Measuring The Perceived Effectiveness Of Five Selected Professional Courses Taken By Alumni Theology Majors And How They Are Related To Selective Demographics: A Mixed Methods Study, Barry J. Tryon
Dissertations
Problem
The study was prompted by the need for the evaluation of current theological educational programs for preparing students to meet the many challenges of pastoral ministry in a rapidly changing world. However, to date there has been little published research addressing the effectiveness of undergraduate theological education. Furthermore, changes implemented in the theological education program at Southern Adventist University (Southern) have not been evaluated for their effectiveness for ministerial job preparedness.
Method
This descriptive study measured the perceived effectiveness of five professional courses taught in the undergraduate theological educational program at Southern for ministerial job preparedness. A parallel mixed …
Involving Youth In Ministries Of Service, Maryrae Romatowski Stein
Involving Youth In Ministries Of Service, Maryrae Romatowski Stein
Pastoral Institute
I am currently serving the parish of St. Anthony Marie de Claret as the Director of Religious Education. Prior to outlining this proposal, I assessed the strengths and weaknesses within our catechetical programs, looked at the dynamics of the St. Anthony community, and discussed the project with our pastor to obtain his preferences. The common thread of concern was the lack of involvement and presence of the youth in the life of the parish. I decided to design and implement a pastoral project, using my ninth grade class as the pilot group, which would allow students to serve alongside adult …

Grief In Community: The Establishment Of Bereavement Ministry Teams From The Congregation At Sandy Run Baptist Church In Mooresboro, North Carolina, Andrew S. Rawls
Doctor of Ministry Projects
The Church is to be the expression of hope through the various contours of the human story. Too often congregations have difficulty expressing this hope during the time of death and extending that hope to ministry with the bereaved. In this project I studied the increase in self-efficacy in bereavement ministry with the congregation of Sandy Run Baptist Church in Mooresboro, North Carolina. The research focuses on the teaching of a curriculum that explores the biblical, theological, and clinical aspects of grief. The results of my research show this was an effective means of increasing self-efficacy.
Best Practices For Retaining Youth Group Students In The Local Church Post-High School, Christopher Dortch
Best Practices For Retaining Youth Group Students In The Local Church Post-High School, Christopher Dortch
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Research has indicated that students who were once active in a local church are leaving the church and possibly leaving the faith after they graduate high school. The purpose of this project is to present best practices for youth pastors in retaining students' involvement in a local church post-high school. The project will consist of surveying fifty student pastors and will examine the impact of the student pastor's tenure, student ministry philosophy and structure, curriculum plans, and the role of the student pastor in assisting students through this transition. Through a review and examination of these elements, the project will …
Honest To God: Confessions Of A Pastor's Wife, Deana Carol Nall
Honest To God: Confessions Of A Pastor's Wife, Deana Carol Nall
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an honest reflection on my experience as a minister's wife and how I have handled this role differently than my mother and grandmother, who were also married to ministers. It documents the events that have shaped my views of God, church, and politics, and how my evolving views have affected my faith. Included are observations on traditional expectations of clergy wives and the ways I and others in this role have broken with stereotypical ideas to embrace our individuality.

The Postmodern Church, Timothy C. Lawless
The Postmodern Church, Timothy C. Lawless
Senior Honors Theses
Within the past twenty years, the Church (especially in America) has experienced dwindling membership and attendance, along with a host of other problems. Many of these problems are symptomatic of a massive cultural shift toward postmodernism, leading to discontentment with the Church. In attempting to respond to these challenges, the emergent Church has arisen as a major element of American religious culture. Their methodology and doctrine is heavily influenced by postmodernism, which presents a further challenge for Christian leaders and ministers. This paper will survey the challenges facing the Church, will describe the emergent Church’s origin and response to these …

Toward An Integrated Youth Ministry: A Case Study Of The Application Of Principles From Ephesians Among Teens And Their Families Of The Collegedale Church Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Timothy Allen Cross
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
According to recent research on young adults in the Collegedale Church of Seventh-day Adventists, there has been an approximate 68% attrition rate (Rainer, 2009, pp. 5-6). This research revealed that 84% of the young people growing up in the Collegedale Church drop out and only 38% of those who drop out engage in another church. Consequently, of the young people who grow up in the Collegedale Church, this leaves a net result of 68% who drop out from church entirely. DeVries’ seminal work (2004), combined with Rainer and Rainer’s research (2008), demonstrate the potential of a significant increase in …

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course explores the dynamics of living in a postmodern culture and its attendant impact on the church and its ministry to adolescents. The focus is on developing a theology of youth ministry which takes seriously the unique needs of postmodern students, and then look at how that theology should culminate in specific practices of ministry to youth. Special attention is given to the fact that we are living “between worlds” and how our ministries need to become bi-lingual, speaking both the language of faith and the language of culture. Developing A Lay Ministry Team Led Student Ministry, Stuart W. Cox
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the process of how one church developed a lay ministry team in both principle and practice which now provides effective leadership for its student ministry. The church is Nall Memorial Baptist Church of Graham, North Carolina. The author of this project serves as the church’s senior pastor. You answered God’s call and came to seminary to prepare for ministry. How will that happen? Before you graduate you will read scores of books, sit through hundreds of hours of classes, write papers and pass exams. But that will not guarantee preparation for ministry. Your spiritual and vocational formation is the heart of preparation for ministry. A servant of God is formed through the integration of Being, Knowing, and Doing. It takes place in community, as God graciously works in and through each person. Formation calls for biblical/theological and theoretical foundations, the developing of ministry skills, the doing of …
