Documenting Dylan: How The Documentary Film Functions For Bob Dylan Fans, Theodore G. Petersen

The purpose of this study is to explore the role of the documentary film in the relationship between the artist and the fan; specifically how Bob Dylan fans use the documentary films Dont Look Back, directed by D.A. Pennebaker, and No Direction Home, directed by Martin Scorsese. Dylan, Pennebaker, and Scorsese are three important figures in American popular culture, and these are the two most prominent films about Dylan. These films discuss relatively the same time period, yet delineate two different versions of Dylan's identity. Dont Look Back, released in 1967, documents Dylan's 1965 tour of England. Adorno & Horkheimer (1998) argue that the Culture Industry generates cultural artefacts that fail to develop human consciousness and hence support the domination of the capitalist system. Steinert (2003) states that the pressures facing musicians to negotiate between the demands of the culture industry and the traditional role of the artist generates a fundamental contradiction within art which is symbolically enacted through artistic production. This study, which draws on on-going postgraduate research aims to develop a research framework that investigates how musicians negotiate this contradiction. Despite all the critical attention jazz has received in recent years from scholars in other fields---literature, history, political science, cultural studies---very little headway has been made in understanding what jazz aesthetics are and how they might inform other forms of cultural and artistic expression. Part of the difficulty lies in the time-bound, performative nature of the artform and the fact that it is primarily a non-discursive means of expression; that is to say, jazz does not translate well.

The purpose of this project is t study the status of dancing and drumming education in an Anlo-Ewe rural community. The research conducted includes both traditional and formal methods of educatin in these areas. There is a wealth of dancing and drumming in a Ghanaian community and this project attempts to uncover how that resource is cultivated. As a supplement to this study, I learned drums rythms and dances of this area. This study is not meant to judge the quality of education, but rather to learn more about the Ghanaian people and society through drumming and dancing.

As an area of geographical inquiry, popular music has not been explored to any large extent. Where writings exist, they have been somewhat divorced from recent theoretical and methodological questions that have rejuvenated social and cultural geography. In this paper, I focus on one arena which geographers can develop in their analysis of popular music, namely, the exploration of local influences and global forces in the production of music. Scarcely anywhere else in the repertory of lyric poetry is the identity of the poet and the composer quite as apparent as in the works of Guillaume de Machaut, the foremost French poet and musician of the fourteenth century (d1377). His works with music should be approached confidently as integral lyrics, as composite works of poetry and music, because he wrote about the process of providing music for poetry and writing texts to be set to music. Furthermore, he specified the sequence of his own compositions- narrative and lyrical, poetical and musical - all in a single book.

This paper illustrates how popular music written, produced, and performed by Singaporeans provides a means through which the culture and society of Singapore may be understood. Music with English language text conveys a sense of place and reflects a distinctively Singaporean spirit and identity. The paper examines four themes: the portrayal of Singapore's multiracial population which reflects a unique cultural synthesis; the Singaporeans' concept of urbanity, manifested as the simultaneous attraction and repulsion towards the city and the desire for nature and the rustic; the distinctive social engineering in Singapore; and the way in which global issues are imported into …
