The Effects Of Problems Attributed To Culture On The Mental Health Of Athletes, Corey Rae Kuhn
The Effects Of Problems Attributed To Culture On The Mental Health Of Athletes, Corey Rae Kuhn
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Demographic changes in the United States during the past century and recognition of the importance of diversity have increased interest in research involving ethno-cultural factors that impact mental health. For example, important psychological constructs, such as self-concept and ethnic identity, have been indicated to develop within cultural context and impact psychological wellbeing (Brittian et al., 2013). The field of psychology, as a whole, is evaluating the merits of etic and emic approaches to research and clinical practice while exploring the importance and application of multicultural counseling/therapy (MCT; Sue & Sue, 2013). In contrast, within sport psychology, the influence of ethnic …
Effects Of Multivitamin-Mineral Supplementation On Mental Health Among Young Adults, Ya-Hsuan Chang
Effects Of Multivitamin-Mineral Supplementation On Mental Health Among Young Adults, Ya-Hsuan Chang
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The percentage of young adults who had mental illnesses has increased from 2008 to 2015. However, few existing studies investigating the potential benefits of multivitamin-mineral (MVM) supplementation on mental health focused on young adults (18-24 years of age), whose eating behaviors are often unhealthy. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a MVM supplement on mental health in young adults. One hundred and thirty-three college students (Mage=20.59, SD=1.77; 80.15% female) participated in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants consumed either a MVM supplement or a placebo for 30 days. The supplement contained B Vitamins, Vitamin C, …
Barriers Of African American Football Student-Athletes In Seeking Mental Health Services, Todd Andrew Wilkerson
Barriers Of African American Football Student-Athletes In Seeking Mental Health Services, Todd Andrew Wilkerson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nearly half (48%) of collegiate football student-athletes are African American (NCAA, 2018). African American student-athletes face adversity at their respective institutions in the forms of racism and unfair treatment (Hill, Hall & Appleton, 2010). African American male student-athletes face educational stressors, campus stressors and athletic stressors. These stressors consist of academics, family, athletics and social relationships (Miller & Hoffman, 2009). Many African American student-athletes do not seek mental health treatment due to their status on campus (Watson, 2006). However, few studies have examined mental health and barriers for African American male student-athletes when seeking mental health services. As such, the …

The Effects Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd) And Depressive Symptomology On National Guard Service Member Commitment, Courtney Isgett
Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference
Military deployments can impact the psychological functioning of service members, sometimes resulting in comorbid diagnoses of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, which could have ramifications for service members’ commitment to the military. Additionally, the multitude of unique experiences facing National Guard members, such as social isolation and transitions within civilian employment, can have significant impacts on mental health. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of PTSD and depressive symptomology on commitment to military service. We addressed this goal using data from 129 National Guard service members three months (Time 1) and eight-months (Time 2) following …

Black Women’S Wellbeing: The Intersections Of Race, Immigrant Status, And Mental Health Among African Diasporan Women In Houston, Texas, Sianneh Vesslee
African American and Africana Studies Summer Fellows
My central research question is: how has white supremacy impacted African Diaspora women’s mental health, access to mental healthcare, and identities as mental health patients in the United States as discernible in advertisements and state policies for psychological wellness? More specifically, I will investigate whether and/or how white supremacy shapes the ways in which advertising and state policies for mental healthcare address the particular needs of black women who immigrate to Houston, Texas from Lagos, Nigeria and Coahuila, Mexico. I choose those geographies because Houston is a U.S. city with one of the highest populations of black immigrants from Nigeria …

Audience Response Systems And Missingness Trends: Using Interactive Polling Systems To Gather Sensitive Health Information From Youth., Tammy Toscos, Michelle Drouin, Mindy Flanagan, Maria D. Carpenter, Connie Kerrigan, Colleen Carpenter, Cameron Mere Mba, Marcia Haaff
Health Services and Informatics Research
BACKGROUND: The widespread availability and cost-effectiveness of new-wave software-based audience response systems (ARSs) have expanded the possibilities of collecting health data from hard-to-reach populations, including youth. However, with all survey methods, biases in the data may exist because of participant nonresponse.
OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to (1) examine the extent to which an ARS could be used to gather health information from youths within a large-group school setting and (2) examine individual- and survey-level response biases stemming from this Web-based data collection method.
METHODS: We used an ARS to deliver a mental health survey to 3418 youths …
Penny Wise But Pound Foolish: How Permanent Supportive Housing Can Prevent A World Of Hurt, Lavena Staten, Sara Rankin
Penny Wise But Pound Foolish: How Permanent Supportive Housing Can Prevent A World Of Hurt, Lavena Staten, Sara Rankin
Homeless Rights Advocacy Project
People experiencing chronic homelessness are trapped in a cycle of homelessness and trauma. Traditional approaches to homelessness attempt to address people’s trauma first and use housing as a reward for complying with treatment; such approaches fail because people cannot improve physically or psychologically while they are actively experiencing the trauma of homelessness. Our current responses to chronic homelessness do not work, but cities often justify the status quo as the only fiscally responsible option. Instead, these approaches are among the most expensive and least effective.
Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) flips the traditional order in which homelessness and trauma are addressed …
Barriers To Mental Health Treatment In Patients Referred By Primary Care, Rebecca Palmer
Barriers To Mental Health Treatment In Patients Referred By Primary Care, Rebecca Palmer
Dissertations
Problem: Limited access to mental health treatment is one of many potential barriers to treating mental illness in the United States. Where resources are readily available, reportedly high no-show rates for established mental health appointments suggests further investigation is necessary to identify frequent barriers within that population. This was a quality improvement project to identify common themes in patient-reported barriers to care.
Methods: A 4-question phone survey was offered to individuals that did not appear at their mental health appointment. Data was analyzed to identify the most commonly reported barriers to mental health treatment. Additional data collected includes reported history …

A Comparison Of College Student-Athletes With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) And Nonathletes With Adhd: Academic Adjustment, Severity Of Mental Health Concerns, And Complexity Of Life Concerns, Sonja Lund
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
College student-athletes traditionally experience more stressors than their nonathletic peers due to their dual roles. ADHD causes impairments in executive functioning which can cause additional stress for the college student. The combination of ADHD and student-athlete status may impact academic adjustment, mental health severity, and complexity of college life concerns. Presently, no study has explored how student-athletes with ADHD may compare with nonathletes with ADHD in terms of these elements. The purpose of this study is to address this gap in literature and by analyzing archival data collected from university students across the United States. This study utilized an ex-post …

Co-Occurrence And Non-Overlap Among Behavioral And Health-Related Problems In Preschool Children, Chandni Patel
Theses and Dissertations
Integrating mental health and healthcare services increases the reach of healthcare while reducing costs and stigma associated with seeking mental health services. To provide such services for preschool aged children we must first understand how behaviors related to healthy lifestyle and mental/behavioral health overlap. This study examined the relationship between behavior problems, sleep duration, screen time, and eating patterns and assessed the frequency of co-occurring problems in these areas. Because of the importance of parenting across these domains, the association between parent disciplinary strategies and the co-occurrence of behaviors in the different problem areas was assessed. MANOVAs revealed that there …

Religion, Mental Health, And The Latter-Day Saints: A Review Of The Literature (1995-2017), Adrienne Rogers, Daniel K. Judd
Journal of Undergraduate Research
There are over 4,000 religions in the world today. One of the core functions of religion is to help individuals find meaning and purpose in life. Several researchers have found that this religious function impacts psychological well-being, often for the better. This relationship between religious belief, practice, affiliation, and mental health has been an ongoing conversation that has generated controversy and debate.
Our research focuses specifically on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and how this religion affects the mental health of its members. Several studies have shown positive outcomes regarding Latter-day Saint membership and mental health. Also, …

Unfortunately, childhood maltreatment and trauma are prevalent in society. As awareness grows, so does the research on the long-term effects early exposure to traumatic events has on the developing person. Socioeconomic hardships, psychopathologies, and cognitive deficiencies correlate with early childhood adverse experiences. This review will compare normal neurological activity and development to that of children who have experienced childhood trauma. It will also further explore various factors such as the level of trauma, the onset of exposure, duration or recurrence of trauma experienced. Finally, this review will examine the effects that manifest themselves in adulthood to further understand the detrimental …

Responses were then analyzed to find themes. Findings from this study found similarities as well as differences …
The Impact Of Sexual Assault Disclosure Reactions On Interpersonal Factors And Mental Health, Lindsey Chesus
The Impact Of Sexual Assault Disclosure Reactions On Interpersonal Factors And Mental Health, Lindsey Chesus
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Sexual victimization is experienced by about 20% of women and two percent of men (Black et al., 2011). Disclosure of these incidences is high, with about 90% of survivors speaking out at least once about their assault (Ullman & Peter-Hagene, 2014). Though disclosure rates appear high, common reactions given by formal (e.g. law enforcement) and informal (e.g. a friend) sources are negative and counterintuitive to survivor growth (Ullman & Brecklin, 2002). Often studied with military veterans and suicide, perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belonging are tied to social disconnect and perceived rejection from interpersonal support systems, and often follow stressful life …

Workplace Supports In The Infant Mental Health Field: A Mixed Methods Investigation, Tanika Eaves Simpson
Doctoral Dissertations
This mixed methods investigation explores work-related stress and employee well-being in infant mental health (IMH) practitioners and supervisors. The question of how reflective supervision can be integrated into infant-family serving systems to contain the emotional strains and secondary trauma of direct practice with vulnerable young children and families is gaining traction in the empirical literature (Barron & Paradis, 2010; O’Rourke, 2011; Osofsky, 2009; Shea, 2018; Watson, Gattis, & Neilssen, 2014). However, the relationship between organizational supports and self-care practices in managing work-related stress and promoting employee well-being has yet to be examined in the infant mental health literature.
