Who’S In Control? Perceived Stress And Emotional Regulation Partially Mediate The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) On Mental Health And Life Satisfaction., Mary A. Burdan
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur during the first 18 years of life and have a strong potential to negatively impact health and well-being in adulthood. The exploration of this connection is important because health and lifestyle behaviors have been linked to the leading causes of death in the United States. ACEs have been found to alter brain development and have been associated with mental health issues and lower life satisfaction, but information about the pathway between these connections is scarce. The present study aimed to investigate if inadequate emotional regulation and higher levels of perceived …
Mental Health Crisis Of Medical Staffs During The Pandemic – How Has The Covid-19 Impacted Health Care Workers’ Mental Status, Yue Chen
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The COVID-19 pandemic has waged a relentless battle against humanity, but amidst the physical toll lies a hidden front: the war on the mental health of our healthcare workers (HCWs).
Previous reviews have demonstrated a potential prevalence of mental health problems among HCWs, but these reviews necessitate updating and inclusion of more studies, along with a comparative analysis of pre- and post-pandemic backgrounds. Therefore, the aim of my study is to deliver updated prevalence estimates for mental health concerns among HCWs in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The results show not only a drastic increase in the percentage of …

The Physical And Mental Health Implications On Patients Of Childbearing Age Following The Dobbs Deicison, Jaclyn M. Schultz, Mariana A. Sales, Amy C. Nguyen, Chloe M. Triolo, Melissa K. Crisci
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background: In June 2022, the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs v. Jackson case which allowed for individual states to determine the legality of abortion. Thirteen states had “trigger” laws in place that immediately restricted abortion access. Since then, many states have enacted laws restricting access to abortion, increasing the total number of states where abortion is outlawed or heavily restricted.
Hypothesis: The goal of this review was to examine the potential implications of restricted access to abortion care on the physical and mental health of patients of childbearing age, which was hypothesized to be …

A Qualitative Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Individuals Whose Parents Or Grandparents Had/Have Substance Abuse Issues In The Midwest, Brandie Lee Gaudet
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study focused on the lived experiences of individuals being raised by individuals who had/have substance abuse issues in the Midwest region of the United States of America. A closer look at this topic offered new insight into treatment and resources for adult children raised by parents/grandparents (collectively “parents”) with substance abuse issues (“SAI”) and how the parents’ substance abuse issues compromised the behavioral health outcomes of the adult children and affected the parents’ parenting outcomes. Understanding the role of family systems theory in adaptive and maladaptive behaviors is essential when formulating a plan to help individuals’ negatively impacted by …
Art Of Returning: Supporting Students After Psychiatric Hospitalization, Kaly Mariano
Art Of Returning: Supporting Students After Psychiatric Hospitalization, Kaly Mariano
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Reintegrating into campus life after a psychiatric hospitalization can be deeply challenging for college students. Research shows that in the two weeks following discharge from inpatient care, individuals are 200 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population—making this a critical period of vulnerability (Chung et al., 2017). Suicide remains the second leading cause of death among college-aged adults (Centers for Disease Control, 2023). In response to these risks, this capstone project utilized a mixed-methods approach, through community-based participatory research to explore how CSUMB’s CARE Team and Dean of Students’ Office can best support students before, during, …

Self-Compassion Mediates The Relationship Between Childhood Adversity In The Prediction Of Later Health Outcomes Among U.S. Adults, Emily Bunch
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events, such as abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, that occur before 18 years old. ACEs are strong predictors of negative health outcomes, such as poor physical health and risky health behaviors (Felitti et al., 1998; Merrick et al., 2017; Hughes et al., 2017). Previous research has proposed self- compassion may serve as a robust protective factor against childhood adversity (Hazzard et al., 2021) and may help explain the negative consequences of ACEs. The present study investigated the relationship between retrospectively reported ACEs and health outcomes in the context of self-compassion. 458 U.S. adults …

Household Wealth And Mental Health In Older Adults Across Racial Groups: Moderating Role Of Social Support, Sunkanmi Folorunsho
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis examines the relationship between household wealth and mental health outcomes among older adults, with particular attention to racial and ethnic differences and the potential moderating role of social support. Although financial resources are widely recognized as important determinants of psychological well-being, less is known about how social support interacts with economic conditions to shape mental health in later life. The study also addresses how these patterns may vary among different racial and ethnic groups, given persistent inequalities in wealth and disparities in access to social resources.

The philosophical assumption of this study is ontology which assisted in reporting the different realities of its participants. Schlossberg’s transition theory guided this study for understanding teacher transitions and changes, and the social constructivism worldview captured various mental …

Mental Illness Among The Homeless Communities, Tania Wilcox
Mental Illness Among The Homeless Communities, Tania Wilcox
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The goal of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the perspectives of individuals with substance use and mental illness on their co-occurring conditions. Mental illness and substance use disorder are commonly known in homeless communities, especially those experiencing chronic homelessness. Other social factors like gentrification, displacement, systemic racism, and insufficient affordable housing also contribute to the problem by restricting the availability of shelter for vulnerable groups. Furthermore, the lack of stable, affordable housing in California is a significant problem, and having access to comprehensive healthcare services exacerbates these problems.
