Usu Professor David Rosenberg Spearheads Asce Efforts To Encourage Research Reproducibility, Utah Water Research Laboratory
News
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recently announced a new program with the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management that will recognize and reward authors who make their research results more reproducible. As an associate editor at ASCE and Professor in civil and environmental engineering at USU and the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) at USU, Dr. David Rosenberg was instrumental in creating this new program. He has been studying the importance of reproducibility in research results and advocating for the concept for years.

Combining Bert With Contextual Linguistic Features For Identification Of Propaganda Spans In News Articles, Arjumand Younus, Muhammad Atif Qureshi
Conference papers
Recent endeavours at detection of propaganda in news articles treat this as a fine-grained problem of detecting it within fragments; and hence, transformer based embeddings perform decently in such detection. We build our propaganda detection framework on top of a transformer model simultaneously enriching it with contextual linguistic information of surrounding part-of-speech tags and LIWC categories the word itself belongs to. The evaluation outcomes being encouraging indicate a huge potential for this line of reasoning in natural language processing of news text.

Uwrl Welcomes Two New Faculty Members, Utah Water Research Laboratory
News
Last spring, the UWRL and USU’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering began seeking bright, creative, and interdisciplinary researchers “whose research will yield more holistic approaches to solving water problems in natural, built, and/or agricultural environments” to “lead and develop the next generation of resilient solutions to water problems in these linked environments.” And despite a worldwide pandemic, we were able to welcome two such individuals to the UWRL in time for fall semester!

Bootstrapping Web Archive Collections From Micro-Collections In Social Media, Alexander C. Nwala
Bootstrapping Web Archive Collections From Micro-Collections In Social Media, Alexander C. Nwala
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
In a Web plagued by disappearing resources, Web archive collections provide a valuable means of preserving Web resources important to the study of past events. These archived collections start with seed URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers) hand-selected by curators. Curators produce high quality seeds by removing non-relevant URIs and adding URIs from credible and authoritative sources, but this ability comes at a cost: it is time consuming to collect these seeds. The result of this is a shortage of curators, a lack of Web archive collections for various important news events, and a need for an automatic system for generating seeds. …
