The Journalism Ratings Board: An Incentive-Based Approach To Cable News Accountability, Andrew Selbst
The Journalism Ratings Board: An Incentive-Based Approach To Cable News Accountability, Andrew Selbst
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The American establishment media is in crisis. With newsmakers primarily driven by profit, sensationalism and partisanship shape news coverage at the expense of information necessary for effective self-government. Focused on cable news in particular this Note proposes a Journalism Ratings Board to periodically rate news programs based on principles of good journalism. The Board will publish periodic reports and display the news programs' ratings during the programs themselves, similar to parental guidelines for entertainment programs. In a political and legal climate hostile to command-and-control regulation, such an incentive-based approach will help cable news fulfill the democratic function of the press.

Reading On The Internet: The Presentation Of Online News Articles And Its Relationship To Reader’S Recall And Comprehension, Kristen Curtze
Reading On The Internet: The Presentation Of Online News Articles And Its Relationship To Reader’S Recall And Comprehension, Kristen Curtze
Theses
Since 1995, the number of Internet users has increased by 1.88 billion people. As the population increased, so did the number of websites, news portals, and the amount of information presented on the Internet. Information once commonly read in a newspaper can now be found online with videos, interactive features, and other forms of multimedia. Yet, is reading a story in static, plain text different from reading a story with videos and interactivity? This study asks whether or not a relationship exists between Internet news article presentations and a reader's recall and comprehension. Forty-two participants read online news articles presented …

Litigation, Legislation, And Democracy In A Post- Newspaper America, Ronnell Anderson Jones
Litigation, Legislation, And Democracy In A Post- Newspaper America, Ronnell Anderson Jones
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
This Article is the first to address a looming constitutional crisis that can be expected to accompany the death of the American newspaper. Although the literature on newspapers’ pending demise is voluminous, it has failed to appreciate a critically important legal dynamic. Scholars and commentators have often assumed that the primary or exclusive harm resulting from the death of newspapers is the expected decline of public-affairs reporting. The assumption is that if other new-media entities can emerge to fully assume this role, the threatened harms to democracy will not occur. This Article demonstrates the falsity of that assumption, offering a …

All The News That's Fit To Print? A Comparison Of News Narratives Of The 2009 Horduran Coup, Sarah P. Iacobucci
Theses & ETDs
This thesis seeks to analyze the differences in the narratives about the coup d'etat of President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras in 2009 from three news sources: Mexico's La Jornada, TeleSUR, a transnational Latin American news network, and The New York Times. La Jornada and TeleSUR both represent outlets with left-leaning, counter-hegemonic tendencies, but whereas TeleSUR represents the vision of ALBA, an organization of countries seeking alternate paths of development for the region, La Jornada is a wholly independent news source. By comparing these two sources with The New York Times, an emblem of mainstream Western news, this thesis seeks to …

Accounting For The Troubled Starlet: Medicalization And Femininity In The Age Of News Punditry, Mallary B. Allen
Research Papers
This article examines contributions of television news media to the dominant cultural dialogue regarding young women’s deviance as demonstrated by pundit commentary concerning the criminal behavior of young female celebrities. Using a case study of actress Lindsay Lohan, I examine the accounts that pundits offer for the deviance of these young women and whether medical and psychological explanations enter discourse in a significant way. Additionally, I examine the extent to which feminine mental health issues contribute to the creation of a cultural stock character evocative of tragic, female literary archetypes. I find that mental and psychological health dialogue is pervasive …
