Coping With Stress Following A Natural Disaster: The Volcanic Eruption Of Mt. St. Helens, Shirley Ann Murphy
Dissertations and Theses
This study focuses on the coping responses of the bereaved immediate family and close friends of persons who died as a result of the volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens in southwestern Washington on May 18, 1980. Three major research questions were addressed: Is there a relationship between illness and three life events: presumed death of a close relative or friend, confirmed death of a close relative or friend, and loss of one's permanent of recreational residence? Do self-efficacy and social supports act as intervening variables to buffer the negative effects of stress on one's health when coping with loss? …

Mental Health Status Of Vietnamese Refugees In Utah County, Utah, David A. Acree
Mental Health Status Of Vietnamese Refugees In Utah County, Utah, David A. Acree
Theses and Dissertations
This study attempted to measure mental health status of Vietnamese refugees in Utah County, Utah. The test instrument used was the Cornell Medical Index (CMI). Two subproblems were considered: First, to see if refugee complaints on the CMI were predominantly physiological or psychological. Second, to see if there was a relationship between CMI scores and a related list of demographic variables.
Results showed the mean CMI score for the sample under study was well above the suggested score indicative of possible psychological dysfunction. For 80% of participants, psychological complaints were predominant over physical complaints. The only variables showing a relationship …
Criminally Committed Mental Patient Services: A Task Force Report, Roger V. Endell, John E. Havelock
Criminally Committed Mental Patient Services: A Task Force Report, Roger V. Endell, John E. Havelock
Reports
Until 1980, criminal defendants found incompetent to stand trial or not guilty by reason of insanity were committed under contract, at the discretion of the Alaska Division of Mental Health, to Atascadero State Hospital in California, a facility suitable to longer-term care of persons needing a secure setting. Changes in California state policy foreclosed this option. The most likely facility in Alaska that could accommodate this class of patients was Alaska Psychiatric Institute (API) in Anchorage; however, introduction of a few new patients with special security needs would have impacts on existing programs of the Institute. This report presents recommendations …

The Role Of Mental Health Professionals In The Criminal Process: The Case For Informed Speculation, Christopher Slobogin, Richard J. Bonnie
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
In this article we have attempted to make the case for continued participation by appropriately qualified mental health professionals in the adjudication of reconstructive subjective issues of the criminal law. In Part I, we outlined the reasons why imprecision and speculation is and must be tolerated in doctrines of exculpation and mitigation. In Part II, we developed the case for evidentiary rules which permit "informed speculation" by qualified clinical experts so as to enable defendants to explore and present subjective defenses and assist triers of fact to assess the plausibility and significance of such claims. We recognize that many mental …

We present in this issue of The Cairo Papers a broad spectrum of articles dealing with the children of Egypt and their families; each article has a research base in the real world of childhood and each in its own way suggests trends for further work in both research and applied areas in child development. Ciaccio's paper consists of an integrated set of recommendations based on action-oriented research sponsored by UNICEF- it is clear from a reading of his paper that the International Year of The Child is not simply another 'UN year' but rather a point of departure from …

The Constitutionality Of Michigan's Guilty But Mentally Ill Verdict, John M. Grostic
The Constitutionality Of Michigan's Guilty But Mentally Ill Verdict, John M. Grostic
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This article will assess the constitutionality of the statute providing for a GBMI verdict by examining the likely, impact of this statute on the constitutional rights of legally insane defendants. Part I will briefly outline the relevant provisions of the GBMI statute. Part II will consider whether legally insane defendants have a constitutional right to an insanity defense. Part III will then argue that some defendants, though legally insane at the time they committed allegedly criminal acts, will nevertheless be found GBMI rather than NGRI.

Parent Education: Its Impact On Parental Well-Being, Jean M. Anderson
Parent Education: Its Impact On Parental Well-Being, Jean M. Anderson
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The study understood to determine the effect parent training program have on parental mental well-being and whether the reason parents enter training affects their initial level of mental well-being or the outcome of the training. A review of the research literature reveals that parents are the appropriate subjects to train to change children's behavior and personalities. The literature does not support the theory that parents cause children's behavior and personalities, but we can conclude that parents are a definite, important influence in these areas. In the process of learning to impact their children, the parents participating in parent education programs …

The Mental Health Needs Of The Moderately Mentally Retarded Individual And The Family, Carol Ann Baglin
Theses
The general setting for this study was a typical special education site serving the severely handicapped in Los Angeles County, between the ages of three to twenty-one. The discussions refer to those individuals whose psychological evaluations , using the Stanford- Binet Intelligence Scale , the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Revised, or the Leiter International Intelligence Scale, place them within the range of the moderately retarded and cause them to warrant an educational setting that serves such individuals. The families reside in Los Angeles County and generally fall within the lower to middle economic strata , with approximately 55% qualifying …

Referrals To Mental Health Treatment Facilities, Laura A. Dummit
Honors Papers
This paper is organized into three main sections. The first is a review of the literature which serves as a theoretical background for this research. Social context is examined with its implications for defining problems in terms of mental or emotional concerns. Certain personal limitations on seeking help are discussed. The literature dealing with specific referral sources to mental health treatment are examined. The second section contains impressions gained from interviews with mental health professionals about the importance of the referral source on their evaluations of a client. They responded to questions about what people come to them, what information …

Regulation Of Electroconvulsive Therapy, Michigan Law Review
Michigan Law Review
Regulation of ECT has generally focused on whether the patient or his representative effectively consented to the treatment. The highly intrusive nature of ECT and the unique circumstances of those patients who are likely to receive it create particularly difficult legal issues concerning the validity of the patient's consent. This Note will examine the various methods that are available to protect the rights of patients for whom ECT is proposed. After briefly explaining the nature of the therapy, the Note will discuss the efficacy of judicial remedies with respect to both competent and incompetent patients. It will argue that, because …
Michigan's Revised Mental Health Code, William David Serwer
Michigan's Revised Mental Health Code, William David Serwer
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This note will evaluate the three chapters of the Michigan Code which present the most significant legislative attempts to safeguard the rights of the mentally ill. Chapter Four of the Code extends several traditional due process guarantees to the civil commitment process. By guaranteeing the right to adequate notice, the right to be present at the hearing, the right to be represented by counsel, and the right to notice of trial by jury, the Code offers better protection from unwarranted commitment. However, due to the difficulty of defining mental illness and accurately identifying those in need of treatment, the possibility …

On The Voluntary Admission Of Minors, Louis Lessem
On The Voluntary Admission Of Minors, Louis Lessem
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The past several years have been witness to dramatic changes in both the theory and practice of civil commitment. In the law, this development has taken the form of increased concern for the protection of the personal liberties of the mentally ill while among members of the medical profession it has been experienced as a part of the process of opening up the back wards. Legislatures in many states have responded by revising their mental health statutes to establish more rigorous standards for commitment, periodic review of the status of committed patients, and better procedural safeguards throughout the commitment process. …

An Epidemiological Study Of Mental Illness (Hospital Bahagia, Ulu Kinta, Perak) / Jaffar Othman, Othman Jaffar
Pre-2000 Student Works
One of the most disturbing social problems in the world today is mental illness, Though it is not so serious in developing and underdeveloped countries but in countries which are well advanced and highly developed this problems has turned out to be very serious indeed. In the United States alone, there are approximately 750,000 persons who are hospitalised in mental institutions (1957) and they occupy some 55% of all hospital beds. In Malaysia, today, this problem is not very serious yet. Though in the past we are not clearly aware about it, today the situation has changed. The Government had …

Police Initiated Emergency Psychiatric Detention In Michigan, Mark F. Mehlman
Police Initiated Emergency Psychiatric Detention In Michigan, Mark F. Mehlman
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
While performing his duties a police officer may frequently be confronted with the behavior of an individual which threatens or has resulted in self-inflicted injury, or which poses an imminent threat to the safety of others. Under such circumstances an officer may determine that criminal arrest is inappropriate but that some form of restraint is necessary. Michigan has provided an alternative course of action by authorizing temporary emergency psychiatric detention of an individual whom a police officer deems to be "mentally ill and manifesting homicidal or other dangerous tendencies."
