Perceptions Of Clickbait: A Q-Methodology Approach, Yimin Chen, Victoria L. Rubin Jan 2017

Perceptions Of Clickbait: A Q-Methodology Approach, Yimin Chen, Victoria L. Rubin

FIMS Presentations

Clickbait is “content whose main purpose is to attract attention and encourage visitors to click on a link to a particular web page” (“clickbait,” n.d.). The term is also generally used to refer specifically to the attention-grabbing headlines. Critics of clickbait argue that clickbait is shallow, misleading, and ubiquitous – “a new word that has become synonymous with online journalism” (Frampton, 2015). It is the subject of a small, but growing number of studies in disciplines ranging from linguistics, communications, and information sciences. Palau-Sampio (2016) analyzed linguistic strategies associated with tabloid journalism in the Spanish digital newspaper Elpais.com, concluding that …

Exploring Perspectives Of Students Studying Communication Toward Media Access And Use: A Q Methodological Study, Angel Riggs, Diane Montgomery, Cindy Blackwell

Faculty Publications

This study sought to help communication educators better understand young news consumers who have grown up among a plethora of media options. To better reach and educate today’s up-and-coming media professionals, those in the industry need a better understanding of modern media students’ perspectives of news. This study used Q methodology and relies on Stephenson’s Play and Dutta-Bergman’s Media Complementarity theories. Students on a large, comprehensive university campus pursuing undergraduate studies via a communications-related major were asked to complete a Q sort and demographic instrument. Thirty-four participants resulted in 33 usable sorts. The following labels were applied to the three …

What We Know: Planning, Implementing, And Assessing A Media Literacy Themed Summer Camp, Philina Richardson, Nancy Garmer, Erin Mahaney, Lisa Petrillo, Rebecca Weber

Evans Library Publications

Information and media literacy are essential for today’s children and teens as they navigate an increasingly saturated information environment. Educators at all levels must seek to communicate and teach the skills that students need to evaluate, understand, and use information in engaging and innovative ways. This paper highlights such an effort by librarians and staff at Florida Institute of Technology in the planning and implementation of a camp called “What We Know: Understanding Media and Its Influence.” The camp was administered by five library staff and attended by ten teens between the ages of 12 and 16. Throughout the camp, …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Media Reporting Of Police Involved Shootings In Florida, John L. Brown Nov 2016

An Exploratory Analysis Of Media Reporting Of Police Involved Shootings In Florida, John L. Brown

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this study is on media reporting of police involved shootings in Florida. Given that knowledge of killings committed by law enforcement are frequently restricted to what people get from news sources, it is important to investigate the way these messages are being communicated. An exploratory analysis of 199 articles and transcripts covering 86 cases relevant to deadly use of force by police officers as reported from 2013 to 2015 provided the primary data source. The analysis engaged a critical examination of media content and goodness of fit models to identify commonalities used by the media when reporting …

The Autonomy Of News Journalists Of Kosovo’S Public Service Broadcaster Between Political Instrumentalization And Social Responsibility, Givlie Rexha Oct 2016

The Autonomy Of News Journalists Of Kosovo’S Public Service Broadcaster Between Political Instrumentalization And Social Responsibility, Givlie Rexha

UBT International Conference

The news journalists of Kosovo’s Radio Television are a category of employees who find themselves between the influence of political factors, and the social responsibility assigned to them by the functions of the public broadcaster. Although their professional autonomy is guaranteed by the status of the public broadcaster, its actualization depends on the media hierarchy, which in itself is a product of political decision making. Politics exerts its influence on the public media of Kosovo through the right of decision making on strategic issues pertaining to its development, and through the election of the managing bodies. The effects of political …

Graduate Research

This case study provides a real-life account of an ethical dilemma in journalism faced by a young reporter in the TV news industry. It explores the points of view of both the journalist and that journalist’s supervisor. It aims to spur critical thinking on the part of the reader, and to show that not all decisions can be grouped into ‘right and wrong.’
