Changes In Conflict Framing In The News Coverage Of An Environmental Conflict, Linda L. Putnam, Martha Shoemaker
Changes In Conflict Framing In The News Coverage Of An Environmental Conflict, Linda L. Putnam, Martha Shoemaker
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This article examines the role of media and conflict framing in four major turning points of an environmental controversy. In particular, it focuses on the media's role in defining the dispute and altering the naming and blaming among constituents during these turning points. It also examines how these changes relate to escalation and de-escalation of the conflict.

Crime And Race Representation: A Content Analysis Of Las Vegas Local Television News, Julie Arradaza Chapman
Crime And Race Representation: A Content Analysis Of Las Vegas Local Television News, Julie Arradaza Chapman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Media studies have found Blacks more often linked with media reports of violent crime in their local communities compared to other races. The aim of this paper is to reveal if current trends in the Las Vegas media market overrepresent African Americans as the most active perpetrators of crime by examining crime statistics, race demographics, and television representations of crime and race in the local news. This study is a content analysis of the five major television network affiliates: KVBC, KVVU, KLAS, KTNV, and KINC. Seven hypotheses are tested. Results indicate that local television viewers in Las Vegas receive inaccurate …

Press Coverage Of Interethnic Conflict: Examples From The Los Angeles Riots Of 1992, Shah Shah
Journal of Dispute Resolution
News media are an important source of cultural production and information. Their representation of the social world provides explanations, descriptions, and frames for understanding how and why the world works as it does. In media studies, "frames" refer to the perspectives on, or interpretation of, current events provided by news coverage. Frames are complex and overlapping, existing in a single news article or within an entire body of news coverage. Multiple and opposing frames may exist simultaneously. Frames are built up from the choices reporters make in terms of language use, source selection, and story organization. In their coverage of …
News Coverage And Social Protest: How The Media's Protect Paradigm Exacerbates Social Conflict, Douglas M. Mcleod
News Coverage And Social Protest: How The Media's Protect Paradigm Exacerbates Social Conflict, Douglas M. Mcleod
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Past research on media coverage of social protests has yielded evidence of a protest paradigm: a set of news coverage patterns that typifies mainstream media coverage. This coverage generally disparages protesters and hinders their role as vital actors on the political stage. The lack of respect for the value of social protest inherent in such coverage has created frustration among the protesters, which has in turn contributed to dysfunctional confrontations. However, under certain conditions, journalists will deviate from the protest paradigm. Such aberrations were found in the Los Angeles Times' coverage of the May 1, 2006, "Day without Immigrants" demonstrations. …
News Coverage, The Expansion Of Discourse, And Conflict, Philip Seib
News Coverage, The Expansion Of Discourse, And Conflict, Philip Seib
Journal of Dispute Resolution
The universe of news cultures--comprising providers and consumers-has never been static. It perpetually evolves, sometimes in small increments, sometimes with dazzling leaps. We are now in one of the latter phases, with new technologies driving change at high speed. This alteration of the news universe is a mix of reshaping and expansion, and it has a profound effect on social and political life throughout much of the world. It has particular impact on how policy makers and the public evaluate and respond to conflict.
Korean Hurricane Media Discourse Analysis, Youngae Lee
Korean Hurricane Media Discourse Analysis, Youngae Lee
LSU Master's Theses
Presented within this thesis, I have analyzed a particular TV broadcast news discourse called Korean Hurricane Media Discourse (KHMD), which was presented online from YTN, a Korean cable TV news station. The data presents the topic of the Korean refugees who were forced to evacuate to Baton Rouge from New Orleans, after facing the destructions of Hurricane Katrina on August 2005. The methods are Ron Scollon’s TV news frames (1998), van Dijk’s superstructure (1988a and 1988b) and macrostructure (1980), Allan Bell’s news structure (1991), Dell Hymes’s SPEAKING model (1974), and Erving Goffman’s frameworks (1986). Since KHMD is a spoken, plannable …

Lets Make It Outback Tonight, Michael Douglas Erickson
Lets Make It Outback Tonight, Michael Douglas Erickson
Theses and Dissertations
When I was younger, shortly after my father died, my mother bought me a t-shirt that I loved and wore till it was worn out. On the shirt there was an image of a man, strapped into an electric chair, holding pieces of bread in each hand. A sign above him read, "Making the best of a bad situation." That statement became a mantra I held onto in the early years after my father's death. It still guides my personal philosophy---humor is key to survival. Particularly a type of humor that celebrates the fact that "shit happens", while highlighting and …
