Perceived Stress And Coping Mechanisms Observed In Professional Master’S Athletic Training Students, Emily Madrak, Jennifer L. Volberding, Emily Madrak
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: With the shift in level of athletic training education, studies regarding undergraduate students, especially regarding stress and coping, are quickly becoming obsolete. Because of this shift, we sought to investigate level of perceived stress (PS) in professional master’s athletic training (PMAT) students, coping skills used to mitigate PS, and what coping skills form a relationship to alter PS. We observed these variables by gender, age, year in program, and curriculum delivery model. Method: We used a quantitative cross-sectional study online survey to recruit students who were currently enrolled in a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited …

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: Breast cancer is the leading cause of female cancer worldwide, which can lead to many negative sequelae, with up to a third of women developing breast cancer-related lymphedema. Breast cancer-related lymphedema requires chronic maintenance and is associated with worse physical and mental health outcomes compared to women without lymphedema. Occupational therapists are well-positioned to address the complex needs of women with breast cancer-related lymphedema. This review aimed to identify existing research that reports outcomes of lymphedema management programs addressing both physical and mental health needs of women with breast cancer-related lymphedema.
Method: A scoping review was conducted …

Given rising mental health concerns among Pacific Islander (PI) adolescents, this population remains underserved by available mental health resources. This interpretative phenomenological analysis with focus groups (IPA-FG) examined the lived experiences and perceptions of 19 male PI adolescents (ages 14–16) from Native Hawaiian, Maori, Samoan, and Tongan backgrounds regarding mental health help-seeking behaviors. Four overarching themes emerged: stigma and judgment, cultural misalignment in professional services, impact of disclosure and perceived punitive consequences, and a complex ecosystem of trusted relationships as mental health support. Notably, participants expressed belief that disclosing mental health challenges would “ruin their lives” and held misconceptions about …

This essay explores the critical issue of healthcare access for undocumented immigrants in the United States. Despite contributing significantly to the economy through labor and taxes, undocumented immigrants face systemic barriers to medical care, including lack of insurance, fear of deportation, and economic troubles. These barriers result in untreated illnesses, mental health struggles, and increased use of emergency services, which generate higher long-term costs. The paper argues for inclusive healthcare policies, such as Medicaid expansion and protections for patient privacy, to improve public health, reduce disparities, and enhance economic stability. Drawing from U.S. and international examples, the essay demonstrates that …

Personality And How It Relates To Coping Flexibility, Rebecca Kearns
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Stressful events, negative emotions, and negative events are all a normal part of life. How we react and cope with these events can reduce the damage stress can have on our mental health and well-being. There are many ways to cope with situations, but not all are considered to be beneficial. The ability to alternate between different coping strategies within a given situation is called coping flexibility. Having high coping flexibility is considered to be healthy and adaptive, but not everyone possesses the ability to flexibly cope with situations. Personality may explain individual differences among coping flexibility. The big five …

Good Trips, Bad Trips: Attachment, Connectedness, And Mental Health In Psychedelic Experiences, Sean Michael Nickley
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
Research into psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies and the overall psychedelic experience is in a period of acceleration, with hopes from multiple disciplines that such research might uncover novel and effective treatments for myriad psychological disorders. Much research to date has examined the neurobiological underpinnings of psychedelic states. The current study, existing as part of a larger trend examining the phenomenological and psychological mechanisms of psychedelic experience, sought to examine the ways in which attachment dynamics influenced the type of psychedelic experience—mystical versus challenging—and the subsequent effects on social connectedness and psychiatric symptoms. Prior research had suggested that individuals with more anxious attachment …

CGU Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines the quality of life among Arab-American breast cancer survivors, with a particular emphasis on dietary practices, physical activity, and mental health. Despite increasing survivorship rates in this population, there remains a significant gap in the literature addressing their unique post-treatment experiences and needs. Employing a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, this study integrates quantitative survey data and qualitative narrative interviews to assess adherence to health behavior guidelines and to identify culturally specific barriers and facilitators to well-being. Quantitative findings indicated suboptimal adherence to recommended dietary and physical activity guidelines and highlighted prevalent psychological distress among participants. Thematic analysis …

Local governments increasingly rely on unarmed, nonpolice experts to provide public safety services. In response to demands to reduce police violence, many municipalities have empowered paramedics, mental health counselors, social workers, and homeless outreach personnel, to triage health and safety issues without police involvement. Pilot programs reallocating police funds to these alternate responders appear to reduce arrest rates and rates of police violence. But they have not eliminated acts of violence committed by these nonpolice actors themselves. Shocking stories of paramedics chemically sedating motionless patients to death, social workers assaulting clients, and homelessness response units brutally dispersing unhoused persons after …

“I Learned To Bottle Up My Feelings From A Young Age”: A Narrative Analysis Of Latina Young People’S Family Mental Health Socialization, Jenn M. Lilly
Social Service Faculty Publications
Latina young people report high levels of mental health problems and low levels of helpseeking
compared with their white peers, but little research has examined factors influencing
their mental health views. Inductive analysis of 25 participants’ narratives revealed that Latina
young people described three stages in the development of their mental health-related beliefs,
attitudes, and behaviors: undergoing a process of family mental health socialization, suffering
in silence, and attaining a new perspective. Within each of these phases, participants shared
stories that attest to their agency and resilience. This research uncovers a novel theoretical
construct, “family mental health socialization,” which elucidates …

Multiple, convergent risk factors place Latina youth at disproportionate risk for mental
and sexual health issues. Yet, their firsthand perspectives and experiential knowledge of
how to navigate mental and sexual health challenges is rarely the subject of scholarly
inquiry. This article presents a multi-modal content analysis of themes and messages
conveyed by two digital zines created by Latina young adults for Latina teens through an
arts-based research project. In this arts-based research, zines functioned as both data and
method, capturing Latina youth’s nuanced perspectives and lived experiences of mental
and sexual health. We identified six themes in their works—acknowledging and …

Research on psychedelic medicines is experiencing a revival. Some clinicians, scientists, and ethicists believe that psychedelics are so different from other treatments that they warrant special consideration in how they are researched, regulated, commercialized, and administered. Others argue that psychedelic medicines show clinical potential, but they should be treated like other medical interventions. In other words, identical standards should apply. This article analyzes whether psychedelic medicines warrant special consideration from a regulatory and ethical perspective.

Schizophrenia: Breaking The Myths, Peighton Hunt
A with Honors Projects
Throughout the years, schizophrenia has been commonly misunderstood and misrepresented within the media. Film, television, news outlets, and even social media frequently fail to do research before involving mental health, both intentionally and unintentionally creating turmoil for innocent people. Most of the depictions created are completely false and fail to properly reflect the reality of the disorder. Mental health is a hot topic, especially with young adults and college students. However, to this day schizophrenia still continues to be one of the most misunderstood and stigmatized mental disorders. By being educated on the reality of schizophrenia, we can help eliminate …
The Mediating Effect Of Injury On The Relationship Between Running Mileage And Depressive Symptoms In Division 2 Cross Country Athletes, Jaxon Leduc
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Training for a cross-country season requires athletes to accumulate a high volume of training miles at different intensities. Over a period of months and years, consistent high training volumes have been shown to contribute to overuse injuries in cross country athletes. Injuries have been shown to negatively impact athlete’s mental health; this is especially true in student athletes. The purpose of this research is to explore the mediating effect of injuries on the relationship between training volume and mental health in collegiate cross-country runners. Participants in this study were 40 members of NCAA Division 2 Cross Country teams with eligibility …
