Racial Discrimination, Social Support, And Perceived Qualification Differences: Analyzing The Impacts On Work-Related Stress And The Mental Health Of Black Women, Nyasha Chikwinya, Cayla Johnson
2025 Honors College Research Symposium
Through this study, this research looks at how racial discrimination at work that is perceived, has impacts on the mental health of Black women. We tend to focus on major issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression. The main ideas we will be exploring include: 1. Facing racial discrimination at work is stressful. Black women who deal with this can experience more psychological stress, 2. Having access to a support system or mentorship at work can help lessen the bad effects of work-related stress on Black women's health, and 3. When Black women see themselves as inferior to their white …

Racial Discrimination, Social Support, And Perceived Qualification Differences: Analyzing The Impacts On Work-Related Stress And The Mental Health Of Black Women, Cayla Johnson, Nyasha Chikwinya
2025 Honors College Research Symposium
Prior research indicates that racial discrimination greatly affects the mental well-being of Black women in their jobs (Berdahl and Moore, 2006). This matter is vital since the compounded impacts of racial discrimination can intensify job-related stress and lead to persistent mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression (Holder et al, 2015). We propose a study examining how racial discrimination at work is perceived and how it impacts mental health of Black women. Specifically, we hypothesize: H1. Black women who deal with racial discrimination can experience more psychological stress. H2. Having access to a support system or mentorship at work …
Let's Grow: Investigating The Relationship Between Houseplants And Mental Health In College Students, Makia G. Adler
Let's Grow: Investigating The Relationship Between Houseplants And Mental Health In College Students, Makia G. Adler
Honors Thesis
This literature review explores the potential mental health benefits of houseplants for college students, a population increasingly affected by anxiety and depression. With traditional mental health services strained and often inaccessible, simple and low-cost alternatives are urgently needed. This review examines whether the presence and interaction with houseplants can improve psychological well-being, specifically symptoms of anxiety and depression. Drawing from ten peer-reviewed studies, this review finds a generally positive association between houseplants and mental health, though results vary. Notably, the duration of exposure appears to have little effect, while setting and autonomy in plant interaction are more influential. Interactions in …

Development Of A Mental Health Screening Protocol And Educational Materials For Cares Therapy Clinic, Darlene C. Horn
Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium
In the United States, 26% of individuals report living with mental illness each year. Those with a disability are 5 times more likely to report symptoms of mental distress. Additionally, underinsured individuals are at increased risk of going undiagnosed and untreated.
A student-run free clinic that provides occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy, and speech therapy services to underinsured individuals implemented a new initiative to screen patients using the Patient-Health-Questionnaire (PHQ) assessment due to the higher risk of undiagnosed mental illness. However, with no dedicated mental health providers on staff, there was a need to develop a standard protocol for students …

An Analysis Of Burnout In Owner-Operated Businesses, Leslie Madison
An Analysis Of Burnout In Owner-Operated Businesses, Leslie Madison
M.S. in Leadership
This project explores what professional burnout is in the context of owner-operated businesses. The topic was selected based on my own experiences of burnout in my business. After just a few years of working without boundaries, I began to feel the lingering symptoms of stress. Pushing through the stress of running a creative business on my own eventually led to a state of debilitating burnout that caused me to stop all operations and allow my business to run on auto-pilot. Results of this study show a potential beginning of modern-day professional exhaustion which dates to the 17th century when …

Dissertations (1934 -)
Nonprofit leaders are at the helm of organizations that contribute significantly and meaningfully to society. Nonprofit organizations provide a range of services across sectors that include healthcare, education, mental health, civic engagement, and many others. Existing literature attends to the challenges nonprofit leaders face in their work roles, with managing boards and fundraising frequently cited as stressors. Little is known about the mental health experiences of nonprofit leaders, including common mental health diagnoses they experience, prevalence of mental health symptoms, or effective interventions for mental health concerns. The present study sought to explore the experiences of nonprofit leaders who attend …

Community Viability And Attitudes Toward Mental Illness: Rural Insights For Community-Based Care, Carrie N. Baker, Sarah A. Bush
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Access to mental healthcare varies greatly in rural, suburban, and urban communities. The community viability indicator (CVI) and the community attitudes to mental illness (CAMI) scale are tools for understanding a community’s health and viability and their receptiveness toward people with mental illness. This study of US adults (n = 1,028) in rural, urban, and suburban communities aimed to describe the relationship between community viability and community attitudes toward mental illness and determine the effect of community type on CAMI scores. Results revealed positive associations between community attitudes toward mental illness and community viability for rural and suburban community members. …

An Analysis Of The Mental Health Of Private School Teachers, Caitlin R. Frederick
Leadership Education Capstones
This capstone study investigates the mental health of private school teachers, focusing on how access to professional development resources and support systems influences their well-being. Grounded in Maslach and Jackson’s Burnout Theory, the research explores emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and diminished personal accomplishment as critical components of teacher burnout. A mixed-methods approach was used, incorporating pre- and post-surveys alongside a mental health presentation delivered to staff at a small Christian school in Minnesota. Of the 45 invited participants, 26 reported implementing new strategies—such as gratitude practices and emotional regulation—into their personal and professional lives. Findings reveal that while professional development can …
How Does Adult Foster Care Affect Mental Health Outcomes In California?, Christopher A. Stanley
How Does Adult Foster Care Affect Mental Health Outcomes In California?, Christopher A. Stanley
Master of Public Administration Capstone Papers
Mental health in adult foster care is an important threat to the overall mental health of the citizens of California. Mental health has challenged professionals and recipients of adult foster care. Although mental health and adult foster care have had some connections (i.e., people with mental health issues typically live in adult foster care), the mental health effects of living in an adult foster care have been overlooked. In particular, mental health has been separated from general medical issues and has been overlooked as a necessary part of a person's overall health. This capstone paper will draw upon the literature …
Integrating Mental Health And Substance Use Treatment Using The Integrated Care Model: Policy Analysis, Victoria Reis
Integrating Mental Health And Substance Use Treatment Using The Integrated Care Model: Policy Analysis, Victoria Reis
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract
Purpose of Statement
Policy analysis evaluates the integration of mental health services into substance use treatment, particularly for co-occurring disorders. It identifies gaps in existing policies and offers recommendations to enhance access, coordination, and effectiveness of integrated care.
Background
Integrating mental health services is crucial due to the high prevalence of co-occurring disorders. However, the fragmented treatment landscape leads to poor patient outcomes and rising healthcare costs. Policies such as the 21st Century Cures Act and Texas House Bill 4 provide a framework for improvement, but significant gaps hinder effective integrated care.
Methodology
Using the Bardach Policy Analysis Framework, this …
Cultural Self-Harm Differences, Erin Simmons
Cultural Self-Harm Differences, Erin Simmons
Psychology Student Papers and Posters
This study is based on the evident cultural differences in self-harm behaviors and what those behaviors look like specifically for individuals that identify as Black or African American. Previous literature suggests that cultural differences in self-harm exist but very little research centers Black experiences and their connection to self-harm. Self-harm is considered a broad term, and it encompasses a variety of behaviors, some more common than others, but these common behaviors are typically exclusively explored within only a few demographics with a low Black participant pool. This contributes to the assumed lack of self-harm among the Black community but through …

Introduction: Despite global efforts to reduce adolescent birth rates, the problem persists in low- and middleincome countries. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rates (97.9 births per 1000 women). In Kenya, more than 15 % of adolescent girls become pregnant. Forty-three percent of these develop depression. This study investigated adolescent pregnancy in rural Kenya to understand the challenges and context-specific factors that can help adolescents maintain good mental health during pregnancy and the motherhood.
Methods: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted in Kilifi County between October and November 2021. A total of 73 participants consented to participate in the …

Abstract There is limited intersectionality-informed, contextually diverse qualitative research on school experiences of LGBTQ+ students and links to mental health. Focusing on racialized, ethnic minority and religious/faith groups, this coproduced UK study examines how: 1) sexual and/or gender diverse students with intersecting minoritized identities experience school; 2) school environments could better support their mental health; and 3) what shapes school inclusion initiatives. In-depth interviews and focus groups were conducted with 22 staff members, 32 students (13–19 years), and nine LGBTQ+ school inclusion training providers. The sample was diverse across gender and sexual identity, race/ethnicity, religion and context. Data were analysed …

Impacts On College-Aged Asian American Mental Health, Zahra Soherwardy
Senior Theses
This study explores the relationship between different forms of racial harassment and mental health issues in Asian American college students. Asian American mental health is a growing concern in the field of public health. Asian Americans have the lowest treatment rates and some of the highest stigma levels of any demographic. They are also impacted by the model minority myth and discrimination, further alienating them from getting help. The topics of subtle racism, blatant racism, and current racial discrimination were compared to depressive symptoms, anxiety, self-esteem, and four domains of aggression using survey data. Subtle racism was found to be …

Exploring University Student Mental Health And Wellbeing Through A Low-Barrier Peer-Led Service: Emerging Insights From The Living Room, Amanda L. Cole, Fiona Navin, Dawn Reid
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Universities are increasingly recognising the importance of addressing the social and emotional wellbeing of their students. Mental health challenges experienced while at university can hinder academic achievement and exacerbate existing mental ill-health. In response to this identified need, many institutions have implemented mental health services, such as psychological and counselling support. However, barriers such as stigma, accessibility, and effectiveness often limit their reach and impact. Many students do not avail themselves to services, or access the supports available, due to these barriers. This study gathered initial data from 110 participants who visited Edith Cowan University’s “The Living Room” (TLR) within …

Program Development For Occupational Therapy Services Within A Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, Charles H. Hanks
Capstone Projects
The goal for this capstone project was to advocate for occupational therapy services to be provided within a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC). The concentration areas of my capstone project were occupational therapy program development and advocacy. CCBHCs provides a variety of medical, mental health, and substance use/abuse services to persons, groups, and populations living in the community. Currently, only qualified mental health professionals (QMHP) can provide skilled services to individuals significantly impacted by their challenges. This limits the number of trained professionals that can effectively treat and provide services to individuals in this setting. Occupational Therapists (OT) are …

By the year 2050, it is projected that the population of individuals aged 60 years and older will increase by 47 percent, reaching a total of 82 million in the United States. Many older adults experience depressive symptoms, and some never recover from it. Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders among older adults. Approximately 3.2% of community-dwelling older adults experience major depressive disorder in a 12-month period, although many more experience clinically significant depressive symptoms, with a recent estimate of 35% based on a global meta-analysis. In addition to physical functioning and depressive symptoms, another domain in …
Does Crisis Intervention Training Reduce Negative Encounters With The Mental Health Population, Jayden Smith
Does Crisis Intervention Training Reduce Negative Encounters With The Mental Health Population, Jayden Smith
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Law enforcement officers frequently interact with individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. These encounters can lead to negative outcomes including escalation, use of force, or unnecessary incarceration. Crisis intervention training (CIT) aims to equip officers with the necessary skills to recognize and respond to people with mental health conditions. This research examines the effectiveness of CIT in reducing negative encounters between law enforcement and the mental health population in communities. Analyzing data on arrest rates, use of force incidents, and officer and community perception will show whether CIT leads to safer interactions. However, critics say that CIT is ineffective due …
