News On The Internet, Robert Denicola Jan 2013

News On The Internet, Robert Denicola

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Newspapers are in trouble. Circulation and advertising are down as readers shift from print to online media. Although changing reader preferences and the loss of lucrative classified advertising to online sources are major worries, the news media seems preoccupied with news aggregators and bloggers who distribute news content on the internet without permission. Newspapers are not the only ones worried about the unauthorized distribution of "their" news on the internet. Financial services companies are unhappy about the distribution of their "hot" stock recommendations and other content providers seek to control online news ranging from movie schedules to business ratings. Traditional …

Una Herida Abierta A Content Analysis Of U.S. News Reports Covering Femicide In Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Eva Gray Jan 2013

Una Herida Abierta A Content Analysis Of U.S. News Reports Covering Femicide In Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Eva Gray

Theses & ETDs

Since 1993, hundreds of femicides (murders of women) have gone unsolved on the US-Mexico border. This thesis is concerned with how two US newspapers, the Houston Chronicle and the New York Times, cover these femicides in Juárez, Mexico. The research looks at three separate time periods: 1996-2000, 2001-2005, and 2006-2010 in order to ascertain changes in coverage through time; I coded 32 articles. I found lower coverage in the first time period; peaking around 2001, when there was increased attention by governments and NGOs condemning the murders. The Houston Chronicle provided more frequent coverage, though it tended to be brief. …

Feminist Approaches And The South African News Media, Denise Buiten Jan 2013

Feminist Approaches And The South African News Media, Denise Buiten

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Despite apparent feminist advancements within contemporary South Africa, gender transformation in the South African media industry has been both limited and irregular in terms of the ways in which newsroom cultures are being transformed, and the ways in which this impacts on the production of gendered media texts. Based on interviews with journalists and editors from three weekly South African newspapers, the Sunday Times, the Sunday Sun and the Mail & Guardian, this article explores the ways in which journalists articulate their understandings of gender and gender transformation within the media, and reflects on the ways in which these articulations …

Are Individuals Better Able To Acquire And Retain News Information That Is Consonant Or Dissonant With Their Ideological Beliefs?, James Lee Jenkins Jan 2013

Are Individuals Better Able To Acquire And Retain News Information That Is Consonant Or Dissonant With Their Ideological Beliefs?, James Lee Jenkins

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to find out whether people can better recall news information that is consonant or dissonant with their personal ideological beliefs. This study is a follow-on study to Joel Turner’s study (2007) that found that people’s perceived biases in the news are often triggered prior to the people reading the actual news information. The scope of this research was to determine the type of news information people are better able to recall. The two main research questions this study was attempting to find answers for were:

  • RQ1: Are conservatives better able to recall news information …

That's News To Me: An Exploratory Study Of The Uses And Gratifications Of Current Events On Social Media Of 18-24 Year-Olds, John Vincent Karlis Jan 2013

That's News To Me: An Exploratory Study Of The Uses And Gratifications Of Current Events On Social Media Of 18-24 Year-Olds, John Vincent Karlis

Theses and Dissertations

Social media is a dominant news source among the college-age demographic (18-24). Inherent in news consumption on social media is current events, that is, news that has individual relevance, societal relevance and is time constrained. This study adds to the existing body of uses and gratification literature. This one-shot exploratory study is the first of its kind, examining the "what" or different dimensions of news and the "why" or uses and gratifications that 18-24 year-olds use current events on social media. It also looked at the factors predicting recall of current events on social media.

Using a survey of 896 …

“I Took Up The Case Of The Stranger”: Arguments From Faith, History And Law, David H. Michels, David Blaikie Jan 2013

“I Took Up The Case Of The Stranger”: Arguments From Faith, History And Law, David H. Michels, David Blaikie

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

It may seem surprising that faith groups would offer sanctuary to refused refugees, or material support to undocumented migrants. These acts of resistance and compassion require normally law-abiding moral people to make a conscious choice to defy government and perhaps, if necessary, even break the law. The success of sanctuary movements (defined broadly here) relies on broad public support both to attract willing collaborators, and to forestall government intervention. Previous studies have examined the discourse around sanctuary practice, and the ensuing public debates. This chapter adds to this body of work by offering an empirical study of how individuals and …

Print To Pixel: How Can The Cultural Implications Of Mediated Images And Text Be Examined Using Creative Practice?, Patricia Adele Thomas

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Information in the twenty-first century is at our fingertips in an instant. Through the technology of the mobile phone, computer, and television, we are alerted to information of international, national, local, and personal significance. The aim of this research is to establish that creative practice can provide a cogent forum with which to interrogate the cultural implications of mediated images and text in the twenty first Century. This exegesis Print to pixel explores the interrelationship between the political and cultural values as identified in the various codes within western mainstream news media. The cultural implications of the shift from print …
