Using Case-Method Pedagogy To Facilitate Audience Awareness, Vincent D. Robles
Using Case-Method Pedagogy To Facilitate Audience Awareness, Vincent D. Robles
Faculty Publications
Introduction: Technical and professional communication (TPC) instructors value audience awareness, using peer- and client-based projects to facilitate it. We explore how students’ audience awareness is facilitated by the case method, which presents students with a professional communication task within a workplace scenario.
Situating the case: Case-method research suggests including a detailed audience and situation, multiple genres, and multimedia. Few studies have explored how case materials facilitate students’ audience awareness.
About the case: A 12-week case that was consistent with case-method research asked students to respond to an engineering firm’s internal problem with a proposal and report. How the case was …

Reflections On Changing Pedagogy Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Kelly Kleinhans, Lauren E. Bland, Richard Dressler
Reflections On Changing Pedagogy Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Kelly Kleinhans, Lauren E. Bland, Richard Dressler
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
Augmentative and alternate communication (AAC) is a service delivery area in the field of speech-language pathology. Individuals with significant and complex communication impairments benefit when a speech-language pathologist develops a communication system that either replaces or augments traditional speech. AAC includes the use of assistive technology designed to represent language and produce voice output. The profession's credentialing body, the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, requires university training programs to document student's knowledge and skills in AAC for working with clients across the lifespan. The authors reflect on how pedagogy associated with AAC has been transformed over time by external influences like …
The Effects Of The Flipped Classroom Model On Students' Learning In A College English Class In Shanghai, China, Xiaoying Wei
The Effects Of The Flipped Classroom Model On Students' Learning In A College English Class In Shanghai, China, Xiaoying Wei
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
For many decades, college English teaching in China has been teacher-centered, mainly focusing on the enhancement of students’ four basic English language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with little attention paid to the cultivation of students’ higher order thinking skills (Tang, 2016; Wang, Xu, & Zhou, 2016). The teacher-centered teaching approach has led to the problem that after having learned English for many years, students cannot speak English fluently (Dai, 2001). There has been a call for promoting the student-centered teaching model in China (NACFLT, 2000). One relatively new approach to support student-centered active learning is flipped instruction …
Beating The Bamboozle: Literacy Pedagogy Design And The Technicality Of Sfl, Erika Matruglio
Beating The Bamboozle: Literacy Pedagogy Design And The Technicality Of Sfl, Erika Matruglio
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper explores the issue of metalanguage and writing instruction in the senior secondary curriculum. It reports on the use of a design based research collaboration between a very experienced teacher of Ancient History and a research team with the aim of improving literacy outcomes for a group of disadvantaged students. The case highlights some of the challenges implicated in this close work between educational linguistic theorists as language specialists and classroom practitioners as subject specialists. In particular, it raises the issue of how to provide already experienced teachers with a metalanguage to express their implicit knowledge about text more …
"Repossessing Her Self-Possession": A Lesson In Communal Pedagogy, Crystal Dekesha Harris
"Repossessing Her Self-Possession": A Lesson In Communal Pedagogy, Crystal Dekesha Harris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation uses historical and literary mediums to assign pedagogical skills and communal benefit to African American female subjugation and labor typically associated with turmoil, ignominy, and struggle. Accordingly, Black feminist commentary (Lorde) is in conversation with theories of pedagogy (hooks, Ladson-Billings, Dewey) as well as literary philosophy and criticism (Bakhtin, Baraka) about the particular ways each field of study contribute to the analysis of twentieth century African American literature but also provide specific methods for Black communities to construct, implement, and sustain educational principles throughout time. Using the term communal pedagogy, I argue that African American culture has an …
Literature In The World: A Critical Discourse Study Of World Literature Pedagogy, Elisa Cogbill-Seiders
Literature In The World: A Critical Discourse Study Of World Literature Pedagogy, Elisa Cogbill-Seiders
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
“Literature in the World” is a critical discourse analysis of world literature pedagogy in U.S. higher education. It investigates the ways discourse communities in higher education produce and shape the field of world literature. The dissertation begins by establishing and analyzing the generic conventions of university mission statements, finding they are primarily dominated by discourse on global learning. It follows with an analysis of world literature course descriptions from the same schools. World literature course descriptions alternatively replicate, resist, or subvert global learning discourses. The last chapter uses findings from the first two chapters to trace how university and instructor …

Building positive relationships with students and employing relevant pedagogy
informed by Community Cultural Wealth will undoubtedly contribute to a more engaged community of learners that are vested in their community and academics. Aronson and Laughter (2015) amongst many others, studied and analyzed over 200 studies on the topic of culturally relevant education (CRE), and found convincing results that speak to the academic outcomes that are consistently reached whenever teachers employ CRE in the classroom (Cammarota, 2014; Covarrubias, 2017; Gay, 2010; Ladson-Billings, 1995; Paris, 2012;
approaches have demonstrated success, they are not being practiced and replicated in many parts of the …
Skooz Be Hat’In: My Story Navigating And Negotiating Standard American English, Lisa M. Westbrooks
Skooz Be Hat’In: My Story Navigating And Negotiating Standard American English, Lisa M. Westbrooks
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
In most education systems, African American Vernacular English is not considered a language or variety of English and students who speak it are coerced into using Standard American English only. Using autoethnographic methodology I examine my personal language navigation and negotiation of Standard American English and the oppression of language and identity that accompanied it. I use storytelling to draw the reader into my childhood memories and the drifting away of my first language. As a young student and English as a Second Language teacher I have learned from these experiences and share strategies so that others may successfully reduce …

How does participating in ESDY 630: Language, Culture and Teaching in Secondary Schools class affect attitudes of the educators? How do educators co-construct the relationship between standards and culturally responsive teaching and learning? Data were gathered from five pre-service teachers in the University of Alaska Anchorage Master of Arts in Teaching program in a 2-credit Language, Culture, and Teaching in Secondary Schools class. …
Using The Rhetoric Of Video Games To Teach The Praxis Of Critical Analysis, Jeffrey B. Doyle
Using The Rhetoric Of Video Games To Teach The Praxis Of Critical Analysis, Jeffrey B. Doyle
Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown that video games can be successful at teaching concepts and skills to students at various grade levels. To explain how this might work, theoretical work is done to connect the concept of flow from psychology to procedural rhetoric. With the inclusion of Foucault’s theories of power, video games are shown to not be isolated experiences but connected to the power dynamics of society. In video games, these dynamics can be seen through the problematic portrayals of marginalized peoples as well as the hostile community that has developed online surrounding video games. To account for these issues, but …
Unraveling Identity Signifier Literacy: A Case Study Of First-Year Composition Students' Communication Practices, Bailey Mcalister
Unraveling Identity Signifier Literacy: A Case Study Of First-Year Composition Students' Communication Practices, Bailey Mcalister
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
Identity signifier literacy is defined as one’s ability to accurately read – via personal interactions or via visual, verbal, written, or digital communication – the signifiers others display in direct and indirect ways and interpret these signifiers to gain understanding of others’ identities. In this study, 22 first-year composition students were surveyed about their communication practices in order to see how their identity signifier literacies influence and are influenced by digital environments and composition. These results are meant to improve first-year composition pedagogy by making connections between students’ informal composition practices and their academic composition courses.

Voices Of Notators: Approaches To Writing A Score--Special Issue, Teresa L. Heiland
Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)
In this special issue of Voices of Notators: Approaches to Writing a Score, eight authors share their unique process of creating and implementing their approach to notating movement, and they describe how that process transforms them as researchers, analysts, dancers, choreographers, communicators, and teachers. These researchers discuss the need to capture, to form, to generate, and to communicate ideas using a written form of dance notation so that some past, present, or future experience can be better understood, directed, informed, and shared. They are organized roughly into themes motivated by relationships between them and their methodological similarities and differences. …
A Comparison Of The Effects Of Concept-Based And Grammar-Based Methods Of Instruction On The Acquisition Of The Subjunctive Among Heritage And Second Language Learners Of Spanish, Antoni Fernandez Parera
A Comparison Of The Effects Of Concept-Based And Grammar-Based Methods Of Instruction On The Acquisition Of The Subjunctive Among Heritage And Second Language Learners Of Spanish, Antoni Fernandez Parera
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the outcomes of two different types of instructional approaches on advanced second language (L2) learners and intermediate heritage language (HL) learners of Spanish. Two methodologically distinct pedagogical interventions were conducted: 1) MCE (Mindful Conceptual Engagement), derived from the principles set in Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of mind (SCT); and 2) Grammar-Based Instruction, which is based upon more traditional methods of instruction involving the description and practice of grammatical content (e.g., fill-in-the blank exercises). Both interventions focused on usage of the subjunctive in variable contexts where the indicative was possible, but with a subsequent change in meaning (e.g., Busco …
A Matter Of Value: Creative Writing Strategies And Their Transference To Composition, Brandy Dawn Clark
A Matter Of Value: Creative Writing Strategies And Their Transference To Composition, Brandy Dawn Clark
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Creative writing and composition seem to be taken, at least in the academic world, as separate and unequal entities. While there are many questions in the research and answers in the research as to why creativity is important, its practical application in the composition classroom is not readily discussed because there is not unanimous agreement as to if creative writing even belongs in the composition classroom. Practical application of creative writing in the composition classroom gives teachers the opportunity to see why it is important, to see why it is valuable, and to incorporate it into already meticulous class standards. …
Best Practice: Bringing The Elements Of Effective Practice To The College Writing Classroom, Jonathan Montgomery Green
Best Practice: Bringing The Elements Of Effective Practice To The College Writing Classroom, Jonathan Montgomery Green
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Studies of college writing students suggest that many students associate writing ability with innate talent rather than sustained, deliberate practice. As a result, these students may lack the motivation to improve their writing abilities, leading to a vicious cycle in which they come to increasingly resent writing as a curricular and extracurricular activity. This dissertation argues that the elements of effective practice as outlined by cognitive psychology are equally applicable to writing as they are to skills such as music and that convincing students of the “practice-ability” of writing may improve their motivation to improve their writing abilities.
The dissertation …
Inviting Mindful Silence Into Pedagogy: Supporting Agency, Voice, And Critical Engagement Through Silence, Sarah Lausch
Inviting Mindful Silence Into Pedagogy: Supporting Agency, Voice, And Critical Engagement Through Silence, Sarah Lausch
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Across pedagogical approaches, silence and speech are rarely recognized as equally important ways to demonstrate knowledge. Favoring speech in the classroom indicates a specific set of assumptions that shows what formal teaching and learning settings should look like. I will approach silence in this study as an opportunity to create space for silent voices and invisible notions of agency. Through an exhaustive literature search and interpretive review of how contemporary pedagogical approaches currently assess silence, I invite the concept of mindful silence into pedagogy as a way to better address the ways that silence - not just speech - can …
The Pedagogy Of Difference: Co-Producing Feminist Consciousness Across Borders, Patricia Mohammed
The Pedagogy Of Difference: Co-Producing Feminist Consciousness Across Borders, Patricia Mohammed
Journal of International Women's Studies
How has a movement built on the consciousness of sisterhood become so fragmented between the end of the 20th and into the second decade of the 21st century? As different political tendencies, widely varying economic conditions and cultural dissimilarities emerged in global struggles to achieve diverse visions of women’s and gender equality, the current feminist movement appears to be characterized by chasms between the east, west, north and south rather than viewed as a movement whose basic tenets are parallel across racial, geographic and social barriers. By looking at lived examples of confrontations, and through a deliberate process of self-reflexive …
Invention In The Age Of Innovation: Writing Studies, Creativity, And Social Change, Erick Piller
Invention In The Age Of Innovation: Writing Studies, Creativity, And Social Change, Erick Piller
Doctoral Dissertations
Creativity, innovation, disruption, and other such concepts have become central to much scholarly and popular literature on economics, entrepreneurship, and management. Other influential discourses—psychology, urban design, and higher education policy—have followed suit, taking a similar interest in these concepts. As a result, creativity has ascended to the status of something like a core cultural value—ubiquitous, always referred to positively, but frequently stripped of any specific meaning, or else understood in narrowly individualist and economic terms. With signs of “creativity creep” now appearing in composition studies, my dissertation examines other disciplines’ scholarship on creativity and related concepts and considers how creativity …
Linguistic Political Ecology With The Ngäbe Indigenous People Of Panama, Ginés A. Sánchez Arias
Linguistic Political Ecology With The Ngäbe Indigenous People Of Panama, Ginés A. Sánchez Arias
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Indigenous communities from all corners of the globe live in uncertain times. From the vantage point of their “remote" lands, they undergo some of globalization’s most harmful externalities. Their homes become increasingly harder to maintain as extractive industries, development schemes, clandestine land grabs, and national bureaucracies encroach creating new colonial lands. First by assimilation, and then integration, these processes systematically undermine indigenous culture and autonomy. In place of such destructive coloniality, indigenous societies shelter unique ecological and linguistic knowledge that continues to serve their progress. This research applies lessons learned from studying with Ngäbe communities of western Panama, towards a …

Diversity, Identification, And Rhetoric In Tech: On The Analysis Of Satirical Conference Talks, Bryan Knowles
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this thesis, I examine the rhetorical strategies in Jenn Schiffer’s satirical conference talks in which she comments upon her own tech community. In part, I consider her arguments under the theoretical lenses of Burke, Epicurus, and Camus, theories placed alongside the reflective writing of Ullman as a queer woman in that selfsame community. I also discuss the pedagogical opportunities of such an analysis–of tech conference talks in general–to the modern student in our technologically-connected age. Finally, in the long term, I plan to connect the outcomes of this project to a larger project in partial fulfillment of a doctorate …
Aesthetic Shapes Of Holocaust Literature And Pedagogical Applications, Kate A. Bonacorsi
Aesthetic Shapes Of Holocaust Literature And Pedagogical Applications, Kate A. Bonacorsi
All NMU Master's Theses
This project specifically examines three narratives that are part of the genre of Holocaust Literature: Elie Wiesel’s Night, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, and John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and the way in which each of these texts contributes to collective Holocaust memory and traumatic literature: as a memoir, graphic novel, and work of fiction, respectively. The paper draws on Anne Whitehead’s work on memory, as well as other trauma and memory theorists: Cathy Caruth, Pierre Nora, Maurice Halbwachs, and Marianne Hirsch to offer a close rhetorical and structural analysis of each text analyzed through a traumatic theoretical lens. …

On The Freedom To Be Opaque Monsters: Communist Pedagogy, Aesthetics, And The Sublime, Derek Ford
Education Studies Faculty publications
As social movements amplify across the globe, activists and researchers are increasingly interested in the pedagogies of revolutionary transformation. To provide a rich resource for political educators and organizers, this paper formulates what we call an (un)communicative communist pedagogy that is oriented against communicative capitalism. We show that there is a taut connection between capitalism and democracy that consists of a shared logic, pedagogy, and aesthetic that revolves around communication, inclusion, and transparency. Without grasping this aesthetic connection, anti-capitalist struggles are reduced to liberal reforms that end up reinforcing and deepening capitalist production relations. To break out of this trap, …

Pedagogical Education Practices In Communication Sciences And Disorders Phd Programs: A Pilot Study, Laura Smith-Olinde, Stanley K. Ellis
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to ascertain how research doctoral programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) characterize their own efforts to educate research doctoral students about teaching at the college/university level; and (2) whether and how programs introduce the “scholarship of teaching and learning” (SoTL) to PhD students. PhD program directors (N=69) were emailed a survey for descriptions of university teaching instruction and SoTL activities, with a 27.5% return rate (n=19). Quantitative and qualitative analyses were used. Identified themes included, “course or seminar”, “experiential” and “required”. One hundred per cent of respondents offer teaching experiences and …

Legal Education En Español: A Pedagogical Model, Jayesh Rathod
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Law schools in the United States are pursuing various strategies to prepare their graduates to compete in a global marketplace for jobs. One such strategy is the development of courses and programs designed to equip law graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to serve as effective bilingual advocates. As part of this effort, in recent years, teachers and scholars have engaged in curricular experimentation and ongoing theorizing about the optimal methods and approaches for bilingual legal education. This essay builds upon existing theoretical work and outlines a unique, bilingual instructional model that involves adding an optional credit hour – …
Composition Pedagogy For The 21st Century : A Culturally Inclusive Model, Stephanie Hassan Richardson
Composition Pedagogy For The 21st Century : A Culturally Inclusive Model, Stephanie Hassan Richardson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As cultural and racial demographics continue to diversify across college campuses, the First Year Composition (FYC) classroom becomes a site wherein faculty can engage in transformative pedagogical strategies to maximize ways in which students’ culturally diverse backgrounds can influence their rhetorical strategies in meaningful ways. However, a critical analysis of FYC and factors influencing its design and impact demonstrate that, to a large degree, faculty are not implementing pedagogical strategies that incorporate cultural rhetorics in strategic ways. This critical analysis sought to understand the significant factors hampering faculty desire and ability to deliver Culturally Inclusive Pedagogy (CIP), which is a …

Reexamining Por And Para In The Spanish Foreign Language Intermediate Classroom: A Usage-Based, Cognitive Linguistic Approach, Elizabeth M. Kissling, Andrea Tyler, Lisa Warren, Lauren Negrete
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
The present chapter represents the first stage in the larger investigation; it examines two aspects of applying a usage-based, CL approach to teaching por and para. First, we presented the multiple meanings of the two forms gradually, building learners’ knowledge in a series of scaffolded treatments, throughout the course of an entire semester rather than presenting them all in one concentrated lesson. Second, we presented the multiple meanings of por and para and structured their order of presentation according to a Cognitive Linguistic-inspired analysis, which emphasizes the systematic relationships among the multiple meanings. Such a systematic analysis is consistent …
Pronunciation Instruction Can Improve L2 Learners' Bottom-Up Processing For Listening, Elizabeth M. Kissling
Pronunciation Instruction Can Improve L2 Learners' Bottom-Up Processing For Listening, Elizabeth M. Kissling
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
Listening is widely regarded as an important skill that is difficult and necessary to teach in L2 classrooms. Listening requires both top-down and bottom-up processing, yet pedagogical techniques for the latter are often lacking. This study explores the efficacy of pronunciation instruction (PI) for improving learners’ bottom-up processing. The study recruited 116 relatively novice learners of Spanish as a foreign language and provided the experimental groups with brief lessons in PI emphasizing segmental or suprasegmental features followed by production-focused or perception-focused practice. Learners’ bottom-up processing skill was assessed with a sentence-level dictation task. Learners given PI on suprasegmental features followed …
