Analysis Of Coal Combustion By-Products Disposal Practices At The San Juan Mine: Hydrologic And Water Quality Issues, Bruce Thomson
Analysis Of Coal Combustion By-Products Disposal Practices At The San Juan Mine: Hydrologic And Water Quality Issues, Bruce Thomson
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Coal Combustion By-Products (CCBs) are generated by the burning of coal for electric power generation and as waste streams from emissions control systems. They consist of bottom ash from the furnaces, fly ash from electrostatic precipitators, and flue gas desulfurization sludge from air pollution scrubbers. Depending on the characteristics of the coal, CCBs may contain high concentrations of metals or other constituents that present a threat to ground or surface water resources if not properly managed. This report describes results of an investigation of CCBs generated by a power plant in northwestern New Mexico. Coal Combustion By-Products from this plant …
Leaving The Homeland On La Jornada Del Muerto The Archaeology Of Tiffany Pueblo, Evan Giomi
Leaving The Homeland On La Jornada Del Muerto The Archaeology Of Tiffany Pueblo, Evan Giomi
Theses & ETDs
The history of the late pre-contact and early Colonial periods along the lower Rio Grande in New Mexico has been poorly studied archaeologically. Without an indigenous occupation after the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, the region has had little academic attention comparative to the histories of the Pueblos along the middle and northern Rio Grande, many of which maintain an indigenous population into the present. Yet, a descendent population of the Piro people who lived in the lower Rio Grande does exists in the present day, centered mainly in El Paso and Ciudad de Juarez. Following developments in indigenous archaeology in the …

Impacts Of Potential Development On Groundwater Resources In The Community Of Cutter, New Mexico., Chance Coats
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Commercial space flight from New Mexico is soon to become a reality. With Spaceport America soon to be in full operation, economic growth is expected to increase in the Jornada del Muerto Basin. A potential site for future development is located five miles north of the Spaceport, in the community of Cutter, New Mexico. This project discusses the groundwater resources available beneath the community of Cutter. Data from a pumping test performed on well LRG-10140 along with groundwater level measurements from the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer (NMOSE) and water level data provided by John Shomaker and Associates, …
Variations In The Stable Isotope Compositions Of Water Vapor And Precipitation In New Mexico : Links To Synoptic-Scale Weather, Mel Strong
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The D content of atmospheric water vapor over Albuquerque, New Mexico was measured for 30 months with air samples captured one to three times daily on the roof of a three story building. In addition, the D and O isotopes for 106 samples of surface water vapor and 40 samples of precipitation from the southwestern US were also measured. The relationship between the isotopic ratios of water vapor (δDv) and humidity, in the form of vertically integrated precipitable water (PW), is explored. Midlatitude waves are responsible for a great deal of δDv variation throughout the fall, winter, and spring. As …

Impact Of Los Alamos National Laboratory On The Economies Of Northern New Mexico And The State As A Whole, Doleswar Bhandari
BBER Publications
The UNM Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) was commissioned by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to estimate its economic impacts on northern New Mexico — Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Taos, San Miguel, and Mora counties — and for the state, for fiscal year 2009. The study concludes that LANL injected more than $1.4 billion directly into the northern New Mexico economy during FY 2009. These injections provided more than 11,200 direct jobs, nearly $1.1 billion labor income, and $1.4 billion economic output to the region. LANLs expenditures also indirectly supported approximately 9,300 jobs, more than …

The Impacts Of Federal Stimulus Funding Under The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act (Arra) On The Economy Of New Mexico, Lee A. Reynis, Doleswar Bhandari
BBER Publications
A study commissioned by the NM Office of Recovery and Reinvestment to assess the impacts of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) on New Mexico's economy. The ARRA provided resources to state and local economies through four primary methods: tax relief provided to individuals and businesses, aid to directly impacted individuals and families, fiscal stabilization to help maintain levels of government spending for key services, and stimulus projects. This report presents the economic impacts of ARRA supported expenditures from the enactment of the law on 19 February 2009 through the final end date for ARRA projects on 30 September …

Economic Impacts Of The Anticipated Non-Accreditation Of Bernalillo County Levees, Daren Ruiz, Lee A. Reynis, Molly J. Bleecker
Economic Impacts Of The Anticipated Non-Accreditation Of Bernalillo County Levees, Daren Ruiz, Lee A. Reynis, Molly J. Bleecker
BBER Publications
The Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority (AMAFCA) contracted the UNM Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) to estimate the economic impact resulting from levees in Bernalillo County losing FEMA accreditation. The levees are not expected to meet FEMAs post Hurricane Katrina standards. BBER estimates the increased cost of flood insurance for parcels located in the floodplain will likely average about $5.5 million in the first year and $6.2 million a year thereafter. Part 1 of the study describes the current floodplain in Bernalillo County, calculates the net new floodplain, and estimates the increase in flood insurance costs in …
Weapons Labs And City Growth: Livermore And Albuquerque, 1945-1975, Layne Rochelle Karafantis
Weapons Labs And City Growth: Livermore And Albuquerque, 1945-1975, Layne Rochelle Karafantis
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis traces the transformation of two cities in the American West: Albuquerque, a medium-sized metropolitan area in the generally low-population state of New Mexico, and Livermore, California, a relatively small town on the fringe of the massive San Francisco Bay Area metropolis. The federal government built nuclear weapons labs in both places after World War II, and as a result, they encountered phenomenal growth. This is not surprising, as authors such as Peter Hall and Ann Markusen have argued that federal installations in the postwar years affected the economies of many western cities. However, this thesis asserts that rural …

Unm West Campus In The New Rio Rancho City Center: A Report For The University Of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, Lee A. Reynis, Andrew Webb, Molly J. Bleecker
BBER Publications
Undertaken at the request of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, BBER compiled data to quantify the demand for programs at the new UNM West campus in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The report includes an estimate of the campus's catchment area based upon drive-time analyses; demographic information on the population within the catchment area; an inventory and map of existing businesses that could serve the campus students and staff; and summaries of interviews conducted by BBER with business and community leaders on their "hopes and visions" for the UNM West campus. Illustrated with maps and tables.

An Inventory And Assessment Of Los Alamos Arts And Cultural Assets, Jeffrey Mitchell, Molly J. Bleecker, Scott Maddux, Adam Barber
BBER Publications
This report presents the findings of an investigation into the arts and cultural industries of Los Alamos, New Mexico. The study was done in three parts: an inventory of the "creative" economy of the Los Alamos area; a community-based survey of artists, historians, retailers, and others engaged in the area's creative industries; an analysis of the impact of and trends in the creative economy of the Los Alamos area. Results indicate that the structure of the creative economic sectors in Los Alamos is atypical compared to that of Santa Fe and other New Mexico communities. Includes tables, charts, references, and …
