G89-935 Planning For Healthy Eating (Revised November 1994), Darlene Martin, Harriet Kohn, Charlotte Kern

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Dietary recommendations and tips for healthy eating are included to help reduce the risk of certain diseases.

What is healthy eating? It's eating the types and amounts of foods that promote the best possible health for you within the limits of your environmental and genetic makeup. Healthy eating can help you maintain a desirable weight. It helps reduce the risk of heart disease, some types of cancer, and obesity.

As we do more scientific studies on healthy eating, the recommendations may be refined. It pays to be alert to new, well-documented information about what constitutes healthy eating.

The National Research …

Limiting sodium intake to the lower part of the range (below) may help prevent high blood pressure in those prone to it

G89-950 Horse Insect Control Guide, John B. Campbell Jan 1989

G89-950 Horse Insect Control Guide, John B. Campbell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Insects that bother horses, and ways to treat them, are covered here.

People keep horses in Nebraska for a number of different reasons. Some are for 4-H projects and urban users (recreational), ranch and farm (work), breeding farms, and racing.

Some of the insect pests of horses are also pests of other livestock species. Other insects are specific to horses, but may be pests only on farm and ranch horses.

The best methods of pest control vary depending upon the type of horse production.

Full Fat Soybeans For Swine, Cooperative Extension Service Mar 1988

Full Fat Soybeans For Swine, Cooperative Extension Service

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Soybeans are an important protein source for the swine industry. However, the nutritional and economics values of soybeans as swine feed are dictated by the method used in processing the raw soybeans. Most soybeans produced in the U.S. undergo oil extraction and heat treatment to produce soybean oil and a byproduct soybean meal which is marketed as a protein supplement containing approximately 44 to 48% crude protein and 1.0% residual oil. Other raw soybean processing methods exist. However, nutrients in soybeans processed by different methods are not utilized with equal efficiency by all classes of swine. Raw soybeans contain antinutritional …

Serum D-Β-Hydroxybutyrate And Urea Nitrogen As Indicators Of Beef Cow Nutritional Status, P.A. Momont, R.J. Pruitt, R.H. Pritchard

South Dakota Beef Report, 1988

Mature Simmental x Angus crossbred cows were fed differing levels of nutrition before and after calving (mid-March to early May) to determine if blood serum levels of d-β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and urea nitrogen (SUN) could be used as indicators of nutritional status. Visual condition scores and condition score change were used as subjective appraisals of cow nutritional status. BHB levels prior to calving were elevated for cows close to calving and those carrying male fetuses. SUN levels prior to calving were higher for thin cows that were losing body condition. If on a low plane of nutrition after calving, BHB values …

Effects Of Body Condition On Reproductive Performance Of Range Beef Cows, R.J. Pruitt, P.A. Momont

South Dakota Beef Report, 1988

Mature Simnnental x Angus crossbred cows were fed differing Levels of nutrition from December to May in each of 3 years to create a wide range in cow body condition or fleshiness at the beginning of the calving season (beginning mid-March) and when turned to summer pasture (early May)1 month prior to the beginning of a 60-day breeding season ( early June). Cows that were fleshier in March, May or June cycled earlier and conceived earlier. Being thin in May or June had a more detrimental effect on pregnancy rate for cows that calved late in the calving season. A …

Nutrition Of The Performance Horse, Equine Section, Department Of Animal Sciences, University Of Kentucky Jan 1988

Nutrition Of The Performance Horse, Equine Section, Department Of Animal Sciences, University Of Kentucky

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

In today’s industry where seconds mean the difference between 1st and “also ran” at the track, our equine athletes must retain a competitive edge. Renewed interest in research about the performance horse’s nutrient needs has allowed horsemen to feed the athletic horse more scientifically than ever before to maintain that edge. Horses can be selected, bred, managed and fed as athletes. However, because knowing the horse’s individuality and nutrient needs is very important, the horseman’s skill in feeding the horse will never be totally replaced, no matter how precise the feeding recommendations.

G87-851 Improving Reproductive Performance And Productivity Of Beef Herds, Gene H. Deutscher Jan 1987

G87-851 Improving Reproductive Performance And Productivity Of Beef Herds, Gene H. Deutscher

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

NebGuide discusses management practices that can be used to improve reproduction and productivity of beef herds. The major objective of cow-calf producers should be to wean a calf from each cow every year. The average calf crop weaned in Nebraska is estimated at 80 calves weaned per 100 cows in breeding herds. A realistic goal is 90 to 95 calves weaned per 100 cows.

Effects Of Body Condition On Reproductive Performance Of Range Beef Cows, Patrick A. Momont

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A 3 yr. 22 factorial study was conducted with 133 mature Simmental X Angus cows calving for 81 d beginning in mid-March to determine minimum cow body condition required for adequate reproductive performance of range beef cows. Two levels of early (early December to mid-February) and late (from calving date to early May) winter nutrition were imposed. Nutritional treatments produced total winter (December-May) weight changes ranging from -188 to -5 kg and wide cow body condition differences at calving and breeding. The breeding season lasted 60-70 d beginning June 5 each yr. Visual condition scores (CS 1-9, l=thin), weight to …
