outside the plant, before turning to questions of memory and the creation of a public memory of survivorship in the community surrounding the plant. In considering these questions, this thesis seeks to shed light on the differences between official and communal narratives of the accident in an effort to understand the impacts that the partial meltdown at …

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
IMPORTANCE: Despite published guidelines and a prevalence of pediatric hypertension of approximately 3%, less than 25% of affected children are identified, with 60% not receiving any intervention despite detection. Understanding the knowledge and perceptions of parents or caregivers and health care teams is crucial to identify factors that may contribute to these unacceptably low detection rates.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the knowledge and perceptions of parents and health care teams regarding pediatric hypertension to identify common themes contributing to low hypertension detection.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative study, interviewed parents of children diagnosed with hypertension who did not follow up …

Two Roads To Cornwall: The Cornwall, The Cornwall & Lebanon, And Gilded Age Rail Competition, Shane A. Keenan
Two Roads To Cornwall: The Cornwall, The Cornwall & Lebanon, And Gilded Age Rail Competition, Shane A. Keenan
Masters Theses
Historians have devoted much attention to the overbuilding and excessive competition among railroads in the 1880s. However, they have mostly focused on larger railroads like the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad (Reading). Smaller railroads like the Cornwall Railroad and the Cornwall & Lebanon Railroad are less well known but play an important part in that larger story. Both railroads ran between Lebanon, Pennsylvania and Cornwall, Pennsylvania. Their primary purpose was to ship iron ore from the mines in Cornwall. Few outside of Lebanon County or Lancaster County, Pennsylvania know about these two railroads, yet they are a …

Assessing A Small Summer Urban Heat Island In Rural South Central Pennsylvania, Danielle Doyle, Timothy W. Hawkins
Assessing A Small Summer Urban Heat Island In Rural South Central Pennsylvania, Danielle Doyle, Timothy W. Hawkins
The Geographical Bulletin
The development of cities potentially has a significant impact on climate. Buildings and infrastructure that replace natural vegetation often create new microclimates through changes in the energy balance associated with the built environment. The urban heat island effect, the phenomenon where air temperatures within an urban area are warmer than the surrounding rural areas, has been thoroughly examined for large urban areas. The purpose of this study is to determine the magnitude and extent of the urban heat island for a small urban area surrounded by agricultural land. Temperature data collected from several urban and rural locations over a four-month …

Assessing Land Use Changes Due To Natural Gas Drilling Operations In The Marcellus Shale In Bradford County, Pa, Claire A. Jantz, Hannah K. Kubach, Jacob R. Ward, Shawn Wiley, Dana Heston
The Geographical Bulletin
Extraction of natural gas from the Marcellus Shale formation began in the mid-2000s, and well pads and their associated infrastructure are now prominent fixtures throughout the Appalachian region. However, there is currently little research available to provide insight into its implications for land use and land cover change. In this case study of Bradford County, Pennsylvania, we used high-resolution aerial photography, land cover data, and well point data to quantify current and potential land use change as a result of gas drilling, as well as the types of land cover to be converted. Based on the number of permits held …

Imaging for prostate cancer defines the extent of disease. Guidelines recommend against imaging low-risk prostate cancer patients with a computed tomography (CT) scan or bone scan due to the low probability of metastasis. We reviewed imaging performed for men diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer across the Pennsylvania Urologic Regional Collaborative (PURC), a physician-led data sharing and quality improvement collaborative. The data of 10 practices were queried regarding the imaging performed in men diagnosed with prostate cancer from 2015 to 2022. The cohort included 13,122 patients with 3502 (27%) low-risk, 2364 (18%) favorable intermediate-risk, 3585 (27%) unfavorable intermediate-risk, and 3671 (28%) …
Cover Cropping: How Sustainability And Economics Can Work Hand In Hand, Emma Reyes
Cover Cropping: How Sustainability And Economics Can Work Hand In Hand, Emma Reyes
Business and Economics Summer Fellows
Research finds that over half of the agricultural lands worldwide have been moderately or severely affected by soil degradation (Kopittke et al., 2019). This problem is further heightened by the fact that many farmers are concerned about the profitability of sustainable practices. As a result, this may lead to an increase in the practice of more harmful conventional agricultural techniques if they continue to be considered more economically beneficial in comparison. This paper aims to see if the use of a specific sustainable practice known as cover cropping can help to increase the level of economic benefits farmers receive. Cover …
Utilization Of Mental Health Services At Domestic Violence Agencies In Pennsylvania, Kealsey Mcneil
Utilization Of Mental Health Services At Domestic Violence Agencies In Pennsylvania, Kealsey Mcneil
Social Work Student Research
In this research, I examined the use of mental health services at domestic violence (DV) programs in rural and urban Pennsylvania and agency size. I examined the needs, characteristics, and availability of mental health services for DV survivors across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I looked at DV service use from a variety of sources to provide a well-rounded understanding of the factors that contributed to mental health service use. I used three secondary data sources: the Lethality Assessment Program (LAP), Adequacies of Network of Services Provided to the Survivors of Domestic Violence in Pennsylvania–Phase II study, and data obtained from …
